Chip or pin on american express cards?

Ehh .. enforced password changes typically lead to a percentage of people writing them down.

Back on topic - kinda annoying that AmEx won't allow PIN changes - maybe they'll allow it in the future..?
 
Yeah i think the current solution is a quick fix. Theyll get there eventually.

Btw getting my pin burnt was simple. Seems like many eftpos devices can write to the card. I can bow use pin easily.

Increasingly tempted to call for a chip and pin card. Only three or four dd if that so no major traumas...

Ooh just had a thought I have a supplementary card that is rarely used (for my mum when visits us) which has no dd...

Hmm. Good luck but i would assume that a supp cant be chipped unless the primary is chipped. Good thing to test though.

Can I ask where you got your pin burnt? I received a new Amex card with a chip last week and have been unable to use it so far. There was even one eftpos terminal that refused to accept the card at all, because when I swiped it it said 'Insert Card' but when I inserted the card it said "Chip Not Valid"!

My memory is a bit vague, but I don't recall "burning" a pin to my C&P card. I think I did it when validating the card by phone. I guess that the pin isn't actually on the card.
 
Apparently not - I queried this with Amex and received this reply. I'm not sure what constitutes a 'chip-compliant' terminal though, considering the terminals I've used the card at certainly supported chip and pin for Mastercard and Visa:

the reason you have had to sign for the first two transactions is because once a PIN has been chosen, the Chip Card then needs to be used at a Chip compliant terminal for the PIN to be programmed to the Chip. It seems that the terminal which you used was not Chip compliant and therefore your PIN was not programmed to the Chip...The PIN will be automatically written to the Chip during a transaction and as it doesn’t increase the transaction time, neither you nor the merchant will notice any difference during this transaction.

Sounds like a textbook response rather than them answering your question. They probably thought that you swiped your card (instead of inserting) and requested for PIN payment.

Nope, sounds like the right answer to me... The card does need the pin (well a cryptographic version of it) "burnt" to the chip, and not all terminals in Australia can do it.
 
After having my Gold credit card changed a couple of months ago to a chip, I took the plunge and requested my Plat Reserve credit card also get changed.

It's just so much simpler to use pin rather than signature, and when I travel in Asia, Europe and similar countries I won't get the strange looks I'm now used to!

BTW, I saw the first terminal with an Amex Paywave symbol. It was on a Coke machine and had the Visa and MC symbols as well. It wasn't functioning so I couldn't test to see if it would work.
 
Pin burnt to my new card easily. Think it was a Coles terminal that did it.

Strangely enough f1rst duty free can't accept the chip and you must swipe and sign. Presume it doesn't recognise the back details on the chip.

My current Centurion Titanium cards are due to expire at the end of the month.
I just received the new ones and I'm disappointed to see there were NO chips.
I have to wait another 5 years now before the next renewal comes around again.
I wonder whether Amex is just behind the times or whether they haven't worked out a way to stick the chip onto the titanium card yet?

Strange they haven't updated the Cent cards, sounds like they've done the rest. My new Platinum charge card (ooh shiny) arrived a few days ago and had both chip & pin and contactless payments built in.

My new Platinum charge card arrived a few days ago and has not got a chip :!:

Weird IMHO.
