Double SC for all! (Book until midnight 6th Mar, Travel Mar 2017 - Feb 19, 2018)

Well I am now awfully closer to my account reset date, 31 May so I may need to push for them to credit the account for flights in May if it takes that long.

It doesn't work that way (unlike the loyalty bonus SC's apparently)

the DSC will apply to the membership year in which they were earned (ie the qualifying flights).. no matter when they post.

Before the offer I already had forward bookings to retain WP (one trip booked under DSC last year) and no chance of P1. I got no email. Yet a friend who already has bookings on standard status credits to get to Platinum got an email with the offer encouraging him to go for Platinum.

My email suggested I should go for WP. Currently SG but with 450sc in the bank, so technically havent requalified yet. But I have enough flights already booked to get me to WP so the email/promotion is a bit pointless.

More "Simple" I would think.

It is probably like:

IF CurrentMemberStatus == Bronze then Send Silver email
IF CurrentMemberStatus == Silver then send Gold email
IF CurrentMemberStatus == Gold then send Platinum email
IF CurrentMemberStatus == Platinum then Send P1 email
IF CurrentMemberStatus == PlatinumOne then JustDontBother

:D

My email simply said: "Reach new heights with double Status Credits" I guess they didn't want to say "aim for Platinum" in case I'd like to reach P1! I've been earning around 2500 SC each year which is in between WP and P1 maybe that explains it.

I also note those who have posted their emails (and when I've had one in the distant past) it was personalised to say a Silver member and showing a Gold card and saying something like "Get to Gold faster to enjoy the benefits" etc so the emails have, in the past anyway, been somewhat tailor made to the specific individual's status and situation (as you suggest).

Correct. Mine stated at the top of the body of the email "Watch your status soar to Gold". My anniversary was 28/2, so sitting on 0 SC's and no bookings in the system (thankfully LTS so soft landing every year). "Nudge nudge" from QF as they know my status history. Clever, as it made me book PER/SYD/BNE with them later this month that would have gone to VA (and probably sholud have with the issues I had). Won't change my status with them, but will edge me closer to LTG which is my goal.

Oh I agree.

It will post with effective date of the date flown, so even if they took 6 weeks + to post, it will affect your status in year flown (and adjust accordingly), plus your Lifetime SC counter.

This is the group where I don't understand QF's Marketing. But they don't know our drivers, so I guess they are prompting for overall increase in bookings. They don't know that you are both no chance for P1, that's a personal decision (that they are hoping to challenge)

Yes, which I am.

Yes. Mine was targeted to reach Platinum and anniversary date is 30 April. 2/3 way there but wasn't able to start flying until June. It worked.

QF's recent results announcement included comments about continued soft demand. That's what's driving this promotion.

I suspect should it continue they'll try like a triple points promotion

QF have also been reducing some capacity - at least domestically - which has helped their yield situation.

I suspect the prime marketing thought here has been "we want more revenue now and that means bookings"

I suspect if we see another bonus (eg: points) within the next few months we'll know how well it's gone :)

My goal of attaining WP for the first time with QF will also be realised, though I'm not exactly sure just how valuable that will turn out to be, but I'm working on the basis that I'll never know unless I try it!

its worth the experience. I found it makes a difference on overseas junkets where first class lounges are a step up.
Johnny Walker Blue on the buffet in London was just quite something. FLounges are great but when you take away the options to splurge (eg no domestic legs of international flights to RADELAIDE anymore) and you improve the earning rate for Gold members to 75% status bonus, it's an awful lot of extra coin to double up the flying with limited marginal benefits while you are DOING so.
I'm still in the mix of part business part leisure and funding teenagers travel so I booked up one trip in DSC. as much as I would liked to have splurged more, the spending plan didn't accommodate further desires. (Senior Junior capt flew business class with me over Christmas and junior Junior Capt is flying to Europe on a school trip this month.)

Has anyone worked out the minimum spend to achieve WP via a DSC like this starting at 0 SCs ? (And I don't mean other people's money)
looked to be around $6-7,00? Eg the Perth to NYC J or 3xNZ VIA Dog-leg flying

The PER-NOU route found by a TA some of us use (see what samh004 is doing) in J is 1260 for a little over $2k. WIth DSC you could pick up the remaining 140 pretty easily.

Less than that, 3 x MEL-SYD-CHC-BNE-MEL would have given you 1560 SC for $4,800. Some people have posted runs in the sub $3/SC (including the NOU trip a few posts back)

Qantas should just sell WP status for $5k/yr.

Looking at my Excel spreadsheet my annual average cost / SC is around $10-12 with outliers at $2.50 and $60/SC!!!I guess QF prefers the $60 SC :-)

That $60 per SC outlier would be for a domestic J flex?

No, it was a one-way transpacific ticket before "simpler & fairer" when all Y fare (except "Y" bucket) were earning the same number of SC.

Personally I have a bunch of challenges around how this promo is run. I booked a multi-sector US flight in J about 2 weeks ago and am bummed because it would really have racked up the SC's with this promo...I know there's always that great fare or promo like this you just miss out on but geez it would have been handy to know this was coming...

The only notification was on the website, which - y'know, having a job and a family and so on - I don't go onto each day just in case there's a good promo on. No email, even to those of us at the Platinum (I am P1, but only just fall over the line qualifying for it for the last two years) end of the spectrum that are their most frequent flyers and quite likely to want to take advantage of it. But I suspect like many of you my travel, especially long haul stuff I do between 6 and 8 times a year, is company-funded and takes a fair bit of organisation to make happen, teeing up calendars with colleagues or aligning around events you are going to travel to. I don't have the luxury of booking a J flight on a whim just because I have 4 or 5 days, including a weekend, to think up somewhere cool I'd like to go. I get that at any point in time there are people waiting to push the button on a planned flight and so a promo like this might get them to commit earlier than later. But presumably the object of such a promo is to try and generate business they might not otherwise have gotten?

Another challenge I have is with the timing...I'm in Perth, and so we had even less time (3 hours isn't a lot but it is if you're trying to get in contact with overseas or interstate colleagues to said aligning of plans) to get organised, and on top of that it was a public holiday long weekend here, which generated further complexity and effectively took a full day or trying to organise something away from me. All very much first world problems I know :), but still it feels a lot like a promo you kind of have when you're not really expecting it cost you (Qantas in this case) too much?

Interested to get others' feedback on how they far more effectively than me plan around this promo...Is it the same time every year? Are there other tell tale signs I should look out for that hint its coming up and I should hold off on that booking you know you are going to make sometime soon?

Cheers,
M

Zero sympathy from me. You were obviously content to book the flights two weeks ago - what has changed?

I had a bit of a book-a-thon over the weekend - 38 trips for approx $40,000 and 7000 SCs.
Not for me, but as the on-duty travel arranger I was everyone's new best friend for a while.

Closer to $3k for the 1260, and that includes positioning flights, which are probably the worst value :p

If I could do the NZ flying then I probably would choose it over the NOU trip, but then I've never been there (and my 1 hour there counts OK) ;)
