Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I picked up a 6-pack of the SV, some pinot and chardonnay on day of release. Two (Grenache noir and another red blend) were sold out within a few hours - I assume these were in small quantities

I missed those two as well, as there were issues with access and I had to wait for them to get back to me unfortunately. Didn't bother with the Chardonnay as I dont tend to like it, but got a couple of the pinot and SV.

Bugger, will be interesting to hear views on those others in due time. I must admit I only got a few of the Chardonnay as tasters. I have enjoyed their Pinot though

Having not tried either before, Im very keen to see what they are like.

Thanks everyone for the heads up

Unfortunately the Filsell has gone up more than $3- a bottle since yesterday making is note quite as attractive :(

I got some of the '13 back in November from WM for less than $15 so I am happy to wait for a better deal on the '14 a bit closer to $20

Yes, what a surprise, a price rise before a :mad:discount!

Filsell for $15!!FFxx_xoo How did I miss that?!

Drinking the Saltram Winemakers Reserve Shiraz 2014 tonight. Nice balanced wine but not significantly robust for my taste. Was ordered through CM at around $11 with usual discounts and cashback along with Amex credit.

Me too. Fabulous value at around $120 after discounts. Looking forward to trying that First Growth!

I did too. The only one in that pack that you're paying above RRP for is the Heirloom, and I've already tried that one a few times and I reckon it's worth it (even if it's been seen cheaper).

How far forward are you looking to trying that First Growth? I found a Tyson Stelzer review of this vintage on Dan Murphy's website (96 points) in which he quoth, "Such is its wall of tannin that it must not, under any circumstances, be approached shy of twenty years in the cellar."

Interestingly there is a rating of just 88 points from Jeremy Oliver in his guide on the NAB website that was posted the other day. (Yes he marks hard, but he's apparently preferred five of the six other vintages he's reviewed since 2000, so apparently not its finest year in his view.) Dug up the text of the review on the Cracka website:
https://www.crackawines.com.au/product/2008-parker-coonawarra-estate-terra-rossa-first-growth - apparently he doesn't like the finish: "rather dried out and lacking freshness, with herbal undertones".

94 points from Nick Stock; he doesn't make any big deal of the tannins and describes the finish as "classic Coonawarra":
http://www.goodfood.com.au/drinks/2008-parker-coonawarra-estate-first-growth-20121128-2af8u.html

And of course, 95 from Halliday.

For $20 it's certainly a punt I'll take. Surely it can't be the dud in the pack! and nothing else in there is a dud either.

Both Wozza and I have reviewed the 2008 First Growth in the Wine I Like thread. I concur that there's still a big wall of tannin to overcome. Needs sleep for some time IMHO. The 2006 I had a few months earlier is more approachable right now.

Yeah JO hates upfront tannin no matter how big the fruit. I love BIG and I love subtle/savoury wines ("savioureee" LOL-like French Scrabble-all the vowels) with a llloooonngg finish.

And these were the reviews that made me happy to buy this and hold onto it for a few more years. Plus, a Rhodges says, the heirloom is the only one were paying over the odds for so it's no bad deal however the first growth ends up.

I've tried all the other wines in this pack and am happy with them in the $15-$20 range so there's not much pressure on the first growth in my mind even if it is a bad vintage.

I don't think it's a bad vintage - just not something to drink now - hold onto it for a while. It's not a "I can't wait to get stuck into this" type of wine.

I've tried all 6 too, and would say the PFG 08 is the worst of the bunch! I've tipped two 08s down the sink in the last 3 months. The tannins are so harsh and drying that it makes it undrinkable at this point. What's odd for me, was my first two bottles we're really nice. It's leaning me towards the WM batch being badly stored given the huge bottle variation I've experienced. That, or I've stored them badly (unlikely, as they are the only bottles to have been donated to Sydney's sewer system).

But, all that said, you can't argue with the price and the other wines are all good ones. I'd take a punt if I wasn't lording it up in Europe.

Thanks for the feedback Wozza. I might take Stelzer's advice and not approach before 20 years!

WineMarket had a 20% off sale yesterday - JULYXMAS was the voucher code. You can try and see if it still works.

Thanks AC, shame, the site says that the deal is still valid until midnight tonight but it tells me it's expired when I try to use it. I've emailed them to complain and aksed them to provide me with a code to obtain the deal given that it is in fact still advertised

See post 4428 (and many more). These amateurs stuff up all the time. Hope you get the discount.

I suspect that their site hasn't been updated. T&C of the deal were that it expired last night. 20% off is a regular occurence, so just be patient and it'll roll around again.

Well qaz, I beat Ozbargain by one day! And they don't mention any of the Willow Bridge wines. The 2010 Black Dog shiraz is well decorated at wine shows and is prob closer to $40 rather than the usual $50.
But that 2014 Gravel Pit shiraz was so good I was not tempted!
I think it really worth it to purchase one bottle of something on sale as 6 or 12 pack just to see one's thoughts (not always possible due to access or timing).

more for us - don't forget the tempranillo, perhaps the best value of the lot :)

btw Different Drop also have them, with 10% off your 1st order and free delivery for $150+ orders

Been watching that, it's been that way for a while with the Bilmore. Question is - is it really a 96 pointer? Anyone here who swears by it?

90pts Winefront, 88/89 Huon Hooke

Just received an email from Vintage Cellars offering 2014 Teusner The Independent Shiraz Mataro - 3 for $60, plus bonus cellar share worth $25 for Cellar Club members. Effectively $11.67 a bottle, compared with $27 from winery! Seems like a great deal. Anyone tried the wine? I've enjoyed Mataro and Shiraz Mataro, but don't recall having this particular one, though I know Teusner is well regarded.

92pts Winefront, 83/84pts Huon Hooke - possibly worth the risk for $12/bt

I called them about this and the guy was great. They let me get the discount by refunding me the 20% after I'd made the purchase. This may even mean I get the cash rewards on the full $165 too....
