Discussion on Cats, Moggies and Felines in general [with Pictures]

With respect to the vets here - vets generally get very little training on nutrition during their studies. What they do get is ordinarily delivered by Hills or Royal Canin representatives or content provided by them. And afterwards, the reps from those companies visit the surgeries as they are the only sellers of prescription diets.

Their foods on the whole are pretty average quality, especially for the price. There are much better quality foods for more reasonable prices at your local pet store.

These are the vets who will tell you to give calcium to giant breed dogs, not to feed raw chicken as you'll give your dog salmonella, raw diets are bad etc

I have chosen to move my old man over to a raw diet to manage his condition vs feeding him a Hills prescription diet.

As my mum says, "if you can't afford the Vet, don't buy the pet".

I should pass that piece of info on to my daughter who sometimes breeds Boxers. Weekend before last, I had to stump up for the vet bill, as after passing one pup, the second got stuck, so there was a quick trip to vet and an emergency caesar and removal of the now deceased stuck pup, 3 live and 2 more deceased pups. Mum was ok but the next day lay on on of the 4 pups, so we are now down to 3. Haven't heard anything this week.

Must take our kitkat to the vet this week for her yearly shots too. She is in good form and managed to con my wife into feeding her a second breakfast yesterday, even though I had already fed her.

I love Boxers. You don't see many around much any more. I hope there is a break even between the vet bills and the sale of the pups.

But why purposely breed them if shes obviously unable to afford medical care for the mother? Why put the female through all of that? For the money she thinks shes going to get out of the pups?

I couldn't be a breeder as I'd get so distressed by the puppies and kittens that don't make it :(. I'm such a sook for animals. But I'm with Denali on the vet issue.

About 50- 55 years ago my grandparents used to breed Pekinese (I know not a cat breed for this thread :) but following on from the past few posts). I don't remember much about it except that they often had whole litters which died. Grandma was a nasty piece of work (I can say that 'cos she was a relation) so I am glad they gave up breeding as the dogs probably had a miserable life with her. We have some doozy stories about her meanness!

Son had a girlfriend whose father didn't believe/want to/couldn't be stuffed paying for - his pets to be desexed. So when the inevitable happened he simply disposed of the offspring. I believe I showed my disgust.

I usually start my car and let it idle for a few mins (so the leather seat gets nice and toasty with the seat warmer) while I gather myself for the trek to work.

This morning my husband made a point to tell me to check my tires in case Creepy Cat was sitting on one so not to crush the thing when reversing. Considering the average cats reflexes, dont see it happening but it also tells me that he might be starting to come around at the idea of having a cat. Its gone from inanimate object to telling me to be careful of it.

Still havent fed it but it was still hanging around last night, tripping our sensors.

I hope she was a registered breeder (of boxers). There are a number issues in that breed that you need to be knowledgeable about what dog you mate to what. If anyone thinks breeding their pet is a good way to make some money then they are sadly mistaken - most breeders I know (and I know a lot!) run at a loss on their litters. You can guarantee too if there is going to need to be an emergency C-section then it will occur out of normal vet hours.

It also astounds me that people are willing to risk the lives of their beloved family pet for a few dollars.

Sorry - 'backyard breeding' is something that really irritates me. I see how much my friends put into breeding responsibly - spending thousands on importing cough from overseas especially to ensure that they are breeding for the betterment of the breed (which is what the ANKC Code of Ethics requires), to improve their lines, to carefully select matings so as not to continue problems in lines, the hours they spend dealing with puppy enquiries, the first few weeks where they sleep beside the whelping box to ensure there are no issues like Mum rolling on the pups, up hourly to bottle feed if mum rejects puppies, has no milk or even dies in whelping, the vet bills etc etc etc

Wise man.

My parents had a cat called Pirate before I was even born. Pirate liked to sleep on car tires and visitors always got warned but one didn't check :(

Yes, she is a registered breeder, has had success at shows and her dogs are always in demand. She also rescues and rehomes boxers. And as far as I can see quite often makes a loss overall on breeding, however she just loves the breed and their crazy antics.

Sorry for hijacking the kittycat thread.

When I'm too old for travelling, I'd love to rehome a Boxer. I'll be touch many years hence. Meanwhile, I could actually foster one btw my trips ...

OK CAT PEOPLE ! I need some advice on how to keep a cat OUT of our yard. We have new neighbours, they have a cat, the fence between us and them is a metal pool fence, which the cat can easily get through. It is using our garden as its toilet at the moment ! So what don't cats like so I can keep the cat out. I am thinking of chicken wire all along the fence at the moment !

I have this problem and I hope there is a soln. I have ringed the fence with bits of chook wire bent over as a deterant, and lots of other things, including throwing things at the cat. Now, if it sees me it takes off, but it is still here as of course it won't deposit in it's own garden, just mine, uphill of my vegetables.

Should be easily fixed.

Make a mild solution of white vinegar and water.
Buy a water pistol, or one of those pump up garden sprayers.(if spayer turn nozzle so it squirts not sprays) ...(Spayer Pun not intended:)

Best is to get the cat with it, they'll clean themselves.... Cats HATE the taste of vinegar.

Alternately, spay the pool fence where the cat comes through and maybe the top edge of fence if it can climb over.

Spray and repeat.

No harm to the cat.

(I've had cats all my life, but sometimes you need to keep the neighbourhood riffraff out

Good luck , but u should need it.

Get a Dog...

LOL! After posting about him ignoring the cave, tonight he decided it is back in favour!

And it's like they've never seen it before. There is one spot that our guy has as a permanent go to and that is an IKEA footstool directly in front of the heater.
