EK upgrade "Love" on QF / EK coded flights - success rate?

re: EK upgrade "Love" on QF / EK coded flights - success rate?

The upgrades are usually an operational move to deal with overselling in the Y cabin rather than to directly reward status. The trans-Tasman flights are not usually very heavily sold and EK rarely need to op-up. Lots of discussion over on FT EK board about how EK decide how to allocate op-ups (including some debate about whether the first letter of your suname is important)!

Clearly not unless they start at the bottom. ;)

I agree it's based on Y load. Which is why Adelaide is a good base as the international flights are scarce and Emirates is the only "Q" flight available.

EK very often give op-ups to QFF elites. It's not uncommon to get an upgrade and occasionally even a double upgrade. I've certainly never received free upgrades with QF which is why I now try to book QF-coded EK flights where there is a choice.

I'm another who has received the 'EK upgrade love" & I too hunt down QF coded flights on EK metal due to a better chance of receiving an op-up.
I've even been made to feel like a virtual 'king'
whilst travelling on EK on another trip with the only Y Passenger having a shadow & the Purser constantly approaching me to see if everything was ok.
The downside was Some dirty eyes looking my way during the flight from fellow passengers :)

I have been op-up on EK (as QF ticket) once Discount Y BKK->SYD (double - one for me and one for mini-colster... but not one for mrs C or min C 2 much to their dismay). AKL->SYD last week was treated like royalty in Y, with a shadow in 43H (which is a fantastic seat BTW)... Had no less than three separate FAs and the CSM ask me if they could do anything for me as specific trips, rather than just during service etc... I would jump to EK if they status matched me in heart beat considering their hard and soft product on the 380s and their overall positive attitude towards customers.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Anybody with experience on paid upgrades (apart from me and the example above where one was refused) when having a QF ticket? Just curious if the feedback from EK staff in DXB is the norm and/or if EK staff in other countries are a bit more relaxed - thinking of future trips for 3 where op-up for the 3 of us would be unlikely, but I'd be happy to pay a few hundred $ instead of a few thousand $ more ...

Was offered a paid upgrade at the check-in counter at LED for the LED>DXB leg (on a QF ticket). Tried to get a paid upgrade on DXB>SYD in DXB, but the queue was too long at the ticketing counter. However, I found out that paid upgrades can be requested when already on the plane from the EK crew - but I was unlucky as business cabin was full on that flight.

re: EK upgrade "Love" on QF / EK coded flights - success rate?

I have been bumped up from J to F twice flying SYD-BKK (although the return leg was booked in F both times so maybe that helped?).
Also, Emirates offers chauffeur drive on the Asia routes.

re: EK upgrade "Love" on QF / EK coded flights - success rate?

Had my first ever Op Up last night, Booked in J on QF8422 Operated: EK422 DXB-PER. Flight was 100% full and was bumped up at the gate. Had swapped seats with other people i was traveling with in the lounge about an hr before so was pretty happy when my boarding pass was torn up and seen the magic 'First' boarding pass come back at me!

Very happy, having tried J on the A380 a couple of days earlier and F with EK now, great airline!

If it makes you feel any better, I flew DXB/SIN yesterday and had the same response as you did when making an enquiry to pay for an upgrade - they told me because it was an 081 ticket, there was nothing they could do at the Connections Desk, which is where I was sent by ground staff. As I turned away, a girl serving at the adjacent counter told me to check at the gate, which I did and whilst they did check to see if there was availability (and seemed more keen to assist), I was told J was fully booked and so there was no chance of an upgrade.

Feeling the Emirates Love!!!

Booked QF tickets to Europe from PER and did a side trip from DXB to MAA. Got exit row seats on all sectors. Got upgraded to J at check- in from MAA to DXB, it was a 3.5 hr flight so did not make a big difference. However, after our 6 weeks travel and on the return leg from DXB to PER both of us got upgraded to J at the gate. This was our first long haul J experience and jeez what a difference it made. love Emirates now!!

Re: Feeling the Emirates Love!!!

Upgraded in the Emirates Lounge last night travelling on QF codeshare MEL-DXB-FRA. Second leg also upgraded! Thankyou EK, I'd nearly forgotten how good your A380 J is. This was from a QF sale fare, and I'm pretty sure Emirates did not have my EK Silver (ex-Gold) membership linked to this flight.

That's just fantastic! And I agree, the A380 J class is very good, I wouldn't bother with the 777 but A380 is great

I flew PER DXB PER and got no love. It was booked as EK despite me requesting the person that booked it to do it through QF. Zero recognition from hosties, but service is far superior than on QF metal. My express immigration card was given to my mate sitting next to me, who is a NB. All up the superior service made me feel much better, than having a CSO acknowledging you, then putting up with the usual poor, or should I say, hit and miss, Usual QF service. I think QF could learn a lot from EK.

Another upgrade to F today. Had checked in for the flights (QF Ticket, QF coded flights) in CBR. Wandered over to the MEL EK lounge a while after they opened. Asked if the flight was busy.

"Mr SQ421, I'm sorry I need to reissue your boarding pass on Emirates Stock"

(I'm starting to grin at this moment)

"I hope 1A is OK" :big grin on the lounge angel's face:

Why yes, yes it is!

3/7 for J-F OpUps on EK. And for the first time, the upgrade is on a sector where it isn't too short, or I'm not at the tail end of a stupid cough trip where all I want to do is sleep!

Should be a fun 7 hours to SIN. Here's hoping for really strong headwinds.

Do you think you would have received the upgrade if you'd gone into Q lounge instead?

Do you think you would have received the upgrade if you'd gone into Q lounge instead?

I was in the Q lounge form about 1100 onwards.

The EK Lounge doesn't open till 1530, which is when I went to that lounge to ask if the flight was full (I already knew from EF Seatmap that it was close to full if not oversold).

Whether I would have received the upgrade if I'd gone directly to the gate? I like to think so, given, in the process of reissuing the BP, the lounge angel didn't seem to type anything into her computer. Leads me to think the upgrade had already been processed and was just a matter of my existing boarding pass being presented so it can be swapped over for a new one.

Also got a chance to take a peek at the windows tablets they are using onboard EK flights to record pax information. Interesting bit of a kit. That is also how I found out there was only 1 EK Platinum on board EK405 today.

And by today, I mean yesterday. Friday. I still haven't gone to bed so its the same "day" :P

That makes sense. We were in Emirates lounge in Dubai but even though we had to present BP to enter, it wasn't until we went to board we received the upgrade.

How would points and SCs post when you pay on the plane to upgrade?

Re: EK upgrade love

Can anyone advise if it is EK regular practice to block seats 1A and 2A in the F cabin? It seems that those seats are blocked for the 2 flights we are on and I wondered if it might be a potential upgrade indicator. Routing is SYD-AKL-BNE

Thanks in advance.
