Can you believe we've clocked up >30 days in Paris and haven't gone up. Have tried a few times but the queues were always massive ... sadly, this wasn't an issue this visit.

Yes.. I've been to Paris a few times but haven't been to Versilles either...
Fontainebleu is in easy reach from Gare de Lyon (where the famous Le train Bleu restaurant awaits for a visit on the way back). We were able to use our Paris Visite train/bus ticket (Zone 1-5) to get there and thought it was fantastic.
