DJs new 737s, pretty impressive.

Just trying to clear up the false idea that "virgin has less legroom than qantas" which simply is not true.

I always thought it was the other way around, maybe its recently changed. But on the 'old' Virgin Blue aircraft with red/blue seats, it certainly feels to me as if Qantas 737 in Y has more legroom than Virgin.

But you can't deny the facts! Looks like on paper Virgin has more

Past row 3, these new aircraft become considerably less charming and cool. There's at least an inch of leg room missing compared to the older planes. Fine if you are a midget, but I wouldn't want to be approaching 6ft and sitting down the back. Has anyone else noticed this?

Quite the opposite!

A while ago, I posted that I thought there was more legroom in the new 800's......and far comfier seats! I also said I may be a bit allayed by the "opulence" of the BSI offering. I've only been on this plane once, so maybe I had stars in my eyes! Any way, I can't wait for more flights on these planes.............

On QF that'd be because it's the same repetitive programs on a coughpy CRT or drop down tiny LCD. Seriously the individual screens on the new 738s and on the 330s are bigger than the fold down screens with better viewing angle!

If you have a choice of progrmas, you'd definitely watch it more. Some pax love being able to make time pass watching tv - distract themselves. Individual on demand is an expected feature from a "premium" carrier. No IFE / paid IFE is equated to a LCC.

And one would hope that any new IFE would be 16:9 widescreen not 4:3 letterbox! I get sick of trying to guess what the missing text actually says :(

Interesting! As a midget myself I rarely notice legroom anyway which is why I thought it was significant that I felt there was less, although under the seat in front is more roomy due to no IFE boxes. I do agree that the seats are a lot softer and nicer though. I wasnt all that taken in by the lighting scheme to be honest. I had the pinkish sunset mood in the cabin on my flight, reminded me of the strange cast the sky gets right before a big storm. Re: IFE, to be honest I'm another who couldnt care about an IFE, my iPad is my entertainment of choice and it seems most of the other people onboard are pretty similar. It wouldnt surprise me if another 5yrs saw airlines ripping out IFE in favour if power points and WiFi to support all the elctronics pax bring with them.

And without reading the papers, I had a 737-700 OOL-SYD this morning......row 20 'cause my wife came along (red) and the seats were tight and upright.....this afternoon SYD-OOL we had a 737-800 (older), row 8, and the seats were noticably more reclined at upright and a greater pitch. So either the 700's are more uncomfortable than 800's or row 8 has better seating than row 20.......any comment from those gurus in the know?

On the oldest aircraft the seats are more 'relaxed' with age, the backs dont spring as far fwd as they one did. But I have no idea about the actual distance between seats.

No, still partial which I like, here is a different shot:

Well of course you would like it markis10 ;) ahem.

I have to agree with most, the partial divder between J and Y is a big fail - and the coloured plastic used is really a quite cheap and tacky look as well.

Hopefully they fix this up soon with the final layouts yet to be seen. And hurry up with the AVOD!

Was wondering, what would people think if an iPad was mounted to every seat back? Easy to fix if there are problems with the IFE, just remove a iPad replace it with another while it is being fixed. Plus the screens would be larger than most IFE screens, and much better picture quality.

Either way I hope the system is like Red...

That's Jetstar's plan isn't it?

Kind of, they will have a "set" of iPads available that can be paid for and handed to passengers by FAs. They are also given a mount so they can put it onto the seat in front.

I meant more a standard iPad on every seat mounted already.

According to this Virgin is indeed going to have a curtain as well as the current divider

Personally, I didn't see a problem with the screens.......but maybe if I flew J I might have ;)

On another note, I was on a ROK-BNE leg on Thursday evening with an all white E190. They told me it was 2 months old, but the inside looked the same as all the other E190s. No flash mood lighting (not Boeing I guess), no nice seats, still 3 rows of red PE seats and even had the Virgin Blue logo on the front bulkhead.

Are the E190s going to get anything other than a new coat of paint?

Hey swanning, this aircraft arrived before re-branding, so no paint, or new interiors, ZPR and ZPQ will be the first E190's painted, but the 737's will be done first. The E190's cabins will be re-done next year, after the 737's. All E190's will have new paint by the end of next year.

Sorry about the two posts in a row but this is a totally new topic!

Very interesting :D

That's good news I know a lot of people will be happier for this.

I'm a bit bemused why they are doing this so piecemeal though, its a bit risky even...

And why would you only put a partial divider in if you always intended to put in a full length curtain?? Cost savings??? Or just a honest miss by them - as is what seems to be indicated...

Bit bizarre... Will look a bit weird! But a def improvement.

I can assure you it is not a cost cutting measure

The 'partial' divide has a specific design purpose and is the direction airline designers are moving. An example is the new 787 which will have minimal divisions between cabins.

The reason they are moving in this direction is to make the cabins seam more spacious and light filled. 737's and other narrow body jets feel much bigger and spacious, and thus more comfortable with the "new style" dividers.

I think a curtain would not detract from it design purpose as it would only be drawn after boarding, thus the initial cabin impression remain the same. Also the almost see through purple divider remains so throughout the flight, but only reveals the ceiling, not the passengers.

No offence intended but do you work for Virgin? Because they would really be the only ones to answer that question in black and white.

Apologies if I've missed that you are a new Virgin rep :) I think a couple have popped up post crazydaves demise.

If not you can of course speculate, but if you are probably best to qualify that...!

PS Have also seen 787 designs with full cabin dividers and also new gen 737's with full cabin dividers. So although some may be looking at keeping them low and more 'airy' and 'one cabin' some are clearly not.

Second time today i have been asked that lol! The answer is no, even though I am more bias than a news limited company I am not a Virgin staff member.

Boeing's recommendation is to use less destructive barriers between cabins. They have gained this knowledge through substantial consumer psychological research, and airlines that don't follow these recommendations are simply making their own decisions.
The reason why such a "partial" divider is used is primarily to increase the spaciousness, and airiness of the cabin and to increase the quality of the consumer experience. The divider actually takes up the same amount of room as a old school 737 bulkhead and is the same thickness as the Qantas 737-800 bulkhead. Weight has nothing to do with it, more materials used because you can have a very thick bulkhead that weighs close to nothing if materials such as carbon fiber where to be used.

Back on topic: if I'm in J, I want the Y people out of sight and mind :) Don't care about the consumer psychology. Full cabin dividers for the win IMHO!!

If I'm in Y I don't want to see the J people reminding me that there is a better life haha.
