Bankwest Transaction account [General Discussion]

Personally not really sure why some are getting so upset, frankly I always expected this to be shut down and what I'm mainly surprised about is that it took BW so long. There's no reason in my view to think BankWest "have to" keep these accounts open for us, we've had a good run and its unfortunately coming to an end.
Not that I wouldn't be happier if they kept the accounts open but I can say for sure if this was my business I'd have closed these accounts ages ago and as such I can't.don't really begrudge BankWest doing so. As for the "how" of them doing so, well frankly is there a good way to take away something people have become used to. Based on the actions, I'd say clearly not.

:( This is literally the 2nd night I make 50 * 1c transactions to Telstra... I really hope I did not jump on at the very end of the rollercoaster! Any accounts of people not receiving this letter?

My family had 8 cards on 4 accounts (standard + platinum) until about 6 weeks ago when they blocked all cards.
They made us close 4 cards ....... so 1 card for each account. And unblocked all of the standard cards.
Now they are all being closed.

Hi Craig - if they made you close 1 card per account, do you know why they're now closing the remaining card on each account?

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the accounts getting closed down are ones with multiple cards on the same account. Any exceptions to this?

I think he already stated that now, even after only having 1 card per account "Now they are all being closed"... this is why I'm worried

My partner & I both received the letter today (2 cards each). Both accounts are used as full transaction accounts, not just for payments.

What annoys me is:

  • Letter dated 11/08, postmarked 15/08 & received 17/08. Account to be closed 25/08. Couldn't they have posted it on 20/08?
  • No access to the "Rewards Program" after August 11. A retrospective change, because it means no points for transactions or balance from July 29!
  • They may have just said the reason for closing the account was because. Their reason (activity), doesn't tell us what we were doing that was actually wrong
  • If it was card use, they could have put a hold on any cards, without stopping points and given us more than a week to rearrange all our banking that involves these accounts
  • We can contact the bank if we're unhappy with the bank's decision. Will we be fobbed off or might they listen & even reconsider their decision?
  • In small grey print at the very bottom of the page, the letters informs us of our right to contact the FOS, "if I remain dissatisfied with Bankwest's response". Do we really have to wait for their response or can we go straight to the FOS? Because we will be fighting it.

I honestly don't know if it's for lots of micro payments or paying the water bill with 222 $1 payments. The reason I suspect the water bill, is because the letter is dated 3 days after those payments & the last time I paid that bill, I had a hold put on one of my cards.

Has anyone else who's received a letter, paid someone other than Telstra, shortly before getting the letter?

In regards to no access to reward points after Aug 11th..... I will need to look at my letter in detail!

I wonder if they have a right to stop the points before the date(s): you recieve the letter, the account is actually closed.

Edit: reference in regards to NAB issue a few years ago.

Just looked over my letter: to be closed on Aug 25th. No longer have access to rewards program after this date (25th).

Sailing the home straight till Aug 24th. I suggest others to download all online ststements issued from July 31st (showing points transfer), till the final closing statement.

As it may be needed if things go sour in the Sept 5th points transfer.

Credit to all of you who have milked the teat thus far!
I'm only sorry I didn't make the effort months ago when I first saw this and thought "it can't last"
Apparently it did, until just now
As the Jedi Master (Cove) says - "It's a game - move on" :)

Currently overseas so no way of knowing if I've received this letter. I guess I'll find out on the 25th when I go to make the daily payments. It will be a shame if it ends now when I'm so close to the million points earn!

bankwest

Hi all
Anyone else received a letter from bankwest stating they are closing QFF account down regarding the activity on the account ? If so can I do anything to keep the account going ?

No letter as of yesterday, this will now make collecting the mail very suspenseful...

I only have a single card in my name and a single card in my wife's name so will report in if we get notification!

Do you mind me asking how many cards per account were you using, which merchant were you making payments to, and how small were the payments? maybe we can find a blind-spot that is currently undetectable by BW?

I don't have a letter yet...

Im still at work so won't know if I got one till later today, maybe even tomorrow as is normally the case up here.
although I'm only running four seperate accounts, same address, with only one card each, being this far away from a branch I was never able to get the second card

I'm upset by the fact, that no attempt was made to communicate to us that what we were doing was wrong, thus giving us a chance to retain our accounts, while stopping the problematic behaviour. Also, the extremely short time available for changing any banking arrangements affected by this decision, or challenging it. And the loss of half a month's worth of points that I've already earned.

I'm pretty sure that when they cancel access to the "Rewards Program", any points accrued after July 28th will not be credited by BW or transferred to the QFF account. I think someone else has previously posted about their experience with this, but I don't have time to find that post.

Even if the date is 25/08, the points will only be credited and transferred on 01/09, meaning it won't happen, no matter how many points you have earned. I think someone else had this experience when BW closed their account.

But perhaps it's worth continuing to pay, until we know whether I'm right or wrong.

Bupa gave me a call today and asked me to stop making 5c payments. Disappointing, but fair enough.

Yes. It's a pity BW couldn't have done the same, with the threat of closing the account, if the problematic behaviour continued.

Mrs lilkid has also received her in the mail, citing clause 23.1. I haven't received mine yet; so hasn't the parents yet. Counting the days now.

Could it be due to small balance in account? As I only keep a $2k balance and it's on her account. Ours are all less than $100.

I rang BW today and the lady only said that due to the conduct on the account along the lines of the transactions being made. If I wanted to challenge/request a review of their decision, I would have to send an email to customer relations, the email was provided on the letter as well.

I will be challenging it if the case was that no points are earnt between Aug 1st - 24th. It does say in writing that no points would be earnt from the 25th.

What already has been earnt (bills paid) should be credited, as per the conditions of use. the closing conditions say: As of the date of closure = no more points.

I think you will find a points accrued in an account being 'closed' are lost. This has been the case for all types of cards as long as I remember. In rare cases I have closed any CC account, I've been advised to move the points out before the account is closed, as the points will be lost otherwise. I cannot see how BW would be any different. It's just a pity we cannot proactively moved the points before BW account is closed on the 25th.
