Re Crowding and such. One of JohnK's faves re the devaluing of status if every woman and her ESA can have Plat..

QF doesn't seem to mind too much given this is the 3rd year in a row with global DSC promotions, and endless ongoing +50% promos(targeted) and heck there were 2 DSC promos last year alone.

Clearly QF feels the revenue gained from sales with these promotions is enough to offset the cost of providing the status (and let's face it, most AFF folks have some form of elite status anyway and/or most use these promos to retain Gold or Plat that they probably would have gotten anyway because honestly the diehards doing status runs like us are in such a small minority that it's not even a blip. JoeBusinessPerson might see the promo and book an extra flight or not, but probably not care too much (which is what they're counting on).

My intrest is in the cost to QF of extra status not just in the lounge facilities cost, f&b, crowding etc, but what about partners (it costs QF $$$ every time a QF plat enters the CX F lounges, for example, under their QF Plat status - for example). All that cost would add up too, but clearly they feel it's OK.

I do agree re crowding which is why I avoid peak times, and have a 0700 flight coming up this morning where there will be few around :)

I honestly feel QF does these promos for short term gain but do not consider the longer term aspects, specially if every year they will provide more opportunities.. if suddenly one can get Gold or Plat for half the cost more or less, QF is actually missing out on a bit of revenue from those who might make the effort to retain if they did not have such promos.. but again the numbers of people who would actually do this would probably be few relative to the QF passenger base.

It would be interesting to know the actual numbers QF would project, or believe they have seen, actually up their status levels via DSC vs regular travel patterns by those same pax. Obviously confidential, but they wouldn't keep doing these proms if they felt they were losing on it.. Remember these promos are for THEIR benefit, not ours.. at least that's the theory :)

Not every time - as I understand it, within oneworld, it's the operating carrier that pays for lounge access, so the cost to QF would be minimal.

For those thinking of DSC and are new don’t forget that for every 500SC earned there is a bonus of 50SC.

Can be gotten up to 4 times a year.

However must be earned on these airlines:
QF,JQ,3K,GK,BL

SYD-JFK (QF11), LGA-DFW-SYD (QF4xx_x,QF8) for 1200SC not including the bonus for less than $8k in J. Note still have to complete 4 sectors in a QF group airlines

As i understood it any DOUBLE SC earned during this promo do not count towards being awarded those bonuses

Perhaps more correctly, any double SCs should replace the bolded quoted text above. At least that was my experience last year iirc. The normal SCs associated with these flights, still counted, unless my memory deceives me.

The bonus does not apply to any Promotion SC (whether DSC or any other SC obtained through a promotion - likely also captures SC from CC signups) but does to original (eligible) SC earned from actual flights

So if you get 500SC plus 500 from DSC, total harvest = 1050SC

DSC and bonus SC counts toward WP. But bonus SC does not count toward WP1

For the purposes of clarity here bonus SC = loyalty bonus status credits as described by the airline FF program

It doesn’t really matter what the rational behind the annual double status credit promo is. Frankly I think it is purely a grab for the post seasonal traveller, there are fundamentally 3 basic types of flyer1, the business flyer. Business flyers are aware of status becUse they spend a lot (too much?) of time in airports. Status gives them Lounge access and potentially the occasional “OpUp” business travellers have a choice between QF and VA , providing and edge is important to get a bigger chunk of their air travel spend. 2. The casual business / personal flyer who is essentially clueless and double status credits mean nothing, and any accumulated air points are often spent on toasters or left to fade away after 18 months of inactivity 3. The mad keen traveller, whether they are AFF types of just keen travellers , for them (us) squeezing every ounce of benefit from our relationship with an Airline / Alliance is important for many of the already stated reasons. I lump in here the Av Geeks and Plane spotters for whom air travel is their “raison d'être”. For us it is the thrill of the chase in many cases.
I have excluded the 4th type , because for many being a Governemnt funded flyer not all of the benefits accrue to them personally, yet I know there are plenty here who fall (partially) into this category, but are more savvy than the average Public service air traveller.

It would be interesting to how crowded the Business and First class lounge would get over the next 12 month as people take advantage of this promotion. Sydney business lounge is busting and overflowing and First class was also full the last time I was there.

Given there are other posts of Qantas allowing you to pay points if you fall short of qualification, a question then should be asked if you should do a status run to re-qualify or just to save some money and instead pay the points to re-qualify.

I am not saying it is a bad promotion, but this just triggers a lot of impulse buying which is to the benefit of Qantas.
I imagine the demise of JASA a couple of years ago reduced stock.

On the other hand not everyone in the world chases status like us AFF’ers. We are a weird mob.

DSC and bonus SC counts toward WP. But bonus SC does not count toward WP1

This is incorrect. Double SC do count towards WP1, QF hasn’t yet “enhanced” this although I expect them to do so any time.
Bonus/ DSC do not count towards the 2400 PG benefit or the Bonus points at 5000 and 7500 SC earned.

EDITED to change the word Bonus to Double

Thanks for the info re the 2400 PG benefit as I was feeling guilty as MrP moves to 2400 credits that I’d robbed a son of SG gift by choosing the points instead last time.

Interestingly
QF11+QF4xx_+QF8
Will get 1200SC without loyalty bonus during DSC promotion.
I can see 2x these trips this year which are ATO compatible. Is there a reason for a 3rd I ask myself.:p:p:p

Is that in fully flexible J?

So called up QF, they gave contradictory advice (also after going away for 5 minutes)

They said to buy voucher excluding the infant in the passenger count and then call up to add the infant after booking (or alternatively book via CC and they will add infant)

I suppose it depends if adding an infant to an existing booking creates a PNR change?
Yes I asked them again and got this advice too. If the infant isn't occupying a seat, then leave them off and add them later

I couldn’t get a run to LHR and back to work based on cost. SQ is at $5900 versus QF at around $9,000 in J.
We are already booked to LAX or NYC 3 times this year and that seems to be the only run that works for us.

To be clear, unlike last year's promotion, the T&C's state any Bonus SC's earned will not count toward the up to 4 x 8Kpoint or 50SC that can be earned every year

Sadly QF IT systems don't apply their own terms, as status credits earned on JQ or 3K are not counting towards the loyalty bonus, as seen when logging in to QFF. When it will be fixed, nobody knows...
