EK upgrade "Love" on QF / EK coded flights - success rate?

Re: EK upgrade love

I'm confused why QF doesn't upgrade more often. The most profitable airlines in the world make sure their top tier frequent flyers receive upgrades where possible....after all they're the ones in the top 5% of customers

I agree. Apparently the theory is it cheapens premium cabins.

Buying miles cheaply doesn't cheapen premium cabins.

Re: EK upgrade love

Just completed my first Emirates Return Trip DXB-AMS booked with Qantas Points. Flight to Amsterdam was booked in F however return was booked in J but received an upgrade at the gate to F. So first ever flight on Emirates where I could get an upgrade I did - slightly bizarre.

The F Cabin on the 380 only had four other passengers, so it wasn't just to fill the F cabin.

Only time I have been slightly indifferent about an upgrade, as I was looking forward to testing the 380 J product, however after my third glass of Dom and second helping of caviar I decided they'd be other opportunities to try J!

Re: EK upgrade love

Data point:

Ive flown EK quite a bit of late and never received an upgrade, lots of special welcomes etc (all flying in J)

Ive got a half a dozen EK flights in the next month, so perhaps my luck will change. ;)

Re: EK upgrade love

I've had no joy with any EK upgrades, however have a stack of flights coming up this year, so fingers crossed. A few flights in F would be sweet ;)

Ok so here goes im booked in disc J on the QF codeshares on the following flights this week and next Ill paste in availability on the flights and we will see how i go :)

11 APR QF35 MEL/SIN (Im already in J so whatever)

11 APR EK355 SIN/DXB (in Disc J)

F/0 A/0

J/0 C/0 I/0 O/0 P/0

Y/0 E/0 R/0 W/0 M/0 B/0 U/0 K/0 H/0 Q/0 L/0 T/0 V/0 X/0

The flight looks oversold to me in all classes so id say I have no chance.

12 APR EK 59 DXB/HAM (in Disc J)

F/2 A/2

J/0 C/0 I/0 O/0 P/0

Y/7 E/7 R/7 W/7 M/7 B/7 U/7 K/7 H/7 Q/7 L/7 T/7 V/0 X/0
There is some F available and J looks full, so maybe a slim chance?

16 APR CPH/DXB (2 class aircraft, so J is J.)
17 APR DXB/SIN EK354 (in Disc J)

F/2 A/2

J/4 C/4 I/4 O/7 P/2

Y/7 E/7 R/7 W/7 M/7 B/7 U/7 K/7 H/7 Q/7 L/7 T/7 V/7 X/7

There seems to be some availability on this flight, so perhaps this is a chance.
17 APR SIN/MEL EK404 (in Disc J)

F/2 A/2

J/4 C/4 I/4 O/7 P/2

Y/0 E/0 R/0 W/0 M/0 B/0 U/0 K/0 H/0 Q/0 L/0 T/0 V/0 X/0
whilst there are only 2 F seats left on this flight the oversold Y makes this one feel like the best chance of the lot.

So overall im still upgradeless on EK, ill see how the next week pans out. Wish me luck ;)

Re: EK upgrade love

Best I check in from DBX following my upgrade to business class on my flight from Adelaide, thank you so much Emirates, most agreeable.:) I could get very used to this. :)

Also thanks to those on this forum that showed me how to do it.

Re: EK upgrade love

Flight to Frankfurt was chockers (777-200), I counted only 3 spare seats in economy and one was next to me in the exit row, thanks again Emirates, don't think I'll botherflying QF metal again for international!

Re: EK upgrade love

April 5 BKK to SYD on QF ticket but flying EK metal upgraded from Y to J (QF WP no status on EK)

You know for every success on this thread there's a ek gold/platinum member complaining somewhere about lack of upgrades!

At least 6 of us got upgrades on the Adelaide to Dubai flight, J class was still about 1/3 to 1/2 empty. On my QFF activity statement it was noted that I had been upgraded.

Just to clarify, next time I go to an overseas destination where it is actually possible to fly QF metal (very limited, I know), I doubt I'll choose that option.:)

Re: EK upgrade love

Upgraded from Y to J from DXB-DUB the other day. Flight was oversold by 11 in Y and the check-in agent said to expect an upgrade at the gate (2 EK plats and 3 EK golds ahead of me) - the man wasn't wrong!

50% upgrade rate on EK, 0.001% upgrade rate on QF :P

Re: EK upgrade love

Just been paged at the EK lounge in MEL and upgraded to First class on a cheap business ticket (S$2,500 return ex-SIN)! Feel underdressed in a sleeveless top...

Uber exciting. Enjoy First Class!

EK Love is still going strong as ever by the looks of things.:)

Taking this flight on Sunday; I guess they key is to move to the EK lounge closer to departure than remain in the QF F Lounge!

Re: EK upgrade love

I'll never understand this mentality of if there are empty seats then people should be upgraded for free?

I completely understand it. If you're running a business and you want people to feel good about your business and continue to choose it over (very good) competitors, offering them something they didn't necessarily pay for once in a while is a good move. With all these reports of under filled J and F cabins on QF, what are the downsides to them providing more upgrades? Especially if they told passengers catering wasn't guaranteed - I'd still take a J seat long haul any day over a Y even if it meant no meal (which is unlikely to occur anyway). The flight is already operating anyway, and having spare J and F seats is like having assets which can be given away at minimal extra cost to the airline - thus helping to build the kind of goodwill that is clearly eluding Qantas at this time.

Just look at the responses on this entire thread - people saying they will now choose to fly EK because of the hit rate of upgrades. If QF did the same maybe they'd be clawing back some of those losses of revenue and loyalty.

Re: EK upgrade love

I got upgraded from DXB-CDG on a KUL-DXB-CDG last year.

Was great on the 777 although I preferred the company of people my age (25) in Y compared with lots of old French men in J haha.

J cabin was full. F only had 1 person in it. Was a nice start to the trip. Im only SG in QFF.

Took EK F on the way back, had to say that one FA was terrible and very ice princess like, but the others were fantastic.
