Alan Joyce is an Australian citizen. I cannot understand or agree with the presumption that a persons country of birth adversely influences their business decisions and management of an Australian company

Princess, I dont honestly believe anyone thinks because he is (/was) Irish that he is any more or less competent, hell the walking bow-tie was just as bad, just he never shutdown the airline. More likely it is the usual Australian way that sees us find other "terms of endearment" for him apart from "Short overpaid oxygen thief", or would that be more amenable?

Wow, 20% MIGHT care that Qantas has Australian based staff / maintenance.

well 30% actually if we think that the 10% on jetstar might similarly care about Oz staff.

We now have a Leprechaun determined to find the pot of gold in another country... and I say to him, your welcome, off you go, just leave our once great airline here and alone... maybe we can find someone who wants to keep Australian Icons IN Australia

Seriously, people, as a country of immigrants (barring the original inhabitants of course), we've really got to get over this. I suppose those who find AJ objectionable because of his obvious Irish heritage must be incensed at other Irish/Scottish/English/German/French/etc/etc/etc heads of government departments and corporations?

What about Geoff Dixon, did we all love him because he was a lovable Aussie knock-about?

Is this what the union movement and its supporters are made up of? Racists and xenophobes? Goodness me. I'm embarrassed.

Moopere, this was meant as a joke, as a decendant of boat people myself (2nd Fleet) I realise that we cant bring into heritage all our leaders or we will sound like the xenophobes you believe us to be... lighten up, I personally dont care if he is from Mars, he is a joke and that was the point... would you prefer "undertall waste of space"?

Quick question?

Did you submit your resume when the CEO position was being considered?

Quick reply: nup, but I cant count, like getting unjustified pay rises and have an inordinate belief in myself, so I suppose I will have to be a walk-up.

Racist? seriously? Xenophobic?

I'm not scared of him and he is not strange or foreign - so not xenophobic

My heritage in part matches Mr Joyce's so it's not racist - I can say what I want about my own kind. :p

Sorry. This has taken me off on a tangent. I'm trying to find a short person phobia. No luck so far.

But I have decided that while I'm concerned I don't have Arachibutyrophobia.

I do have Agraphobia, Ballistophobia (in some cases), Carcinophobia, Coprophobia, Emetophobia, and maybe Nomophobia.

Probably not Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. *breathe* ;)

Definitely not Genophobia, Gymnophobia or Gynophobia

And I'm not going to say where I am with Novercaphobia.

Righteo then.

From following posts it seems it was just me who took it the wrong way - plus, of course, my post was not only a response to your own, there have been dozens, if not hundreds of fairly outrageous suggestions levelled at AJ through the prism of his obvious unhidden heritage.

But I've heard he is one of those creatures from Connacht......., or is he a monster from Munster, or a unionist from Ulster. He's certainly not like us superior folk from Leinster.

No, tide has not turned, just that the 'tough man' PR has had a better run, with irrational dreaming of what may arise. Would Branson do things differently? - most probably. QF stonewalling - playing 'no deal' is not negotiation. The public would sing a different tune if they knew QF is to be shut down in a re-birthing operation. (AKA Grand Plan). This pre-supposes legal opinion to get around the sale of QF Act actually sticks or does not change.

FW has 21 days. How likely will FW give a pay and condition cuts, and remove linkages in the face of 'no deal' when they already signaled 'unreasonable' ? Secondary strikes on 'New offshoots' ?. 21+21 = 42 days until 15 December - Time to really put the boots in (either side here).

QF should be getting CASA 'rules' changed - but hey - why are they not trying. The real outcome is that both QF and the Unions may think twice in filling election campaign coffers if a snap election happens.

This may be somewhat simplistic, but if Qantas wish to remain as the Australian Flag carrier, then employ, administer and maintain in Australia!

I remember it wasnt too many years ago that Asian Airlines used to come to Sydney for their Maintenance, but years of greed (shareholders and possibly staff as well) have eroded what was once the world leader.

We now have a Leprechaun determined to find the pot of gold in another country... and I say to him, your welcome, off you go, just leave our once great airline here and alone... maybe we can find someone who wants to keep Australian Icons IN Australia, rather than sell off our heritage as successive previous Governments (both varieties) have been quite happy to have happen.

Yep you are right. And those who forget that are burying there head in the sand. It appears to me that for the last few years the Qantas Board has been trying to ensure that either Qantas is taken over or is relocated to Asia. Talk of loyalty to Quantas because it is an Australian icon is now out of date. This applied when it was owned by the Australian people, ie when it was a Statutory Body of the Commonwealth Government. It is now controlled by a minority who have a majority shareholding, and this minority is only interested in one thing, maximising their investment at the expense of others.

It is interesting to read comments of those who say they will now get lower airfares from Qantas as the company tries to re-establish itself. Well that is probably the most selfish comment I have come across. Do we really want to put our own greed ahead of the interest of the Australian worker? I suppose the answer for some is yes. Greed before supporting our own.

Sorry mate - but a company's responsibility (a private company no less) is to maximise profits for its owners - the shareholders.

And the best job security for a worker - is a profitable company.

If the company struggles - more lay offs - it's as simple as that.

This isn't the public service.

Oh - and as far as your comment about lower fares.

Here's how it works -

1/ Lower fares means I buy my fare from Qantas - which supports the Qantas employee

or

2/ Higher fares mean I buy my fare from another airline - perhaps Singapore, or United, and the Qantas employee misses out.

Qantas is one of the most profitable airlines in the world, but it doesn't seem to equate to job security - just higher CEO pay.

Is that the Qantas employee from Wellington, or the Qantas employee from London, or the Qantas employee from South East Asia?

Speaking of which - why don't Qantas outsource the board and CEO? Be able to get a much better deal if they recruited them from Mumbai.
