Cathay to cut worldwide capacity by 30% [Now 96%]

Agree. Still, can't imagine many non-resident takers willing to do 7 days quarantine for, say, solely a few days of meetings. It's just not economical. But who knows?
People always revert to business travel and tourism, but the other significant share of travellers is VFR (Visiting Friends & Relatives). I’d say that the VFR market is probably the target here, as they are probably more likely to accept the 7 day quarantine thank tourists or business travellers.

i think the only people that may accept it are those that planned to stay for a while like a month or 2 in hkg...

Todays email - don't know where they find their optimisim.

Dear Oatek

Good news - as of 1st May Hong Kong is reopened to overseas visitors! Non-Hong Kong residents who have stayed at places outside China in the past 14 days prior to arrival are now eligible to visit. The mandatory hotel quarantine period on arrival has also been reduced to 7 days for fully vaccinated travellers.

We are optimistic this is only the begining, and have added more flights departing from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and look forward to welcoming more travellers to visit our home soon. Book and fly with confidence with our Fly Worry Free promise; if your plans change, so can your tickets.

They got to say it but tbh I dont think so... slight off topic... why on earth will USA will trust CX, when the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission - USA) just preparing to delist many Chinese companies from US share markets - including China Eastern and China Southern airlines. I suspect more distrust between China and the western world between now and July 1, that is when the new HK government takes office with John Lee - he is also sanctioned by USA under HK human rights and democracy act, HK autonomy act for his abuse and terror to hkers in 2019 protests.

SEC.gov | Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act (“HFCAA”) - source for delisting.

Sorry for off topic, but relevant to CX as USA and western world will NO longer trust CX anymore!

You know CX is still owned by the actual Swire family?
I understand what you are saying, but I don’t think USA will care anymore to be honest based on what I see from SEC today, trip.com (sorry for off topic) is also sanctioned… you may say how it’s relevant, that is now a Chinese company by ctrip, and in its portfolio is a well known travel agency existed before 1997, wing on travel and that could be seriously impacted as well!!! If they can sanction companies that have ownership of hk companies, why won’t USA sanction CX?

Yes CX is owned by Swire group with 45%, but almost 30% is owned by Air China - even Swire group admitted Air China is majority shareholder

“Cathay Pacific Airways is Hong Kong's home carrier and a leading international airline, operating one of the most modern fleets in the skies and with an outstanding reputation for the quality of its products and services. Swire Pacific is Cathay Pacific's principal shareholder, with a 45% shareholding, while the other major shareholder is Air China (29.99%). The strategic partnership between Cathay Pacific and Air China has helped to form one of the airline industry's strongest groupings.

Cathay Pacific is committed to strengthening Hong Kong's position as a global aviation hub and gateway to the Chinese Mainland.”

So my flights HKG- FCO on August 27 were just cancelled.
Interestingly - no word on the SYD-HKG leg.
I was looking at taking the chance on CX in August to xHKG - MNL for a meeting, but it looks like CX are still too uncertain. If I am only left with the disaster that is QF I will probably not bother going.

The issue is they are only publishing flight availability 6-9 weeks out. This is the published availability HKG-MNL for June. Columns are Mon-Sun

Looks like they're having a big clean out today.

Email from Cathay today:
"Dear Dr coriander
"Your flight CX315 to Madrid has been cancelled. We’re very sorry for this unexpected change.
"Due to the ongoing impact of global travel and operational restrictions, we have had to make a number of changes to our schedule. These changes have unfortunately seen the cancellation of your flight. We're very sorry, as we know how disruptive this is to your plans. "

Followed by email from Qantas:
"We've had to make some changes to you flight.

"Due to ongoing border restrictions we have delayed the recommencement of services between Australia and China. As a result we've had to cancel your flight CX315 to Madrid on 06Sep2022 and there are no other Qantas services at this time. "

Back in February, in the immortal words of Indiana Jones "I have a bad feeling about this", I booked MEL-SIN-FRA-DBV in J on Singapore Airlines. I left the CX booking in place, intending to cancel it closer to the flight date - CX have done that for me.

"Australia and China"? Sounds like pressure from above.

I would not read too much into it. Qantas doesn't fly to China, so they just simply recycled the same e-mail template. I know I would.

Booked CX138 SYD > HKG on 08 June last night. Only 3 other people in business. So empty.
