Yeah Markis I looked at TVL, but its a pain getting there. There are only red e deals on Wednesdays, for positioning. Driving to MKY is terrible on the Peak Downs due to roadworks. At least MOV has flights direct to BNE for a 100 or thereabouts.

Maybe see how you can get on the MOV TSV VA flights.

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

Well, couldn't help but be tempted by this... Dropped 64,000 (not 72,000) points, $510 (rounded) and 2 separate days of flying to pick up 800 status credits and pop me over the line to Platinum for the first time. Looking forward to the next 16 months. :D

May I ask the routing or where this is from? Cause for that outlay it's a bloody nice pick up!

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

CBR - SYD - HBT JASA Return. 200 SC's (x2 with the double status credit offer) = 400 SC's

10 hours from whoa to go with no overnight requirement. Mind you, I am lead to believe that there are quite a few good options out of Canberra for getting the points up. There may be some better ones out there.

Apologies, I had it wrong. CBR - SYD - HBT JASA Return was 32,000 (not 36,000) points and $255.54. Still equates to 400 SC's with the Double SC Email.

32,000 each way surely ?

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

Ok I know the average person would think I am crazy however I want to ask the AFF's if I should adjust my status run in May.

Currently have:

OOL - SYD - MEL - HBA

Overnight - hobart

HBA - MEL - SYD - OOL

JASA

I have just done a quick calculation and can squeeze in a HBA return - overnight in Melbourne

The time is just 40mins between arrival and departure in and out of HBA - but it appears to be the same plane - I arrive to HBA on 1015 and I depart HBA the next morning on 1012.

Now I may be able to use online check in (I have always had issues so never try anymore) - could I when boarding at OOL collect all boarding passes for the trip on the first day? I will be HLO. And on the Second day could I pick up all boarding passes at Melbourne on the 7am flight? I am just going to be short 70 status credits from gold and if I can add this extra flight in Y then I am just that much closer.

What is the cost of the Red e-Deals and the overnight accommodation in MEL?
Do you have a Double Status Credits Offer? Even if not, you could always get 80 SCs from OOL on another booking:

OOL-SYD Return
4 x Red e-Deals @ $150 = $600 (20 SCs return each return journey)
2 x Saver Fares @ $418 = $836 (40 SCs return)
1 x J Fare @ $898 (80 SCs return)

OOL-MEL via SYD Return
2 x Red e-Deal @ $292 = $584 (40 SC return)
1 x Saver Fare @ $460 (80 SC return)
1 x J Fare @ $1098 = 160 SCs

I can confirm that QF 1011/1012 is the turnaround. I did this recently as a positioning from MEL to then get back to CNS. So while it is doable, is the extra cost for Red e-Deals and extra pressure on making sure all flights run smoothly worth it compared to the above alternatives?

80SC would be easily earned by a long day on JQ going OOL-SYD with plus packs, unlikely to be over $400.

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

No, it's 16000 each way as per post 1 of the thread which shows circa 30k which can then be reduced.

Cheers you're right, I just checked it. Wow 32,000 plus ~$147 return that's not too shabby for 200 SCs.
Hmmmm.

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

Hi All

Yes double SC offer is on the table. I am actually in Brisbane but found this JASA worked best for me on the TIME POOR dates I have (may have 1 day in June that I can do some flying but restricted to daycare hours of 6.30am to 6.30pm). I have to pay for accommodation in HBA but in Melbourne I have the option of crashing on a couch for the price of a taxi ride to and from Essendon. The Red E-deal is $158 but the accommodation in hobart would be $127 so $30 difference for an extra 40 SC and 2000 points.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The current sale is $45 + $15 plus bundle each way.. 10 SCs each way = 4 * $120 + Booking fees = $480++ for 80 SCs.

I am wrestling with myself to do this or not. I have been NB for years and was going to hit PS for the first time next week (my year ends in June) and was quite happy. But using the above route I could get another 400 SCs and catapult myself to SG! This would be all self-funded, I have the points and the money, I am just questioning if this is really the sane thing to do, never done a status run before.

Friday Frenzy (or in the case of weekend frenzy like last weekend) often has the combo for $50, booking fees are easily avoided.

It sure is, when your checking in easy at counters, using airline lounges with partner, extra luggage etc etc, you'll notice the difference. Oh and don't forget the extra points yield when flying.

I'll be doing this too, next month. It's a good one because I actually have to go to Hobart.

It's always a YMMV thing - the main point to consider being how much QF/OW flying you will do over the next ~14 months, and hence how much benefit you'll actually get from higher status.

But, to my mind, if that amount is anything more than a handful of flights, I reckon you should do a run for SG. PS, unfortunately, means almost nothing, but at SG some decent benefits start to kick in - QC / international J lounge access, priority check-in, much better seating selection options, etc. Plus, as Limewood pointed out, the extra FF points you'll earn through status bonuses - "paying back" some of the "cost" of the run itself.

My one and only status run to date was a mammoth 3-day, almost 1,000-SC earning (with DSC) trip almost two years ago, which jumped me straight up from just shy of PS to WP. It was relatively expensive (self-funded), tiring and loooong (even though I enjoy flying), but absolutely worth it - I definitely got back more than I "spent" over the following ~18 months of being WP (I've re-qualified without another SC-run, but it would have been 18 months of WP if I hadn't).

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

Thanks for all the advice! After a JASA status run CBR-SYD-HBA-SYD-CBR next Tuesday and then another JASA CBR-MEL the following day (this was actually the cheapest flight to MEL on Anzac Day eve) both with DSC I will catapult myself from NB into SG territory very unassumingly. It was a stretch for me to even get to PS, but just another 400 SC thanks to the status run SG was just *that* achievable. Even my housemate who picks into me for being a QF fanboy and falling for capitalist markets was encouraging me to the status run to get to SG. She also commented that I could then take her as a guest into QP haha

Over next 14 months, I will travel to MEL a lot to see the bf and family. Plan a short trip to Asia later in 2012 and ATW trip in early 2013. Hope to make the most of SG then. Thanks AFF. Without you all I would never ever have done this.

My friends just call me a Qantas snob - and I'm proud of it!

Coming up with DSC...

Currently PS and then Anzac weekend...
