Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

When you see $480 wine sold at almost 90% discount it doesn’t matter what it actually is because it will most definitely be another failed Chinese export garbage.
No, this is a new label (one of many from a once reputable brand) made for a purpose to join the small but growing numbers that market this way.

I suspect the rot started some years back when they first offered some of their mainstream wines via Vinomofo, convincing those in the know to never, ever pay anything close to RRP for their wines.

It’s a failed export now offloaded in the domestic market.

Hewitson playing silly games again. They did the same with the 'ungrafted' range.

"$480" (it's actually $450) down to $50? What a joke.

It's curious that the wine is so new and newly listed that Google doesn't seem to find the TN even though the TN does appear on the winery site.
The TN provided appears very similar to this one from Wine Orbit...
Keil Estate Barossa Valley Single Vineyard Vin 55 Shiraz 2016 "his compelling expression shows dark fruit richness together with mocha, toasted spice, charcuterie and cedary oak characters on the nose. The immensely concentrated palate offers graceful mouthfeel as well as lavish texture and refined tannins. Seamless and multi-layered with a prolonged gratifying finish." 97 points

$480 -> $50? That definitely sounds like it will be high quality red(!).

Surely you can’t actually get away with that sort of marketing? And surely no one is buying it…? No other retail industry where someone would fall for that sort of garbage.

One of the reason why I deleted JD from my shop list.

Coles is set to scrap two of its liquor chain brands, Vintage Cellars and First Choice Liquor Market, to fold them under the better-known Liquorland banner in a bid to boost sales and claw back market share lost to its larger rival Dan Murphy’s and BWS.

I always thought that Vintage Cellars was a better brand (in my mind), but clearly I was wrong.

Apparently they are still planning to differentiate with First Choice being LL warehouse and VC changing to LL Cellars, with slightly different stock offerings
Sounds like specials will be consistent across the chains. Maybe not so good as I suspect the various cyclical cashback site offers will be less frequent

I guess all my survey responses were listed to.

My view has always been... Merge the 3 together under one brand and have the same pricing within all the stores and then go head to head with DM's. Bigger stores have bigger stock which in the end will force DM's/ BWS to react

DM's has completed scrapped being 'we are the cheapest/ no one beats us' model and you have to sit and google prices before you go into a store and I think LL could really gain a lot of market share here

Thanks for the tip. First time posting here and I must say I rarely have problems finding JD secret wines from the tasting notes. This one however, no can do!!
My rule for JD cellars, is if I cant find what it is I don't buy and once I've found it I always search for the JD secret wine in mainstream retail before I buy it. If I can't find it in Dans, or similar retail outlets I don't buy, so this one was a no from me

Any idea what is the Secret JD#854 Chardonnay deal today?

I assumed 2023 Kinship Chardonnay
but it is not an exact match

Thank you for that

JD mailer said "Matured in French oak (30% new) for 7 months" and the tasting notes on the website stated "French barriques & puncheons, 25% new -MATURATION 9 months" that is what threw me off the scent.

Speaking of Chardonnay, anyone know what this might be?

Possibly
Tuerong Park
Chardonnay 2020
Rating: 94
Fabulously elegant and delicately fragrant with nectarine, fresh fig, nougat, oatmeal and hazelnut aromas on the nose, leading to a beautifully rounded palate that's creamy and lingering. Well supported by refined texture and bright acidity, finishing seamless and sophisticated. At its best: 2022 to 2030. $45.00. www.dromanaestate.com.au. Sept 2021.

Specials aren’t even consistent within the brands! Though agree we may lose out with casbacks.
