Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

The Langi is a very good wine as rule. I haven't had the 2011 but I wouldn't buy it, even at that price, just based on the vintage. 2011 was a very bad (wet) year for Vic & SA (among others). Generally poor quality and generally poor ageing profile. Hard to find much in the way of reviews for this vintage which always worries me.

May be a good buy but personally I'd want to try it first.
The most reliable reds from 2011 were from Western Australia. South Australia was very difficult due to wet conditions hindering ripeness and allowing rot even where chemical treatments were applied. I bought only about 150 bottles from 2011 vintage, usually wines I tried before buying. Although most of them were quite drinkable, they all from SA showed some negative aspect of the vintage, especially mixed fruit ripeness, mulchy aromas and flavours. Compared to 2010 and 2012 where I bought over 600 bottles from each and have had almost universal success as they age.

There are always some good wines produced in bad vintages, but IMO (and experience) it's often not worth the chase, especially when bracketed by two very good vintages.

I'm just up to a full 12 months since I bought anything from Dan Murphy/BWS as are a few others I know of. I don't think Dan misses me or them as we mostly bought things where they probably had little margin and took advantage of the annual free freight deal on small quantity orders.

It seems the new management of the divested company are smarter at keeping the customers that make them money despite the dearth of sharp deals on desirable wines that kept me buying previously.

Not my experience at all. Whilst 2011 is generally acknowledged as not a great year, it's not correct to state it was universally 'very bad'. It's also the case that it wasn't regarded as bad in all parts of Australia. Check the Hunter Valley, for example. Most just see the bad ratings for that year and jump on board the derision train without understanding how things actually work.

I've had many excellent 2011 aged wines (including from South Australia) and have no doubt that this will continue.
Yep gems can be found in bad years. For example in the years that Penfolds don't make 707, expect the grapes that would otherwise have gone into 707 to make their way into 407, as an example.

I'm pretty much the same. I think they let the pricing errors guy go.

Always exceptions but outside of Hunter & Margaret River I steer clear of 2011s and there isn't much Hunter Red that's good and reasonably priced anyway (IMO). MR cab from 2011 is good.

I'd love to try a bottle of the 2011 Langi but I wouldn't spring for a half dozen. I'd bet it's clearance price for a reason.

Used to buy ML Ghiran back when the price was reasonable. From memory 2012 was the year when RRP jumped to > $100. The 2011 vintage was below average for obvious reasons and it comes with significantly shorter cellaring potential hence the DM clearance.

I can see St Hugo Barossa shiraz 2019 on clearance, store dependent, after CB will be just over $24 per bottle.
Good deal or average deal?

Thanks - I picked up 6 clearance Freycinet Louis Pinot I have been watching @ $16.54 after the capped CB

Nice 👍

Couldn’t find anything interesting apart from a lonely bottle of LEAS Chardonnay. Probably don’t need anymore but @ $58.12 it was hard to resist ;)

Updated, Cap at $25 now 😢
Rather than chase hard to find wine bargains maybe I'll settle with a bottle of single malt.

Edit: Done, the Arbelour was the only SM close to prices being charge elsewhere. Not a big fan of Speyside scotch but there you go. Prefer barley that has been kissed by the winds of the Atlantic.

Just looking back through my CR records and last 6 of my BWS purchases going back to 6 December still showing as PENDING! Considering this one is for $25 I am becoming concerned. Has anyone else had issues getting paid by BWS?

It seems BWS takes longer to approve cashbacks from Cashrewards and ShopBack. I can see purchases from November still pending while on the other hand they approved all my December cashbacks done via Cheddar.

Giving this a shot, $66 down to about $25 with CB. Anyone tried it before?
