Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Does anyone have any past experience using this type of thing?

I'm still using 8 of these I've had since the early 1990s, so there's no issue with their longevity. They help to even out temperature fluctuations within a day, but don't do much to more sustained changes, so if the place they're located in is subjected to extreme temperatures, the benefits might be limited. Having said that, bottles I've had stored in these in an insulated garden shed for up to 20 years generally have corks in very good condition. The only real downside (apart from the cost) is that wide or tall bottles don't always fit in the holes.

How much are they selling for now?

I'm thinking about picking up a few of these to assist in storing the vast amount of red wine I appear to have bought this winter over the summer months.

Cellar Box

I have a decent underground garage which keeps the general temperature fairly low in the summer but heat can get in when the door is opened etc and subject it to fluctuations.

Does anyone have any past experience using this type of thing?

No experience, but I would be VERY worried about the following claim:

'Correctly used, the Cellar Box keeps the annual range of fluctuation between a low of 12°C - 14°C, in winter and a high of 21°C - 23°C in summer.'

$60 a piece

I was logging the temperature of mine with an indoor/outdoor min/max thermometer. The temperature inside the cellar boxes varied less than the temperature in the rest of my wine storage area, particularly on a short-term basis, but it definitely varied over the course of the year. If the ambient temperature is high or low for an extended period, the temperature in the boxes definitely got outside that range.

What's the cost per box? I'd only consider this for your most valuable wine if your garage otherwise maintains a constant temp. You need ~4kJ to heat up 6 bottles 1 degree C. If you have many bottles, plus the rest of the air volume to hear, opening and closing the door of your garage probably isn't going to do anything.

My Amex/Langton's purchase:

ATA RANGI Pinot Noir, Martinborough 2014
CLONAKILLA Murrumbateman Syrah, Canberra District 2013
HEAD Red Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2015
ROBERTO VOERZIO Nebbiolo, Langhe 2013
SONS OF EDEN Romulus Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2013

Total $306.50 Uncle Amex chipped in $150.

Actually was announced last week.

I was shocked at how much some of the prices have risen over the last decade.

I know I purchased the Rosehill for $22 and the Maurice O'Shea for $50 when they were released in 2006.

I wont be paying more than double that price for them now.

Mount Pleasant were in the Halliday best value wines section in the 2016 companion.

I can imagine the Hunter wineries thinking if ever there was a vintage for a nice price rise it was the 2014!

Chuck in a referral bonus and 8% CR and it's actually closer to $12.50. Might be worth a shot!

Tempting, although the other wines put me off a bit particularly the Bit O' Heaven.

In truth though I'm just trying to talk myself out of it because the missus has banned me from buying any more wine ahead of our trip to The Margaret River at the end of September.
