I wouldn't be jumping to that conclusion.

Given this is essentially a private service, it will be up to BAM1748 to advise us when and where the train will be departing.

I think he has said where it should be departing from earlier in this thread.

Almost 20 years of being employed on the railways in this city tells me the train won't be leaving from the airport. It is very very very very rare that tour trains would be allowed on the airport line.

I've spoken to the father in law and we are both really keen to join. If numbers allow. Basically that means we're gold to platinum. I have leave approved and I'm in syd on the 13th so will just change my flight.

Now to train spotter questions from the father in law - is a steam loco likely? (That was his first question) I assume since you're not using the airport line it might be an option. Actually the loco was about his only question. Edit: whoops he also asked about cost. I assumed that meant towards the train not our travel costs.

I'll probably arrange a car to drive back to syd on Sunday.

Initial talk was airport line. This was modified to a suburban stop TBA.

Central would actually be a good base as it allows multiple options.

The plan this early is a bit fluid. Originally I thought we'd run around the Bankstown line and onto the East Hills line allowing direct connections with airport line trains. (To avoid Central) But the Bankstown line is shut that Saturday for trackwork.

the plan as it currently stands is.
Depart Central 10.20am
Pick Up at Wolli Creek on the airport line.
Run via the coast line to Moss Vale then back onto the main south to Goulburn.
This route might change but the departure time should remain unchanged.

Because of potential fire bans and cost, we won't be running steam, it will be diesel hauled.

As to costs, I'll ask for donations that I can pass on to a needy group for disadvantaged families coming up to Christmas.

I'll post updates to the times as they come to hand.

If anyone hasn't done the trip via Wollongong & then across to Moss Vale, it's a good scenic trip. I was hoping we'd be going this way!

Great news that the plan at this stage is that we will be going via the Coast to Moss Vale . Its such a scenic part of NSW . The interstaters are in for a treat.

re: Christmas Drinks & Train Crawl Sydney to Canberra [Sat. 14 December]

We are thinking of making an all rail weekend of it. If the October timetable changes allow, we intend to return back up to Fassifern, leaving Canberra at around midday Sunday on an Xplorer (showing as CLK634 at present) and change to an Intercity at Strathfield. Will probably stay at CP in Canberra.

I have heard (not 100% confirmed) that from October's timetable change, all south CLK services will only be going via East Hills so there will be no stop at Strathfield.

I'm on VA 815 arriving SYD T2 8:55am, returning via SYD, likely from CBR at 01:05pm (cracking my ATR Virginity).

Will be staying at the CP (For 'Win Big', that's 1/3 brands, 1/4 stays & 1/2 'city' stays;)).

Thinking about it, we would have probably gone on into Central anyway. Sunday arvo Newcastle Intercity services can get quite crowded by Strathfield and the cost will be the same for us.

Any other CBR based AFF'ers planning on doing the trip and want to start at the QF J lounge on the Saturday morning?

I'll be booking similar flights soon, albeit on a different carrier, just waiting for a Mastercard to turn up ;)
