[Conjecture]Qantas to move European base to Berlin (BER)?

oh boy....
A previous poster thought that AMM being named after a deceased Queen was odd because she died in a helicopter accident and I just questioned why that was more odd than an airport being named after a deceased president who was shot in the head and another airport named after a living ex president who should have been.......

but never mind... it seems that, like concorde, this one flew WAAAAY over your head.:)

FWIW Sydney airport was also named after someone who died in a plane crash.

Flying to AMM would be An interesting strategy. Do Australians need a visa to enter Jordan? If they need one then it might make transits and what not just a bit more difficult.

Also wonder if QF will downgauge this sector to a 333 rather than 744. The use of the latter will be expensive if they can't fill it in earnest, even if the BNE/SIN sector could fill that demand by itself.

Perhaps we could see a new market for QF from South Mediterranean / Middle East to Australia?

Personally whilst some of us very much do not like JQ, the fact alone that the QF network is expanding is slightly exciting in itself.

Ironically, someone actually said that the market between India and the Middle East is huge (what with Indians going to seek work in cashed up oil rich countries). However, I don't think QF has a chance on this kind of sector due to the unmatchable quantity of seats and low running costs of the incumbent carriers on this route, notably the Indian airlines and EK.

This would be like a dream come true for me- direct flights to Berlin on Qantas! And yes, with Air Berlin joining OneWorld, it would actually make lots of sense. Plus there are not many carriers flying directly into Berlin, Qantas would probably have a pretty easy fight there compared to Frankfurt. Bring it on! :p

A tasteless and totally offensive comment. Suggesting that particular persons whom you don't like should be shot in the head is beneath contempt and totally unacceptable.

It was a joke..... and how anyone unrelated to him personally could find that offensive escapes me.
If you're offended by such a statement, so be it. I cant and wont be held responsible for your lack of humour. Try and lighten up a little.....

The sort of joke that will get you thrown in gaol in the USA.

Well, no info in todays announcements in regards to the new Berlin-Brandenburg Airport and potential routes. *sigh*.....;)

I think that hoping there is going to be an announcement on 24th about BER is unlikely. Think AJ has bigger issues ATM, after the announcement yesterday

Interestingly, there has been a court decision just recently to allow the Berlin airport flight times up to midnight and from 5am onwards which has always been cited as a key decision criteria for airlines to move there. Again dreaming of that red kangaroo flying direct from my home city to my previous home city

Hi All , just revisiting this thread . Has anyone heard anything further on the possibility of QF moving from FRA to BER , especially with Air Berlin about to join OW next month and Brandenburg expecting to open mid year . Would we expect an announcement possibly tomorrow ? or are any new routes for QF international totally a dream ?

I'm hearing rumours all the time but nothing reliable. Still having my hopes up as it doesn't make sense whatsoever for Qantas to keep flying into Frankfurt and hence mostly feeding LH's domestic and inner-European short haul network if a OneWorld alliance partner (regardless of all the financial trouble they are currently in) offers all those connections from a different city which a.) is the capital of Europe's stongest economy, b.) will soon have a great brand new airport with a specific part of the terminal reserved for OneWorld and c.) is conveniently located about an hour flying time closer to Australia/Asia and hence cutting fuel and flying time. Not to mention d.) is a cool, exciting city instead of a dull place that no one else but bank and insurance employees seem to love :p

Latest in the German media is lots of interest from OneWorld alliance partners but no firm commitments (same as for Qantas goes for CX as well for example). I could imagine they will be waiting until the new airport is finally open- it got delayed so many times over the past decade that I also only believe it when I see it!

I really enjoyed Berlin (there before the wall came down as a teenager) but I would think that if QF don't fly into FRA they will lose a lot of pax specifically flying to FRA.

Of course e) Berlin isn't very central to the high speed train network, like FRA.

Would one expect a promotional 'Sale' airfare if this new route was released?

The high speed rail wins me for FRA. Once there Europe is your oyster ! ;)

But can see the sense of the Berlin / OW connection
