[Conjecture]Qantas to move European base to Berlin (BER)?

Bye Bye Frankfurt , Hello Berlin . It so makes sense with AB being a OW Partner. Its just a matter of via which city ? Is the a/c capacity available prior to receiving the 787-9 ? Will this be with the Orange Cancer or QFi ?

I noticed the comment by AJ in this article:

Qantas tips first Boeing 787 routes: Beijing, Hong Kong, India - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

"We're continuing to talk to Emirates about opportunities in continental Europe, and Berlin is one of them" Joyce said. "As this partnership is bedded down we'll be looking at opportunities for both airlines to expand their networks."

I think the reference to Berlin has been misinterpreted. EK don't operate to BER at the moment because of restrictions imposed by the Germans to protect LH and I think that's the opportunity AJ is referring to. Once EK can access Berlin QF will codeshare. I don't see QF doing it, unless EK are able to sell seats on it.

Why would the Germans want to protect LHR? Protecting FRA and MUC is more like it... And as I understand it, Qantas would fly the route and EK would code share, precisely because this would not require Emirates lobbying further with the German government.

I can small a wet lease...

Preferably a QF equipment service though, QF could make some very good coin on this route with DXB based crew.

Unless the quoted post has been edited isn't LH Lufthansa and not London Heathrow?

I know we might be in shock with these suggestion as it brings back QFi to PER but QFi could run an A330 from PER to DXB then onto BER , with an EK codeshare . It would be a similar senerio as they do for LAX>JFK albeit JFK is served by a 747-4 , but you get where im coming from . Outcome QFi has there own metal going into Europe & hub for there OW partner AB & EK can codeshare into BER. This is assuming there is no restrictions from the German Government with EK codeshares to BER.

Naah. It's PER you're talking and there's little likelihood QF would do that.

And that's an awfully long flight to be on an A330. Only sloppy beds in J, and no Y+. Might as well just stick to the codeshare on EK to DXB.

Any movement on this front is Berlin to become Qantas's European base?

I'm not sure they'd want to inflict the luggage issues that AB has on their premium passengers for any connecting flights out.

Besides, I thought DXB was the future base and then one stop connection to anywhere else?

Congrats on 100 posts and becoming a "member".

How does one celebrate 100 posts Wow these are dizzying heights.
By the way thank you I never realised.

Not sure about it becoming the European "base" but I would like to think they would fly there in the future nonetheless :)

Waiting for the new Berlin airport to open which probably won't happen until 2015 even though 2014 is scheduled.

Waiting for the new Berlin ........... 2015 even though 2014 is scheduled.

What was the actual issue with the airport?

What was the actual issue with the airport?
Fire safety was the official reason to delay the opening but it's all a big political disaster really. When you depart from the old East Berlin SFX airport (used mostly for easyJet and other budget carriers), you can see the huge modern terminal of the new airport in the distance- no planes, hardly any people, it's just standing there. pretty insane sight!
