Discussion on Cats, Moggies and Felines in general [with Pictures]

One of my friends in Glasgow has the most delightful cat I've ever seen. She is a red tabby Maine Coon, a sort of ladylike version of Garfield. I'll get a picture of her the next time I'm over.

Oh, I posted those pictures from my phone - they are so huge on my PC - apologies everyone - talk about "in your face" - even the Kats are a little embarassed - their photos are bigger than they are!

I have 3 Burmese cats. Despite having 2 litter trays, one if the cats does it's poos right next to the tray rather than in it!

Anyone else experienced this? Any tips to stop it will be gratefully accepted.

Is the tray always clean? Sometimes they learn the right place but the crystals/paper/clay is too dirty for them.

Maybe try 1 tray of substance 1 and 1 of something different? I like crystals as they don't track as bad and absorb the smell well.

Yep, - this is quite common with rag dolls and I think they are part burmese. We have now trained ours to poop on paper - he refuses to use the litter tray. That's better than on the floor and you can dispose of it easier. And I've heard exactly the same problem from three other rag doll owners.

Yeah, my half rag dolls do it occasionally, but it does seem to be mostly when the trays are dirty.

Good luck with it!

Both trays have crystals and are regularly cleaned. All 3 use the trays for wee wee but not for No2.

I will try changing one tray to clumping litter.

This is my Ruby. She runs the rule at my in-laws, as our place would be too dangerous. She wasn't afraid to take on the dogs (cougher spaniels) if they got too close!ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1398995240.271263.jpg

Have you ever watched "my cat from hell"?

Might be territorial thing or the perhaps the litter boxes are in the wrong position.

Are they using the tray but its just not landing in the right place?
You can get quite large litter trays with deep sides , and an optional lid (with an optional flap on the door once they get used to it to keep the smell in. ) they even have charcoal filters in the lid.
As previously mentioned regular cleaning , n + 1 litter trays ,( where n =no of cats)
Give options on litter , and some cats will only use trays if there is LOTS of litter.
Low traffic areas and no-where near food is also recommended although that doesn't sound like the issue here.

This litter tray issue. We could have a litter tray the size of a sandpit and it still wouldn't matter. We've tried pellets, crystals, and all the usual products. But flat paper works fine.

I can only think they don't like the feel of "shifting" particles under their feet. Maybe try just layers of flat paper (newspaper?) in the litter box and replace it all the time?

It doesn't matter if the tray is perfectly clean with him. Still wouldn't deposit. He'd go in and check it though.

Pushka is quite dangerous but she's also been badly injured in a cat fight. She's inflicted several injuries on me and one time I needed a course of strong antibiotics as the puncture wounds close immediately and within an hour my hand had swelled. She's old and blind now but still manages to climb fences and hiss at the raggie. He doesn't understand her at all. :p

One of my two Siamese does this occasionally. Usually it's because she mis-positions her backside - her front's in the tray back her rear is outside.

Another reason is cats like a clean, fairly smell-free litter tray. Although the tray may be relatively clean perhaps one of the cats has done something particularly whiffy.

Our cats spread a bit of litter around the tray while burying their do-dos. Perhaps the smell of this make a cat think it OK to go nearby.

Anyway, good luck. I've never solved the problem.

Interesting about paper. I've tried crystals and pellets but our cats will only use clay. How do you find paper re smell?

Anyone tried shredded paper? I produce large quantities of that which I take to the local pet shop. It occurred to me it might make good litter.

Shredded paper could work. Certainly environmentally good. And cheaper to replace when it gets smelly. So you could replace it daily and not be too expensive to do so.

We remove the soiled papers daily and wipe the floor underneath with a wet wipe. No odours at all.

In fact the kitty litter tray for the other cat is worse as while solids are removed promptly we don't replace the crystals daily, obviously. Too expensive. So that does have an odour.

I reckon I prefer the paper to the litter tray actually.
