Australian state border restrictions

Looks like I'll have to cancel my trip to the top end for a second time in two years. Even if Vic's are allowed up there in 3 weeks time there is still a risk I could be thrown into isolation if there were new covid cases in Vic within a week or two of me arriving. As it stands this is very likely, seems we have a week off and then two weeks back in lockdown at the moment.

Looks like I will try for mid next year. I feel very sorry for the tourism operators up there, this all must be very tough to survive.

I feel your pain. My booking is for 10 days from now.

I totally get that the uncertainty of not knowing whether a trip can happen is awful and to me the not knowing is actually worse than having to cancel. But if it makes you feel better, although NT had imposed retrospective quarantine in the past, for their most recent travel updates they don't seem to have made the restrictions retrospective. For example until recently regional NSW people could go to NT, but when NT closed that down they didn't put the regional NSW people who had recently arrived into quarantine. It's a gamble though.

Agreed. Personal experience of this.
I arrived in DRW from regional NSW and the border closed to us the next day. We didn’t even receive a single text from NT after arrival.

So sorry you’ve had to cancel your trip, i have family touring the NT at the moment and they say places are very busy so hopefully not all bad for operators

The NT has now closed to entry from all Hot Spots unless approved traveller.
Many people were using quarantine in Howard Springs to transit into WA from the the Eastern seaboard.

Well they can hardly use the same room for international arrivals on repatriation flights and domestic travellers at the same time. The cut in arrivals caps would partially be to blame for this one would think as more of Howard Springs is needed for international repatriation flights.

Especially for Olympic athletes...

I already booked NT for next year, end of June. As soon as flights were released.
Shirley we'll be fine by then, lockdown, hotspot etc etc wise.
Was there last Feb, extremely humid but loved it, heavy rain. Want to experience it over our shocking cool winter.

Very ordinary times direct flights from Mel.
Only VA had daytime flights, weekend only. QF all red eye, no good with young ones.

Things may - no doubt will - change over the coming months.
Currently, there is a 9.30am direct flight, arriving 13.30pm.

Hi everyone. I’m just trying to make my way home to Rockhampton after a trip to Darwin. I have had 4 flight changes since I’ve been away and now have found myself having a 23 hour transit via Melbourne. So I booked into the Ibis airport motel which is within walking distance. My next flight is to Brisbane tomorrow afternoon. Silly me had thought that getting a border pass back into QLD would be as quick and easy as it was to get the ones into NT. and VIC. I hadn’t realised it could take up to 3 days o_O Also I found the form confusing in some parts. One of the options is this:

I arrived or will arrive in a COVID-19 hotspot by air for the sole purpose of transiting through the airport and I will not leave the confines of the airport

I know I’m not literally in the airport but I’m wondering if staying in this motel counts? I tried the COVID help number and waited over an hour but was still on hold so gave up for now.

Also for anyone else who applied for the QLD border pass - how long did you wait? Was it really (up to) 3 days? I have yet another overnight transit once I finally get to Brisbane due to these flight changes. When I booked this trip a few months ago prior to all these lockdowns all my flights were just one after the other - with a little bit of lounge time in between 😏 Darwin was lovely BTW. My first time there. Not too hot and a nice place to be during the festival too 😊

If you're in the Ibis now @oz_ally then I think you might be stuck with quarantine on returning to Qld: you're in Melbourne now and technically in lockdown. You are no longer in the airport or 'in transit' the way most states seem to define it.

Does Qld allow you to enter as a resident (from a hotspot)? And can you quarantine at home in Rocky?

When I last did a Qld pass a couple of weeks ago I got the email back in minutes. Definitely not 3 days. But I was traveling from what was a green zone at the time, so in your situation it may well take longer.

Damnit. I was worried that would be the case. 😖 ive been all over Google tonight and read conflicting things even on the QLD government site. It’s been doing my head in. I know I’m allowed back in as a QLDer and had read that could mean I could quarantine at home. But I also saw the update from 1am yesterday.

Yeah I just noticed there are 2 different ones depending whether someone has been in a hotspot or not. If I hadn’t had to transit via Melbourne I could have just gotten the border pass which comes through straight away. But now I have to get the entry permit. 😖

Yeah, sorry to pass on/confirm bad news.......Qld has a 'confines of the airport' rule. Once you have left the confines of the airport you are considered in the red zone.
