Was a bit concerned about this so last night I opened another bottle of CH Merlot 2012. Took off the tightly wrapped aluminium foil that revealed the wine is almost upto the cork (see the attachments). Pulled the cork out (it had a great deal of resistance and came out with a pop). Cork seemed in a almost ew condition. Out of interest tried a bit right away and it is almost undrinkable - very tannic and green. Left it alone, prep a dinner and did a bbq and came back to in one hour and it made a profound difference, two hours later it was magnificent. Not sure when it peaked as we polished it off pretty quick after that! It felt as though it was 2-3 years old, still a lot of firm tannins, fresh fruit on the palate and long finish. Very well balanced with just enough acidity to deal with dryness without overdoing it. I think it can be cellared for another 4-5 years.I just noticed this posted on tWF
The 2012 Brookman Merlot is $9.90 at Dans, will take redbigot’s advice and leave it alone.
@redbigot 's post on tWF that I assume is being referred to:
There have been a lot of older CH wines being sold through various Woolies arms, Dan Murphy Secret Selections, 2013/2014 most recently. I don’t know of the provenance of these wines, but some of them are not in good condition and I and some of my subscribers have sent some back for refunds.
Maybe it was a luck of a draw and I was lucky so far, but so far I didn't find any spoiled bottled of both CH Shiraz and Merlot I bought at DM.
