Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

Why would ATA be too good to be true and marginal ASA's not? ATA was part of the program for quite a few years. ASAs' ... are only a recent innovation (when first launched they did not even earn SCs/FF points). They are effectively away for "marginal" high tiers customers to get across the line (without having to head to the US to do cheap status runs in First on AA), and could also considered to be "too good to be true" (especially considering some of the routings previously available A to B via C &D) . I suspect the original concept of making them earn SC's and points was to provide an incentive for CC churnersto direct sweep into QF instead of banking miles in credit card rewards programs to move to the likes of SQ, MH & CX later.

Surely not ??? Would they ?? Can't beleive it ?? Oh by the way I still beleive in Santa too.

I think you have hit the nail on the head !!!!!!

Apparently the site has optimised for tablets and smart phones so the emo gen Y hipsters easily surf the QF site.

Do only emo gen y hipsters use technology? What an outrageous comment.

And yet it's a bugger to use on a tablet. The keyboard pops up and covers the drop down list, but if you minimise the keyboard the list goes away too!

The old site was perfectly easy to use on a tablet (well no harder than on a PC)
There was the app if you wanted the clunky big numbers experience.

typical QF Enhancement half coughd and not properly tested. What makes us believe they could provide a good enhanced website when they cany even get PB right lol

I agree with you. By not displaying the Business Class fares on the same page as the economy fares it is not only inconvenient - it can be misleading ... It is clumsy and time consuming.

I agree. Pain in the back side. Please QF bring it all back on 1 single page and reduce the font size so I don't need to scroll so much.

I suspected as much but don't have access to our tablet to confirm otherwise to provide relevant comment or experience. Until then I can't start the appropriate thread (Tablet experience QF website) perhaps another AFF member could?

um - nearly 61 and now access the net mainly via my iPad and iPhone. Being pretty much retired I settle down in the afternoons in the sun with my dogs on my lap, a book to hand (still prefer the real thing) and IPad. We have a wifi network, so I use my iPad to access the net while cuddled up with the dogs and plan holidays and watch the stock market...

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

I've been having a bit more of a poke around and I've noticed something that may or may not be new.

There does not appear to be any way to see Classic Awards for F?

Selecting "show classic awards only" for SYD-HKG shows Y and J.
If I unselect "show classic awards" I can select "First" in the drop down and see F seats (why, oh why can't I see Y, Y+, J and F on the same screen???)

So how am I supposed to know if there is a FASA available at classic rates? Has it always been a limitation of classic awards that they aren't available in F? (I have no idea, I've never booked a classic award).

QF are doing a really good job of annoying their customers ...

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

Works for me. Maybe there are no F awards available on the days you are looking?

Weird, I would have expected an F column with "no seats available", but I don't get an F column at all ...

What date did you search so I can see if I can get the same results?

SYD-HKG on 4 Dec 13.

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

SYD-HKG on 4 Dec 13.

Thanks Mark, I see the F seats. So it appears that if there's no availability for a class the entire row just disappears. What a joke, especially considering they have removed the old functionality where you could see a fortnight or so of dates and point costs/availability at a time ...

Now wouldn't it be great if there were an option to choose a booking class and "flexible dates" along with "classic awards" so that we can see which dates have classic award availability in a certain class ... but that would just make things far too easy for the customer!

or they could just give back our mASA online search capability ...

edit: aaggghhh I figured out that if you pick "flexible dates" and "classic only" there is a toolbar at the top that lets you filter which classes you want to search on ... only 2 problems:

1. the colours are very hard to differentiate between the classes, which wouldn't be a massive issue except that
2. when you deselect everything except F and hit search ... it comes back with all options ticked and in the results.

Seriously, was there any testing done on this website before it was released on the public?

cheap ASAs still come with a cash premium over classic awards.

that cash premium is no different to a jetstar bundle. qantas isn't giving the points and SCs away for free.

you pay an extra $200 for a return ASA to Hong Kong for example and that's already half a years qantas club membership (the primary perk of being gold).

so I'm not entirely convinced there is any money being lost.... except against 'normal' ASAs where qf might be able to take 1 million points off someone (although even that argument doesn't work because the cheap ASA was a classic seat that was available anyway).

This is so true. It must be more to do with full business cabins and wanting to burn peoples points with upgrades, that they are shelving ASA's.

If they are worried about people getting higher status, they wouldn't be offering DCS's

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

One of my pet annoyances with the new system:

I try booking a SIN-HND Classic Award with flexible dates for (say) August 31. The calendar shows availability in Business and First (in near-indistinguishable colours). I select the date, get the red square around it, hit "Continue", and the page simply reloads without advancing.

Happens for me in either Safari or Chrome.

Why would ATA be too good to be true and marginal ASA's not? ATA was part of the program for quite a few years. I suspect the original concept of making them earn SC's and points was to provide an incentive for CC churnersto direct sweep into QF instead of banking miles in credit card rewards programs to move to the likes of SQ, MH & CX later.

Because ATA seems to me like a very bad business decision as it is open to abuse. Hey, I would just move my office to the QC in Perth. I would get all my suppliers to meet me there. I would check them in. Drinks on QF..."Want some food"..."help yourself".

People keep saying that ASA's are being abused, but they are not losing money on them. The money QF get for the points from Businesses is huge compared to what they get you in terms of a flight. Using ASA's is no different to using classic, except they cost you a bit more so you get the points and SC's, it's all factored in. If they were losing on them, they would have said 50% points earn on ASA's. They are clearly not worried about the number of people achieving Elite status, based on the continual drive of DSC offers. DSC offers work, why would they get rid of them.

Also QFF points sit as a provision on the Balance sheet of QFF. They want that provision reduced at all costs no different to your boss telling you to take annual leave if you accrue too much.

I honestly believe that some upstart Marketing guru has come up with this idea of dropping ASA's or making them more expensive thinking that dumb people will just burn their points on expensive ASA's or Classic redemption will be flooded, so frequent flyers will have to burn their points on expensive junk that they don't need from the QFFS. Bottom line is, people will burn more points, making QFF more profitable, but QF will be less profitable, because punters will just give up on the status dream and just take the cheapest fare no matter what airline it is, hence undermining the whole principle of why people use Frequent flyer loyalty programs.

And then you will get the Frequent flyers that are elite just through day to day flying and never use ASA's because the are P1 or WP and burn their points on F Classic international flights. These guys are happy, because there will be less elites and F or J Classic awards will be easy to come by.

I'm a Y wagon battler and the best I can hope for is Gold with my business and personal flying. JASA lets me get to WP and I bloody deserve it, because I spend many hours in the bowels of A330's and 737's and I'm proud to admit it.

For my next trick I attempt SIN-TPE on August 31. Calendar shows availability in Economy, Business, and First. Click through, and I only get two Jetstar Asia options (in economy, obviously).

See what CX prices out as, it might be a good little SC run.
