Chip or pin on american express cards?

Amex gave me a few dates (which I have subsequently forgotten) for my old cards to become chipped.

Apparently they are doing them in lots, and association cards (depending on the association, I guess) are behind the normal cards. The reserve was scheduled to be before the edge, but I didn't have a charge card at the time, so did not ask.

Supplementary Amex issued Platinum Credit Card arrived a week or two ago, WITH a chip

Need to ring for a PIN

My chip card has come as well. I can't wait to get home to use it since I'm currently interstate. What has the world come to when the thing I'm looking forward to most is returning home to a chip+PIN card? haha

Just a word of warning for those that have got re-issued Chip + Pin credit cards, make sure that the magnetic strip does still work in Australia before heading overseas, its amazing how many terminals dont have chip reading ability yet - even in fairly advanced places like Japan.....

I just spent 4 weeks in the US, and not one place had a Chip reading machine. In fact, there were numerous occasions where people asked what it was - including a friend who works for Bank of America!

Poor old America.

Received plat edge - no chip... Clearly they are still sitting on some stock!

Asked yesterday about the Velocity Platinum card, apparently they're rolling out starting 27th February. For anyone with a Corporate Green card, those are changing to chipped cards in June sometime.

Similar experience here, except two weeks in Europe and two in the US. In Europe I had to keep explaining that my Amex was a signature card - because they were expecting a chip card. No such problems in the US. I also have a chip Mastercard, and in a couple of places in the US I inserted it into the chip reader, only to have the sales assistant immediately remove it and swipe the mag strip instead!

Just to mix things even mode, with my 28 Degrees card in Australia, chip+pin works great but over here in Europe chip works, but still forces me to sign and doesn't allow the entry of the pin:!:

I had the exact opposite happen to me in FRA in December, was at the chemist at the airport, they didn't accept Amex, so pulled out a MasterCard with a chip, but in my well travelled state couldn't remember the pin as I seldom use, said to the chemist I couldn't remember the pin could they just swipe it, he said no and inserted into the reader anyway, I subsequently entered the incorrect pin and he refused to swipe and let me sign....pretty ridiculous as I had my passport on me if he wanted to be extra vigilant and check my identity, it was like a $30 transaction too, I told him to forget, bought my melatonin in SIN for half the price and used my Amex!

1. The reissued cards certainly work in all ways in Australia - both magnetic stripe and chip. You'll find that many terminals in Australia have not had their software upgraded yet and will not work with the Amex chip and therefore require using the mag stripe anyway (but you can use your pin I believe)

2. I didn't experience most of the problems mentioned through Europe last year. I did have to sign sometimes because the Chip + Pin on my MC wouldn't work... particularly in the UK. Through the Euro zone I used an International Currency Card from Amex which worked perfectly with the chip every time.

3. For those interested in when the Amex Plat Charge will be reissued with a chip, I was recently advised that these will be available from the last week in Feb this year. I was invited to be put on a list of interested card holders so that a new card is automatically issued in Feb when they are available.

If you're curious then just call up and have a conversation with them.

4. The contactless technology that came in my Platinum Reserve card that I had reissued, does not appear to work anywhere I've visited yet. Most of the normal contactless terminals don't seem to like taking these cards yet - can't wait until they do!!

BMW Gold Supp card arrived with chip!

BMW? The car? Didn't know they had one. How about Mercedes? :p

What's up with so many acronyms on here?! Annoying to us newbies. Is there an index or glossary somewhere?

I understand why jargon is used but sometimes people just create ones that aren't so common and it's just so...*whispers* elitist!

Never mind, carry on. Oh Bank(Mid)West?!

When you say "I was invited" do you mean they contacted you to offer it or did you need to call them and ask for it?

Also did they tell you if the new card will have a new number or keep the same one?

No, it's actually BMW the car. The elitists actually have a hidden thread where they plot against the pleb members.

Um yes BMW the car... As another pointed out.

But thanks for the rant, pretty funny.

I called to ask and was advised of the dates and the list being made of interested cardholders.

My earlier post in this thread confirms that where these cards are reissued in this fashion they will have new card numbers etc
