Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Getting away from the 'trick cities' for a moment...

Rookie question here - has anyone had any success seeing availability in J to the USA? I have tried dates well into the future and the only thing I can see are nonstop flights on UA in Y (ugh), and NZ via AKL also in Y. It doesn't seem to show anything via Asia on the *A airlines that have good availability like TG or BR.

EDIT: I mean availability at the normal rate - i.e. 135,000 points plus taxes return. Not using any miscategorised destinations or anything like that...

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

@Programme: trans-pac non-stop nth america to australia / nz has terrible award availability with the major alliances. Virgin Australia have the best availability for J rewards. If you are lucky enough to see lifemiles availability non-stop on your desired dates, bag it quickly, it doesn't last long. If you haven't already, consider trying all relevant Australian eastern seaboard ports, as well as alternatives to LAX (SFO, YVR). As lifemiles booking engine can be tricky to navigate, you might have more luck doing your searches through one of the other star programs, and then plugging the dates in to LM. However, LM engine can sometimes see availability that other programs can't, and vice-versa. I ended up accepting that if I wanted to travel J with my LM points I would have to go via Nth Asia (SYD-ICN-LAX on Asiana, booked pre-SFO mishap, not yet flown). Happy hunting.

Thanks for the reply, quokka77. Been reading this thread, but it's a lot to get through!

I gathered that finding nonstop trans-Pacific in J is mission impossible. I guess my question would be more along the lines of is there a some way to have the booking engine look for availability via circuitous routes like SYD-ICN-SFO on Asiana or BNE-TPE-IAD on EVA Air. It's not showing anything at the moment but it looks like perhaps I'm not looking hard enough.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

If you are getting too annoyed with it, maybe just book it as two separate itineraries: Aus-Asia and Asia-America (not sure what the points difference would be, but if it's going to save you major annoyances and time searching for rewards, could be worth it).

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

I find it very alarming that so many people what to scam the system and the rest of the mob be happy with it. Quiet funny actually because in the past when I have done it its like I'm pure evil .

The advice I was given is LM is a gem of a program and should only be used correctly without gaming the system . Yet today I didn't read one post anyone against these tricked hidden cities . I wonder why .

i have no doubt you would like us all to treat Lifemiles as a gem. it's probably the only cheap miles option you have left in star alliance and you don't want to see the loopholes closed down :)

I think the difference in attitude today comes down to the execution.

you adopt a slash and burn approach. four seats that went empty BRU-ABJ on your last trip. four seats that went empty from NRT-GUM. not one seat, but four.

booking seven(?) corner harbour view suite rooms in sydney under the IHG best rate guarantee (for those who aren't familiar with the program it gives the entire night free if you can find a lower price elsewhere).

those are actions guaranteed to draw attention.

but... loopholes get closed anyway. can't usually attribute that closure to any one individual. so let's move on from that to the next issue.

one of the benefits of bulletin boards such as AFF and Flyer Talk has been to share any tricks so as many members as possible can take advantage of them before they get withdrawn. 'don't call the airline!' or 'don't call the hotel!' are common pleas whenever a mistake is identified.

but in the last couple of years a new breed of bulletin board member has arrived. those that want to take everything they can, but don't want to share in return. or if they do share it has to be via PM and they want something back. thankfully those people are quite rare, but you can see it kind of goes against part of the community spirit? personally, I saved one of your trips by finding last minute award seats from bangkok to Paris via Cairo when you couldn't fly Thai.

you were stressed at the time. I found a solution. and happily so. happy to help out a fellow AFFer.

but come one year later, I asked you for some lifemiles tips and tricks and you refused! you said you didn't think I was a suitable person to have that information!

so now perhaps you can now see the difference in today's discussion?

when you (shanye) take advantage of any loophole you appear to do so for your gain, and your gain only. with this new spreadsheet, everyone who wants to take part presumably can! it seems several people are working on it and it's a community effort.

each of us on AFF have different skills. while one person may be saving your holiday, or advising which credit card to get, another might be working on lifemiles.

and at the end of the day... so what if we get a loophole closed? everyone will have had the chance to share in that.

not just one person.

so while I hear your request to treat lifemiles as a gem, i don't believe that request was aimed at the interests of us all. rather I see it as an attempt to give some members more time to slash and burn for their personal gain only.

why? because the award charts are printed. that's what we should expect to pay. everything is already there in black and white. the only 'gems' you are asking us to preserve are the loopholes... some of which you know and have refused to share. why should we preserve those loopholes for one or two people only?

so anyway... from my point of view, that's the answer to your question :)

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

I don't have access to this spreadsheet but the last few posts inspired me to find these interesting cities. I don't have computer programming skills either so I've just spent the last three hours plugging in cities in the lifemiles booking engine. Thankfully it was not in vain and I now have a list of 13 airports coded as Oceania that shouldn't be.

My script found 15 airports in one country that are coded as Oceania. Script still running, checking the rest of the world's airports :D

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

I gave a few airport codes today did I ask for anything in return ? What about those people getting the free QF points are they sharing the information . Too add they are harbour view club suites and its well into the double figures not 7 .

I also wasn't aware so many people wanted to go from brussells to abj in business class and I'm sorry I booked four empty seats. If it makes you feel any better TG didn't want to let me go either.

I think if I can have a $130,000 holiday for less than $10,000 I'm doing something right ;)

P.S didn't I tell you how to get free O/W emerald status ,etc , etc ?

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

One possible complication is if the transit country does some sort of advance passenger information screening. E.g. if the country you're dropping out at does not expect you to clear immigration there. Dropping out at international-to-domestic connection points should not be a problem though.
Any indication which countries/cities may do this?

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Although Im very grateful for the new spreadsheet additions and there are some interesting options in there, the vast majority seem to be Y only, or such a complex routing that the LM search engine cannot find any flights at all. As much as it would be great to be able to go to Asia for a Oceania points price, is anyone here actually interested if its Y only? This only become really lucrative if its in J...

I once again express my frustration as to why you can't do mixed fare bookings with LMs and just pay the higher fare rate for the entire thing, as just about every other FF program allows you to do. Surely this would generate more income for LMs and there would be more people redeeming points for mixed fares that would cost LMs less to 'buy' from other airlines?? Qantas allow you to book J redemptions with some legs in Y (with the infamous (!) next to the flight number), I assume because it allows them to sell a Y seat for a J price?

It would also be fantastic if you were allowed a stopover for, say, an extra 10,000 miles. Again, doesn't cost LMs anymore money, yet they can charge more points.

Allow mixed class awards so you can J flights to places that are incorrectly coded? This will NOT save lifemiles money and is probably asking a bit much. If you want a good value J fare just book one through the usual method.

one way to the USA in Y for about $300 is nothing to be sneezed at... even if it is on UA

I've found even F availability on UA MEL-LAX but you have to look for ages and ages. I think the sweet spot was not quite 11 months out but something like 9-10 months out. This was about a month ago. Looked last night and found absolutely nothing in F or J.

SYD-ICN-LAX I can find a bit of. Just search the normal way should come up in either Smart Search or under Asiana. Look around April next year (and possibly beyond ?).

I'm sure there are people interested though not many here seem to be. Personally I might wear a short leg or two in Y to get a great fare (might, not really sure if that would get past my gatekeeper). However I'd rather these were recorded, in some cases the fact that only Y is recorded is because only Y has been found to date and some dogged searching might find J, not that J is definitely unavailable.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Not sure what to do since I can't send PMs due to my low post count (I know, I'm new, it's understandable) but I'm looking for access to that spreadsheet mentioned earlier if anyone involved is reading? :) already done a USDM booking for next year but if my next one can be even more interesting I'd be thrilled.
