EK upgrade "Love" on QF / EK coded flights - success rate?

Re: EK upgrade love

EK were nice enough to upgrade me from Y to J on BKK-DXB and DXB-ARN. I got the upgrades at the gate. These two were my first flights on EK since becoming QF WP.

In contrast, I've had 4 QF flights since becoming WP, all in Y, and all I've received is 2 greetings, not even one shadow.

I was very impressed with the DXB F lounge/s. Spacious, good facilities, excellent service. I also visited the QF SYD F lounge for the first time on the same itinerary and it was so busy people couldn't find seats and I had to queue up at the counter just to place a food order.

I certainly know what my preferred airline is from now on.

QF codeshares flying on EK Metal are certainly very enticing!

Re: EK upgrade love

Have a friend who is Silver with QF, just had his second op-up with Emirates this year. First was DXB-FRA (Y->J), second was MEL-DXB, from Y to F!

Had half a dozen flights with EK and no upgrade love for me as a WP :(

Re: EK upgrade love

Are people booking these fares via the Qantas or Emirates websites? Did they end up equalising fares between the two sites?

Re: EK upgrade love

Going back a few posts by reload on expertflyer, it helps but is never accurate to go by 100%.

I have seen EK flights go with zero availability on expertflyer only to have full stock open up 2 days later (full stock is 9 seats per fare class in Y)

The best guide is to look at the seat maps 48 hours onwards, and then 24 hours etc, as it seems their systems they preselected seats for everyone not already seated including exit rows 48 hours out of a flight and then staff go in and move people around and fully seat everyone, with around 12 hours out you can have a good look how things are, but is never 100% of how things are, but if less than 30 seats in Y are left unoccupied you are generally in for op ups.

Re: EK upgrade love

Another opup from J > F on QF8404 yesterday. I'm now at 2 op ups out of 6 flights on EK metal (all Qantas coded) this year.

Re: EK upgrade love

Opup on BKK-DXB and DXB-LHR legs as QF Gold.

Flights oversold, checked in online and arrived 2hrs early to request exit seats. Said full flight and could not help. Asked again at lounge and they said they could only do DXB-LHR and I'd get a new pass at the gate.

I saw about 6 people get op-uped on DXB-LHR leg, there may have been more.

Sounds like your having a better flight than your trip last year by the sounds of things!

What did you think of EK J ( hard & soft product) if you don't mind me asking?

Ground soft product is terrible, give me QF any day. In air, they're pretty good. Having said that, codeshares a probably slightly preferable with status with outside chance of upgrade vs .05% chance on Qantas, but no seat selection benefits for status on EK.

777 Business felt like the product on AA domestic. Wasn't particularly impressed but obviously better than Y. I wouldn't pay for it.

380 is nice, seats are much better than 777; but I preferred it mostly because of the bar. The bar is such a great idea but was a bit underutilised. Allowing Plats/Golds up from PE/economy to something like this would be a major differentiator if marketed as 'Qantas club in the sky'. Good way to pass time, stretch your legs on long routes.

Are there any kits you can get for Y to give you a mattress cover type thing like business? as in BYO. I might start looking into this.

Also, EK Lounge in Terminal B in Dubai is pretty awful. Only a couple of non-bathroom showers with very long queues. Rest of lounge is rundown. Stark contrast to the nice one in Terminal A.

Thanks for your insights QPProletarian !

I can relate to much of your observations of EK v QF.

Whilst never been to Terminal B EK lounge, in my earlier days of having no status with EK/QF when travelling through that terminal Is , All I do remember is people sleeping all over the place ( literally on all the seats around travelators & departure gates)..... It's a very busy terminal, that's for sure.

Enjoy your travels & hopefully we'll see you at a Melbourne Social event when your next in town.

777 business like AA domestic? what sort of 777 was it?

Re: EK upgrade love

No upgrade love for me, Frankfurt to Dubai, but I asked for and was given an exit row seat, yay, leg room! The flight was completely full.

Still hoping for some Q upgrade love on qf10, don't hold any hopes though, (only joking!).

That would be the AA NGBC seats - angled flat with a slight slope. (Still not sure there's much correlation other then 2x3x2)

Re: EK upgrade love

3rd op-up (Y-J) from 8 flights this year on EK metal- DXB-SYD on a 380. Such an amazing product EK have here

Have they convinced you to ditch QFF and move to Skywards?

Re: EK upgrade love

Have they convinced you to ditch QFF and move to Skywards?

Not entirely. I suspect most of the people getting op-ups is to entice them to actually move.
Real shame that Emirates doesn't do direct flights to the US/Asia from here, otherwise they would probably have my vote. Their service(!!!) and products are vastly superior to Qantas

I know there's a separate forum for this, but has anyone here managed to have their status matched on Skywards?

Hence my question.

EK has numerous options connecting MEL/SYD to KUL/BKK/SIN. If they were allowed to fly to USA direct, they probably would.

And yes there have been some reports of success with regards to status matching to Skywards.
