Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Trying to contact Montara wine regarding the identity of the wines from the screw cap.
I'm 95% certain the j is from their jimmy brand. If you look at a wine label with it, it's the same font (see here - Jimmy). Doesn't mean anything though - they may have just used jimmy bottle tops for the wine. I'm glad it's not cork. ;)

If you talk to Montara I'd be asking them to confirm they supplied said wine to your wines, then asking if they bottled or re-bottled them with jimmy-branded tops when doing so.

Also interesting that there weren't any stickers or similar with preservatives, alcohol %, etc... which I thought was a legal requirement. Flashbacks to Signature. :P

Yes it’s likely the Jimmy wine bottle.

Unlike the Signature unlabelled / cleanskin, GWD didn’t mention the identity of the cleanskin when they advertised it. That’s why I have a higher expectation from this unlabelled wine this time.

Anyway, just enjoy what we have

Have any body tried wine yet? Ant view on if it is the reserve Shiraz or the lower range?

Looks like the RRP of this Wolf Blass Luxury Pack is wrong
Haha, mine just arrived after getting to an ACT depot last week then getting sent back to Chullora before another try at the ACT... I wish I knew what happened there.

$170 for a plat, black and four greys (2×shiraz, 1 x shiraz/cab and a chardy) sure thrashes the RRP and feels ok, but is it good value, particularly for mass produced reds like WB? I really don't know...

(I suppose I was on cellardoor so that it's a bit stupid to expect anything but...)

Tried it tonight. Doesn't taste like cheap, sweet, young, plonk to me. Does it represent a premium Grampians shiraz from 2013? No idea, but happy with it for the price paid. It poured a lot darker, and tasted a lot heavier, than I expected for a wine from the Grampains (the Vivino reviews for the Gold Rush shiraz match quite well). Would rather 12 bottles of this @ 75 than 6 bottles of WB @ 170. lol.

GetWinesDirect sent me $50 voucher as I haven't ordered from them for years.
Now I know why - really struggling to find some bargains. Some decent wines at average prices, but wouldn't want to stack up a dozen of $35/$50 wines at this stage.

Scorpion Venom Mixed Dozen 1240 Off Icon Edition v4 | Get Wines Direct - Looks like mostly paying for the Meshach and the rest is rrp inflated.

Any recommendations for a smart buy from them?

Try their 2019 Exile Shiraz. $24.99 per bottle when I last paid $30/ bottle for their 2017 vintage. I just tried one last night and it was really quite exceptional. So much so, I just went and bought a dozen of the 2019.

I have got the reply from James of Montara Estate yesterday and he reckoned those wines are a discontinued range called Jimmy Black, according to the Stelvin Screwcap identified. They were the premium label of the Jimmy Range and equivalent to Montara brand and fruit was grown at their 80 acre vineyard in Grampians at Ararat. No comment to the source of the wines.

I couldn't give a proper TN but I reckoned it's a nice wine, elegant and so smooth. Little sediment in the bottle to reflect the age of the wine. Happy to pay $6.25 a bottle for that and the taste is a lot better than some of the $20 a bottle of wine from Vinomofo.

I’m curious who is making it these days…when Colonial Estate first started out 20 years ago they were great wines but I thought financial troubles hit and now it’s just a label rather than an actual winery?

GWD or a close associate bought Colonial Estate when they went into administration more than 10 years ago.

Thanks - and still running it as a going concern? If so, it would make sense that the quality its still up there (but not @ $200/btl level that they were chasing previously)

I think the winery site was sold elsewhere, don't know about the vineyards, no idea where the wines are made. They did buy other labels in Barossa, I think one had a substantial winery site.

Sadly getwinesdirect is still the only place Colonial Estate wines are sold as otherwise their spam emails and annoying phonecalls from Nambour are so so so annoying.
I note that the 2017 was still using cork, but I think the 2019 vintage has moved to screwcaps looking at the photo on their website.
I agree that sooner or later the quality of the Exile shiraz will drop to match the selling price of $25/ bottle, but I have been buying a dozen on and off since their 2012 vintage and still seems to be going along with consistent quality. Cellarable for 10-12 years in my opinion.
