Discussion on Cats, Moggies and Felines in general [with Pictures]

This.

I keep advising my clients that their cat will (almost) never drink from the water beside/near their food unless they are desperate and then will only drink a minimum amount. You are always advised to provide water distant to their food and many cats like running water or water that has recently run maybe they think they've found a stream in the jungle?): hence they like to drink from the water in the shower recess. Whenever Mrs C and I head for a shower, we crack the tap in the adjacent bath so that it has a fine thin stream. All our cats (three) will then jump into the bath and have a long drink.

If you don't have a bath or you don't like the idea of running water, there are devices such as Drinkwell fountains (ask google) that provide recycling running water.

Laziness and inadequate water consumption are two very real risk factors for cats developing Feline Idiopathis Cystitis (FIC) or struvite (crystals) cystitis.

The above constitutes professional advice.

This might be one of them:
MrsTheEmu bought this little pearler on e-bay for about $35.
4.5 litre capacity, it has a little 12v submersible pump (with transformer/plug included) which is virtually silent unless the water level drops below the point where it starts to cavitate. Both cats drink from the 2 top sections where the water is flowing and bubbling, never from the bottom bowl. It has a charcoal filter inside and the whole thing is dead easy to pull apart, clean and reassemble. As far as I recall, they drink from this thing pretty much exclusively.
We've had it for about 2 years now without a hiccup.
Unfortunately I have no idea what brand name of the damned thing is... Pet Water Fountain or something, she tells me. Sorry...

My furball has one similar to this - got it from My Pet Warehouse. She refused to drink still water, so got one of these and she loves it. Just got to remember to wash it weekly - as otherwise she refuses to drink.

The things we do for them!

Dammit. Showed the cat the picture and now he wants one.

Always wondered why ours prefered to drink out of showers, sinks, bedside glasses and the fish pond!

We have a fountain for our cat, but he still insists on making us run the bathroom tap at least twice a day. AND I see him drinking from the fountain. He also likes to spend several minutes splashing the water all over the place before he drinks, so the fountain lives in the bathtub!

Part of our welcome home ritual (me arriving home from work) is tummy tickles and cuddles then Petal drinks from the laundry tap whilst I clean the litter box.

Then it's meal time and later on more drinking from the tap. At various times during the day if she wants a drink I'm led to the tap, The water bowl sits forlornly on the floor and is rarely used in my presence. Still it's there is required.

One of mine only drinks from the fishtank. She's mad at me now because I put some plants in there that interrupt her pawing at the water *rolleyes*

Clearly our Cat has no natural instincts. He has only drunk from the fountain once in 3 days and that was after I gave him a tablet and he couldn't get to the bathroom. Progress I guess.

Found the Cat snoozing in the neighbours backyard with a new friend. They were quite content just to hang out for an hour or so.

Re drinking from puddles. I saw on the SuperVet TV program about the charismatic Irish vet, that they had to save a cat that had inadvertently also drunk anti-freeze in the puddle. It took them a long time to find out what had poisoned it and it was touch and go.

Our old cat Patsy would drink from puddles and the water feature outside in preference to a bowl, though one evening we got quite a shock to discover her lapping water from the glass that MrLtL always had on the bedside table for if he was thirsty during the night. The question was how often she had done it before

Oh what a clever cat I have. She is an indoor cat and doesn't wear a collar. However I want to walk her outside occasionally and have been getting her used to seeing the lead and collar.

Today I put the collar on and she was quiet, so I put the lead on and took her outside. She walked towards the lawn and into a bush. A couple of seconds later she emerged from the other side sans collar and lead.

Then it was back inside and off to sleep with a self satisfied grin on her face.
