Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Looks like they have closed the books.
I and a few other members of my Forum luckily scored a membership some time back, but the people I referred recently for this deal have been knocked back with the reason "it's only for family and friends of Joval Group". This site is an offshoot of a large liquor wholesaler, so I guess they have to be careful of offending their retail clients and limit access.

Hey Redbigot - is there any update on this - been scouring the internet for a referral email!

Not sure if this means that new VIC customers receive $20 off their first order (minimum $100 spend) via referral, and $40 off their second (no minimum spend) placed by tonight (standard 10,000pts + bonus 10,000pts)?

Anyway, just in case the bonus points do indeed expire today, I've ordered Domaine Garon Côtes-du-Rhône La Part des Vivants 2018 - GW94 - $39.89 ($42 elsewhere) - unlike most grenache-based Southern Rhône CdRs, this is Northern Rhône syrah-dominant (though also available is Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources 2015 for $119.99)

The SC Pannell Smart Grenache is the closest in quality for my tastes. Tonic Grenache is different style but smashes QPR at under $30

Haven't opened my Pannells yet (McDonald or Smart), but did enjoy Thistledown Smart recently - Head Old Vine is perhaps my pick for value, though I'm looking forward to trying the 2019 Tonic after having the 2017 last year

That's better than the Cellar One price of $117/6.

not with a $20 referral to make it $16.17 :)

Tried to get my money back on some dud cork under wraps wines from Dan Murphy's. Could tell right away the person wasn't interested in coming to the party by the body language. Wasn't even interested to look at the bottles. Tells me I have to take it to one of the stores that are distribution centres as they can't bring it up in their system even though I had the receipt and original box with their order number. Anyone else run into problems like this? I'm concerned that if I bother making the trip to one of these centres, I may be met with the same lack of care.
Was it an opened bottle?
I have returned a few under wraps in various DM stores, no questions asked, as long as you have the invoice.

2 opened, 3 not. Returned today at another store and absolutely no problem. The friendly staff member was happy to help. They were actually going to give me the full list price back of some $380+. Thought about it for a second but honesty got the better of me and I pointed out it should only be $74.50.

I'll think twice before purchasing any more wines under cork. This is the 4th or 5th lot lot that have been dodgy from various suppliers, and only the second lot returned.

Thanks again all for the replies.

I found a couple of store specific Dan Murphy clearance items today. Might be interesting if you’re out in North West Sydney (sorry if they’ve been mentioned before). Serafino BDX $11 (Top Ryde), Fox Creek JSM $11 (Eastwood), Henschke Johanns Garden $27 (Eastwood). Plenty of stock left.

Thanks for that! Picked up today and got a nice mini vertical.

You are a very honest person! Glad it all worked out for you.

First up, Bravo!! the world would be such a happier place if everyone was decent and honest like you :)

As for corks, I agree. The last experiment I did with that ended badly - an order of Raul Joffre argentine wine via Dan Murphy's. Two out of the dozen horribly corked.

I do love a cork closure, but in the new age in Australia, there is either little expertise in this system for local wines, or completely uncontrolled storage situations in the supply channel for product brought in from overseas. I would trust far more an Argentine cork if I was buying the wine in that country.

Nice. I loved the 2015 Johanns, very bright and raspberry, enjoyable jubey nose. The 2017 didn't grab me as much. I actually didn't mind the Serafino BDX either, i wasnt expecting much, but i really like the edge that the Cabernet Franc adds. There were dozens of bottles on my first visit, shame that when i decided to try it there was only 4 left.

Cork taint has nothing to do with storage conditions, travel etc, if the tca compound is present in the cork it enters the wine as soon as the cork is inserted, it is unpleasantly evident in very small concentrations.
" Reported TCA thresholds in wine are typically in the range of 2 ng/L for detecting a noticeable difference and 6 ng/L for true recognition. TCA levels below the 2 ng/L difference threshold can still impact a wine, usually described as "muted" aromas and flavors."

Interesting. I am an amateur in these things. I would have thought that a cork enclosure, stored vertically for an unknown period and in extremes of temperature, could be detrimental to a wine.

Yes, that is a different issue. What you describe is more likely to lead to an oxidised wine due to air/oxygen entering the bottle due to cork movement and shrinkage on drying out, smelling and tasting volatile, like vinegar. Nothing to do with tca-related taint, which is the usual problem described as "corked". There are numerous possible faults in wine, caused by the production procedure, bottling closure and bottling process as well as storage light and heat issues post bottling.

Looking forwards to it. Didn't even think to get the serafino though... with all the recent mount mary, domaine A, cullen deals ☹
