Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

the tip of the iceberg

Shudder…. settling the pigeons makes sense for public order… unless you happen to be a pigeon ...😡

I (respectfully) ask all the medico's reading and /or contributing to this thread : Have you received and briefings that you are unable to share ?
Have the briefings you have received changed your personal arrangements ?
All the info we have received is in the public domain / news....my main concern is that it appears quite contagious and fit young healthy people can die from it although this seems the exception. Imho, those that still want to travel to China (see the other thread) now are a lot braver than me. I have only one life....

And a government that won’t rescue you if you go against a Do Not Travel and an Insurance policy that will not protect you from costs for repatriation. And no one knows which border China might next close.

The only thing different is the local Infectious disease physician here has emailed all of us but nothing new.

Have to say the fact that the Chinese have quarantined many millions of their citizens and have fast tracked 2 1000 bed hospitals suggest things are worse than what has been acknowledged.

Well seeing as the population is mostly made up of expats, Malaysians and Chinese I think they probably could’ve come up with some Chinese food without too much trouble.

Might also be that with only a couple of days to set the place up, they didn't have time to generate a comprehensive menu, or a more Chinese style menu...

But some people there would likely complain no matter what was served and media tend to air the more extreme rather than the non-controversial responses. Sort of like the pax interviews after any airline based incident where the most shrill responses are what is reported.

Today I was required by corporate policy to change from SQ to EK flying from Perth to London next week.

The risk of exposure/14 day quarantine due to another passenger on SQ was judged too high and too disruptive.

Not surprisingly the QF/EK business fares ex Perth are now astronomical. $14k QF9/10 🤮

I did notice fare bucket availability on EY seems to be a bit drier than normal...

Wondering what the normal cabin temperature is after receiving this email from Vietnam Airlines. They will be keeping cabin temp at 26 degrees.

Make everyone uncomfortable and sweaty as well as nervous about the virus...

Just about as useless as masks are to people who are not sick IMO. They're not fitted properly, people are not trained to use them properly and their effective life is minimal at best. People need to know how important regular and thorough washing of hands is and make conscious efforts to not touch the face/nose/eyes without washing/disinfecting (I am shocking at this but trying to be conscious of it as I head overseas for 4 weeks tomorrow)

Singapore Raises Virus Response Level, Now on Par With SARS

Wondering if this is payback for Australia's refusal of entry to Chinese citizens from China who were mid air last Sat when the ban on entry was announced, and then denied entry when they landed in Australia?

26 degrees in a metal canister is so freakin hot! I’d need to drink a lot of water but then we have that 100 ml issue if they aren’t going to serve it except on request. I also don’t understand about the heat thing. Singapore is warmer than that currently isn’t it?

wow. 26 degrees. I’d cancel any of my flights with that sort of temperature on board.

Friend flew china eastern the other day, was told to take the blanket and pillow home as they’d be replaced for each flight.

Will be interesting to see if airlines reinstate meals for short flights once this passes.

We know that bookings on carriers like CX have dropped, and passengers are being transferred to other airlines to avoid mainland China/ HKG and so on.

But has there been any noticeable dip in bookings between Australia and (a) the USA - which has travel restrictions for some or (b) England/ Europe, which (largely?) doesn't?

Or are these routes just seeing normal numbers of passengers for February?

You must, like me, have your "enhancement" (bulldust) detector on in case the smarties at airlines like CX have deduced that this 'health' initiative can turn into a useful 'cost saving' measure.

A few days ago I read reports of mainland Chinese students "boasting" in Mandarin online how they'd managed to enter Australia by not disclosing they'd been there within the last 14 days, and so making it through Border Force-manned airports.

Is Border Force laboriously manually checking passports of passengers of Chinese ethnicity who arrive on other than nonstop flights? I appreciate there's nothing to stop those of other nationalities also using 'one (or more) stop' flights if they've been in the 'restricted areas' in tghe last fortnight, and supposedly sneaking through immigrtion.

And what about entering USA? Is manual checking being undertaken, slowing entry down even more?

Hells bells, wait until Qantas seizes upon this latest enhancement! It will start as “For your convenience”

It was in the media the other day so hopefully border control are now looking more closely at such things on entry.

I see the mother who was very vocal initially about conditions on Christmas Island has gone out of her way now to praise the medical staff and volunteers who are looking after them and that conditions have improved. It was probably an initial shock after a very stressful few days and a long flight with young children.

Yes, settled down now from the fear and a very difficult start to the flights with the check in taking many hours, on the tarmac delays of many more hours with long sectors and transits. Some empathy from some people would not have gone astray. Some people have more resilience than others.
