[Conjecture]Qantas to move European base to Berlin (BER)?

I heard that Qantas will be announcing Amman as a new destination. QF51 will operate BNE-SIN-AMM with a 747 four days a week. The other days QF51 will operate BNE-SIN with SIN-AMM to be on a connection Royal Jordanian codeshare. This means BOM is to be dropped as a QF destination (I'm speculating it might be picked up by JQ). The idea is that passengers from SYD and MEL will use QF31 and QF9 to SIN where they will join QF51. Passengers from BNE for LHR will use QF51 to SIN and then change to QF31 or QF9 for LHR.

Obviously feeding into AMM is great for connections on Royal Jordanian. One assumes there would be a number of QF codeshares. It will be good to see QF exploit the OW alliance to expand its network a bit.

Not saying this is what will be announced on August 24. Just saying that this is what I heard.

if it is true, about time they moved to tie up with RJ. maybe there could be some light... Perhaps India destinations will get picked up by Kingfisher from SIN?

Anything that avoids the UK punitive exit taxes is a good idea.

Amman is a good base to fly into for people visiting Middle Eastern (as opposed to Gulf) countries. It's a relatively friendly and efficient country and you can very easily get to Lebanon, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel/Palestinian Territories, Syria etc from there.

The international airport is named after the deceased Queen Alia which I always thought was odd considering she died in a helicopter crash.

That would be interesting, but would also need RJ to step up and start flying to SIN as well. Currently the only SE Asia service they do is KUL-BKK-AMM.

I really would be happy for this to happen. It would be great flying to Berlin straight from Australia. Much like others on this list I agree it makes surprising sense.
Berlin Tegel is going to close very soon, and the new Brandenburg airport looks to play the part (hopefully).

Air Berlin is a great airline and would be fantastic in the OW culture. Fingers crossed.

Versus JFK which is named after, well....JFK who was shot in the head and IAH which is named after President Bush Snr who......shouldve been shot in the head??

What happened to the BKK-HGK-BKK sector??

Still there, and granted as far as oneworld is concerned HKG is considered as part of SE Asia! But I was thinking of the more general geographic definition which puts China (including the SAR's) into North Asia.

WTF ??!! Makes no sense

oh boy....
A previous poster thought that AMM being named after a deceased Queen was odd because she died in a helicopter accident and I just questioned why that was more odd than an airport being named after a deceased president who was shot in the head and another airport named after a living ex president who should have been.......

but never mind... it seems that, like concorde, this one flew WAAAAY over your head.:)

Yes I did know this but I forgot to mention it in my first post. RJ only flys to AMM-BKK. The BKK-SIN part is a codeshare on Thai.

One would assume that if what I heard is correct, RJ will start flying AMM-SIN direct.

Considering JQ are discussing with BOM about getting access its more than speculation, although JQ are looking at BOM as a transit to Europe.
