I strike again. Was getting a bit worried.I am certain Australia do much better if I'm not watching. So I took the garbage out,had a little walk and come back with Faulkner just finishing his over getting 2 wickets.

Turned on at 3-39 and watched to 3-140 then went away for about 20 minutes... well the rest is history. All out 183.

Still India made 183 in the 1983 final and it was too much for the Windies. History never repeats as Split Enz says though.

The final was effectively over after the 3rd ball of the match...the Kiwis never recovered psychologically or on the scorecard after....

yea.. the aussies had the dream start. that first early wicket. it was pretty much over from then.

Big occasion, ground, crowd ... NZ simply got lost in the middle. Pretty disappointing game. SA/Aus would have been a great game.

that was exactly what i was going to say! NZ coming across just for the finals was perhaps a bit too much. the proteas with their pedigree would've been a lot more comfortable with the occasion

It could easily have been South Africa vs India.

Round robin and playoffs is still wrong. Play every team once and if you're still on top then you are the winner.

I was about to say the same.
It always astounds me that a fourth placed team at seasons end can end up being major premiers because of a few results in the last weeks.

It's good to see how teams handle the pressure on GF day. Some do it better than others...

And Australia never played South Africa.

Damn my conservative decision not to wear my Aussie cricket t-shirt into the Koru Club and on Air NZ flight yesterday afternoon! (whilst the game was on) Plenty of coverage on NZ TV this morning, mostly congratulating the Black Caps for getting to the big game, but also acknowledgement that they just ran into a red hot Aussie team during the match.

Right, that's cricket done for the season - now, golf at Cape Kidnappers tomorrow...

It did seem that NZ had won by making the final alone, so I read in the comments before the game. The final of the World Cup is hardly ever close, especially not in the last 20 years. If Australia is playing they either pile up an insurmountable total (2003, 2007) and strangle the opposition with their bowling or they do it the other way by blowing away the opposition when it bats first and end up chasing a meager total (1999, 2015).

Big crowd - 93 013 people. That's about an AFL grand final crowd isn't it? There are large areas behind the sightscreens lost so I assume capacity must be around 95K? Would have been a great atmosphere at the start of the game. Pity it wasn't sustained but at least Clarke got his send-off. He probably did well to get dismissed right at the end so he could walk off to a standing ovation and not get it lost in the winning of the final. Well done to B Mac for shaking his hand as he left.

Seeing the presentation with Sachin Tendulkar present it was amazing to hear the crowd roar every time his name was mentioned. I think I heard boos when they named the ICC president though!
