Coronavirus (COVID-19) Panic Buying?

Indeed, I get the impression Aussies are too busy emptying supermarket shelves to go on holiday!
cheers skip

Not at the supermarkets I frequent. And at Costco, when don't shoppers here have full trollies?

I think it is more that hand sanitiser has a run on.

One thing I find surprising is that more people don't buy the double or triple rolls. I'd have nowhere to store those giant bales from Costco.
The upside of this is we might see a "surge" in newspapers. I could never truly understand the saying that "today's headlines are tomorrow's fish wrappers". Growing up in the country ours were torn into strips and hung on a nail in the toilet, which was of course outside down the path.

And really!! some papers contain so much s@#$, what difference is it going to make.
Hey I've just had a win. We have just moved house and in this quaint little 'hood we get a white pages (ok just a little local one but hey, if needs must....I have rescued it from the recycle bin and may yet relive my childhood

Just in the Thai office talking to my colleagues here about this post. They have always found our word usage a bit weird, but when i told them we have names for toilet paper i had them stitches; bog roll, ballot paper, star trekkers, etc, but when i had to describe the Collingwood scarf picture from above i lost the office.......

Was in Costco Canberra this afternoon (Optimum grain free dog food on special this week for anyone in the market...) and overheard a Costco staffer responding to a question on toilet paper availability. Said they went through 27 pallets of toilet paper between 10am when doors opened and sold out just after midday.

Weapons grade idiocy on display in Australia this week.

I can understand what has caused this - a small percentage of the population who are cautious get a couple of extra rolls - this immediately causes the sight of some empty shelves due to this tiny spike in the demand (as the usual logistics of dunny paper are very simple and extremely stable)

A few disgruntled shoppers who miss out ONCE, and then let social media run the whole thing into a panic. So suddenly everyone wants to but an extra roll or two - just in case the shelves go bare again tomorrow - this just sets off a chain-reaction resulting in exactly what we have seen.

The thing that alarms me is that this is how aussies are behaving even before the virus starts to actually impact us - imagine what it could be like in a few weeks or months when the pandemic is actually here? I think the government needs to urgently stand up and make a concerted effort to dissuade such knee-jerk stuff....

Nothing like price gouging to improve your bottom line. This was taken at a pharmac_ in a city near Lyon this week.

The price gouging has been happening at some chemists in Australia too. Before Covid became the "thing", I purchased my regular 1L of Hand sanitiser for $11.99 at a major chemist chain. When they ran out after the Covid rush, I had a look at a different chemist. The same item was selling for $25.00

We're the talk of the world.even in thailand.

Though they have their own panic buying. No problems with Toilet Paper, but the Instant Noodles are in short supply ;)

This is true but link is pay walled. Semi trailer caught fire on Brisbane motorway. Its contents.........toilet paper. Most supermarkets in Brisbane are already sold out.

At least Australia made the headlines overseas......while major intitiatives are being undertaken all around the world, we got this mention in the BBC (and the bolding is not mine!)

No - I totally get the ammo thing. Ammo will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more useful than toilet paperif things really went south! In fact, I was thinking the other day, the only issue I will have if everything turns to coughe is that I have no way of protecting myself if mob mentality really becomes a thing.....
