re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

I may have found a change to ASA's

I have been looking at a few international flights using an ASA in J as I missed the chance to book F seats (although I am going to ring QF to request an F seat)

I was certain that before if there was a classic award available, you would then find that you could book a cheap ASA as well!

However now I have found that there seems to be J classic awards available but then no cheap ASAs

Anyone else seen this ?

Onilne, there have long been some glitches in the redemption of ASAs - particularly on mixed class fares. For example, a classic award in PE can be booked in "X" class and "Z" where there is no PE class on the domestic connection. Contrast this with an ASA where you can still get a cheap ZASA (omg, is that even a term?) as long as there is "Z" class on the domestic service. On a Brisbane to DFW for instance, to go via Sydney, you have to book QF8 BNE-SYD and then QF7 SYD-DFW. If you try and get a ZASA with any other domestic connection online, the price is based on a standard commercial fare.

The glitches do work the other way too though on some services - like when you can book a JASA but end up getting "P" class where no "U" is available. So it's swings and roundabouts.

Remember, you can always call QF to book something showing as a classic that's not showing as an ASA. Any QF operated service for which a classic seat is available can be booked as an ASA.

Thanks :) Will give that a go right now

Are you saying any QF operated service for which a classic seat is available can be booked as an ASA for the same number of points as the classic seat ?

i thought the issue here was the 'type' of classic award available? that is, it needed to be a classic award available to ordinary bronze members for it to also be available as a cheap ASA? it you get additional inventory because you are gold or platinum then it doesn't necessarily translate into a cheap ASA?

No - just that if the inventory is available, it can be booked as an ASA. The minimum number of points required is the same as for a classic though - but that applies to ASAs generally.

Although I have had success getting inventory released and then booking as an ASA - that was only once - and I've not been able to do it since. I actually think there may have been a system change that prevents this.

To summarise, if a classic award is available to a for a route then it is generally likely to be available for an ASA at that points cost, plus a chash component. The cash component can vary but is generally somewhat more than the +++ for a classic. (There are a few exceptions.)

QFF Points and SC's can be earned with these bookings.

More in this specific thread: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....uent-flyer-program/how-do-i-book-j-29610.html

The initial premis reported by the OP of this thread was that this was going to change, but it had not happened as described.

re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

All ASA can be had for the same points cost as the classic award with a variable cash component. If there are classic awards available the cash component is generally low, as other have mentioned.

re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

Well I spoke to one person and they said they couldn't book the ASA at the same level as the Classic award that I could see online...

Will try again later I guess

But as I said, this was the first time I had seen a classic award available but not an ASA at the same price

re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

Sometimes I've had classic award available but not ASAs. This occurred due to being a WP. Same classic award didn't show on a friend's account. In these cases EF didn't show U/X availability.

Can someone look at one-way awards Business class LAX-SYD or indeed LAX-CNS for my interest and to confirm my conclusion. There are regularly standard classic awards available at the 355 day mark but now never ASAs for less than stratospheric points on the same dates. ASAs at classic award level plus cash for one way travel on this route are virtually non-existent I believe.

There's more on that in the dedicated thread I linked to earlier today (post #527).

There are still ASA's around in J/F on the MEL or SYD-LAX and return

I've had classic award but no ASA availability on MEL/AKL before, which I thought was odd.

Yes, but not one-way originating in LAX. That is what fits my usual travel pattern - mainly around the world travel. I'm now looking at alternatives such as US-Asia-OZ with an AA award for the USA-Asia part. That gets expensive and at some point you wonder why bother.

Well there was last night and this morning *sort of* and now they are back again...

This morning I noticed that when looking at the "weekly view" there would be a few days here and there that would show say 200,000 points for an F redemption but when you clicked on the actual day there was nothing at the discount level, maybe they were in the process of being booked by someone else ?

All that being said there still ARE one-ways from LAX to MEL,

EG Monday 28th April in F for 202,359 points and Tue 28th April, which can be reduced to 144k

Keep in mind April is school holidays

The cheapest FASA I can find for MEL-LHR is 531,942 (384,000 plus $1,688.15 (AUD)) whereas a classic is 384,000.
MEL-LAX the cheapest FASA is around 2 million. A JASA for around 311,289.

How do they work the points for the ASA then ??

There should also be a cash component with the classic award.

Has there been another price rise after the outage overnight, I have not seen TSV DRW at almost 46000 points before, it was 30000 for two years ago by comparison, so QF inflation is running at 25% PA??
