Discussion on Cats, Moggies and Felines in general [with Pictures]

Wah, I think we may not be minding the divine Missy cat on Thursday while next door's have their open home. Someone else on our floor wants to have her :(

Neighbours have only had her a few weeks as if they have a pet when they move into the independent living unit they can keep it but not get one once they are there so as they think it would be good company if one is left behind, they got Missy now.

My grandmother adopted her former neighbour's cat after they moved out and left it behind. He had spent a lot of his time across with her anyway.

She took him when she moved into independent living (after Poppa went into care). Since Poppa passed away, the cat has become quite key to her wellbeing and purpose and gives her something to focus on.

I can imagine that having a pet would be an important part of an elderly person's life. My aunt (who is a lot younger than my mum) and her companion are in a retirement village in Perth. They don't have a live animal but a 3/4 size toy border collie that sits on a chair. She says they often talk to it!

I bought 2 small tins of cat food, on special for $1 each. My husband found them this morning.

Me: Its only in case we notice its not gaining weight or looks extra skinny.
Him: Ive seen the cat, its getting fed!
Me: Creepy Cat seems to like you more than me, its always around when youre home.
Him: grumble, hmmm, goes looking for it under his car (usual spot lately)

$1 per micro tin for cat food and thats a discount!. How much is the price of the tin itself. The markups must be enormous. The ads for these cat food says it all. Pull some heart strings and hype up the emotional connection between owner and cat and prices escalate.

No idea but it was stressful. Chicken in strips or lamb in jelly or tuna mornay chunks - how do I know what Creepy Cat would eat!

The cat milk we used to get when it was a kitten is more expensive than the milk for the humans. The cat milk is the cat food section as well which is means instant prices escalation

Its something like $4.80 per litre. Whiskas milk plus (long life). Wife says she drinks very small amounts so should last for a while? But doesnt milk goes off when carton opened.

Apparently cannot give cat the milk that the rest of us drink when it was still growing.

But now that the cat is grown we have gone to premium milk. Apparently the cat does not like normal milk.

A kitten has absolutely no need in its diet for cat milk - or regular milk. You could give goat's milk if you were set on feeding it.

They get sufficient calcium from the food they eat.

Normal milk would be fine, except some have lactose issues.
I think cat milk is lactose reduced and thiamine fortified.

Sorry i was not clear. The "cat milk" I mentioned above is actually cows milk but on the shelf marketed for cats. But $4.80 a litre? Must be very special milk.

With some of the rubbish put out by the mainstream pet food companies (ie supermarket stuff), I often think that some of the people who used to work in marketing for the tobacco industry now have found employment in the pet food industry. There is ABSOLUTELY NO INDICATION for milk in a cat over 7 weeks of age - it's purely a marketing gimmick.

Milk (of any description) is not a natural product for an adult cat.

{/end rant}

Our cat has gone on to 'sensitive stomach' dry cat food. So far the tummy issues have now improved. So he has a mix of dry food. Teeth cleaning. Furball reduction. And now sensitive stomach. Sigh. He's never liked milk.

Patsy was just a bit of a spitter - she would bolt food then throw up. She always tried to make it to the back door though at times it was on the carpet and one time the tub chair (the stain never did fully come out!).

Cats have different genetics and gut flora compared to us.

Reminds me of the morons who fed a kitten a strict vegan diet nearly killing it.

A KITTEN has almost died after its owners fed it a strict vegan diet.
The horrific case at a North Melbourne animal hospital has prompted a warning about the dangers of people "forcing ideologies" on their pets.
Lort Smith Animal Hospital veterinarian Leanne Pinfold said the kitten was brought in this month by its owners, who were believed to be vegan.
She said the kitten's diet of potatoes, rice milk and pasta had caused it to become critically ill.
"It was extremely weak and collapsed when it came in. It was almost non-responsive," Dr Pinfold said.
The kitten was given fluids via a drip, placed on a heat pad and fed meat.
It remained in hospital for three days after which the kitten's owners were given meat to feed their pet at home, she said.

You shouldn't need 3 foods to deal with all of that. The majority of Indoor Cat targetted foods with deal with furballs (that's just the inclusion of inulin or the like) and sensitive stomach (normally single source of protein or hydrolysed proteins or fish based). The mechanics of chewing kibble with provide the oral care.

Can I take a guess your vet is making the suggestions of Hills Science Diet products?

There are a number of people who feed their dogs a vegan diets too - ignoring that they are omnivorous carnivores.

It's even more so for cats as obligate carnivores - it is essential for them that they have high protein diets and they also need the meat to provide taurine which is critical for them.

I am all for people making an ethical decision for themselves re what they eat but they have no right to force that decision on to their pets who don't get a say and can't exactly pop out for a steak. The convenience of kibble means they don't even have to handle or buy meat anyway.

I am surprised Lort Smith (or maybe not actually) released the cat back to them and didn't refer the matter to the RSPCA for prosecution.

Of course cats have gentle stomachs.....what does that mean?

Given a complete and balanced cat food (vs a complementary food) which you should be feeding regardless provides a cat's needs in terms of calcium and taurine, there is no need for additional fortification from kitten milk!

It is a product that purely plays on peoples' sentiments re cats lapping at a saucer of milk etc

No - they didn't mention the brand just the function. He's been on kibble forever but still had the dental issues.
