Discussion on Cats, Moggies and Felines in general [with Pictures]

Can anyone recommend a book or website about cat behaviours and personalities? My partner recently adopted 2 rescue cats and wanted to clarify a couple of behaviours she noted.

A slightly more balanced report than the "fake news" hysteria on some of the weekend TV news. The symptoms associated with this current outbreak are a combination of cerebellar and vestibular disease - in other words problems associated with balance and co-ordination. Media reports and social media reports of cats with high fever, elevated white cell counts, liver and kidney failure with sometimes progression to death are erroneously blaming BFF because their cat was eating it.

Parallel example: if you look in the fridge of most people convicted of murder, you'll probably find a carton of milk. However, drinking milk does not make you a murderer.

EDIT: I've just finished examining a completely healthy cat that eats BFF food: presented today with "BFF poisoning" because it's been sleeping all day. It cold and wet outside - what self-respecting cat is going to do anything else today apart from sleep inside?

I saw the media hysteria around the BFF recall but hadn't had time to review properly yet. I have a cat who was a victim (but recovered) from the Orijen issues 9 years ago.

I do find it amusing about the vets who rubbish supermarket and this type of food yet push Science Diet on their clients - which is a pretty average food at best (dog is even worse) and not befitting the price tag!

 I'd be concerned if my cats WEREN'T doing that today!

A further update on the BFF catfood issue: while testing of the food is still underway, it appears that the condition can be successfully treated with Thiamine.

Interesting. When he came home, the cat still wouldn't eat normal cat food, but went crazy for "tranquil daily treats" which I've just seen contains thiamine (in an unknown quantity). He's never eaten them before - craving the vitamins maybe? Great for us right now - he knows if he sits quietly for his ear prick he gets treats. Anyway, here he is, looking much happier in Dads lap :)rsz_20170502_193505.jpg

He is a beautiful looking boy :). Daughter's cats have the treats at times when there is something upsetting them.
Those big claws were certainly having a workout, and he was even purring for the first time since a kitten.

Our other cat loves the treats, he's never eaten them - such a turnaround now where he desperately paws at the packet. Off to vet tomorrow morning to see how his sugars are going - varying widely from 4 to 26 on home testing :s

Yes, I could see his claws out - looked like he was kneading away there. Funny about the purring; we had one cat that purred non-stop from the moment I picked him up as a kitten at the RSPCA, another only started to purr (and quietly at that) after we had had her for about 8 months.

Yes they are weird! He purred as a kitten, then never again until the other night. But loves his kneading.

Girl cat makes the foundations of the house wobble with her purr *shrug*.

But that's why we love them. They have such different personalities.

We once had a dribbler - when he was very happy, he would knead and then dribble on you :)

I had wondered if there was a Vit B1 deficiency issue involved. If it is, sounds like less than ideal manufacturing processes, or rather QA assessment to ensure that the products being produced met the complete and balanced requirements under the AAFCO standards.

Kitty remains back at the vet :(

Returned for next glucose curve and had not been really made a dent on current insulin dose, upped it again and got a big drop (but still above normal - 33 down to 12) so seeing what is happening if he's kept at the higher dose.

Luckily he quite enjoys his holiday there.

Hope Milboo puss can get it under control soon and be home again. Regardless of quite enjoying his time there, I'm sure his 'parents' would like him home with them.

One cat I had would wait at the front of the house waiting for me to come from work and when I pulled in would sprint to the backyard. I would open the window, where he would proceed to jump on me and start to lick my head.
