EK upgrade "Love" on QF / EK coded flights - success rate?

Re: EK upgrade love

Yes I understand everyone thank you!

Having said that, just so I understand, in the instance of an over booked flight would an economy seat pax with status get op-up before a business class without status?
Assuming J->F to make room for overbooked Y.

I am not an expert but speaking as one who flys internationally a bit an op-up (ie not points based) is pretty rare. Things that would make it rarer are a classic award fare and low status. The best advice repeated over and over here is to be happy with what you have initially booked. :)

hope that helps and enjoy your flight

Re: EK upgrade love

I am EXTREMELY happy with the tickets I booked :-) was just curious how that would work because as has been mentioned the nature of my ticket and status I would have thought would put me below someone in economyn with status in the "pecking order" list.

Fare buckets dont really come into it, if a plane is oversold in Y it will be frequent flyers in J go to F, and same for Y to J, where the fare basis will play a part is if there are a few of equal status but only one seat needing to be upgraded. An example of this happened to me recently on a very full flight with EY, I got the last upgrade as I was on a B fare ahead of other gold members.

Re: EK upgrade love

So last week I did the following on a full Y fare
SYD-DXB on QF1 (used points to upgrade to Premium Economy)
DXB-PRG on EK139- got upgraded to Business at no cost (2nd time in 3 Emirates flights- I've only ever taken a total of 3 flights!!)
PRG-LHR on BA- nothing special
LHR-DXB on QF2- standard economy seat
DXB-SYD on EK412

So I asked if I could pay for an upgrade on EK 412 and they said I was due to get another complimentary upgrade, however they had oversold business, so they couldn't offer it. They apologised for it too! The QF2 flight was almost empty in J and PE!

I don't understand- an airline that I don't have status with has given me an upgrade on 2 flights and was almost give one on a 3rd and I've only ever flown them 4 times, yet Qantas has NEVER given me an op-up even when seats are empty!!!!!

Really tempted to just move to Skywards and forget QFF now

Re: EK upgrade love

So let me understand. You bought Y (plus used points upgrade on 1 leg) and travelled what you pay for paid for on QF/BA. They had no need to give away an upgrade because they weren't oversold. Yet EK were simply oversold in Y and they upgraded you (and probably other EK tiered customers ). EK don't upgrade people without a need ,if you think they are a charity & a move to Skywards will open up endless recognition and the same ongoing upgrades..good luck there will be ups and downs in that decision especially if you travel domestically, via seat select/lounge access if not connecting etc. Joe Hockey is right..this age of entitlement needs to end

Emirates could be like AA in that they upgrade high tier members if there are vacant seats in premium cabins.

Not quite. I got upgraded from PRG to DXB, which had a few empty seats.

I'm not complaining about getting upgraded. In fact I know I've been extremely lucky. It just surprises me that EK would do it for someone with no status with them, yet Qantas doesn't all that often

you have status with EK, it's a partnership including the frequent flyer status

Re: EK upgrade love

All this EK love makes me think I should give them a go now. My chances of an op-up could be pretty good! ;)

Re: EK upgrade love

Will be doing 4 EK flights in J with Mrs lime, now if there is only one op-up on offer guess I'll have to take it :)

Re: EK upgrade love

It seems it might be a tactic to get some love from QFFs.. a WP mate of mine was heading with his girlfriend and two more friends (all NB) BNE-AKL over christmas on EK and they upgraded them ALL to J! I know availability is plentiful on that route, and its only a short flight.. but damn, you wont complain!

Re: EK upgrade love

I travelled from BKK to SYD on Saturday on QF8418/EK418 and out of the four of us, two got upgrades to J. Master Colster (aged 8) and myself enjoyed the flight very much. Mrs Colster and mini coaster (aged 6) not so much in whY... She really really hates it when I get the love and she doesn't.

Re: EK upgrade love

What gives me the irrits is when J and F seem to have heaps of empty seats and there are no comp op ups :-) - Whinge I know (you pay the fare to get the seat)... My flight to HKG tomorrow looks like the below. At least am in PE

Re: EK upgrade love

I'll never understand this mentality of if there are empty seats then people should be upgraded for free?

Both Qantas and Ansett used to do this - back in the mid 90's I used to regurlarly travel Y (as in fare bucket, not just 'economy').

Every third flight (on average) I would be upgraded to Business class. (Even from economy cabins that were not full.)

Comparing notes with associates, it seems that was normal.

I did not know how to refer to them until Qantas sent me (and associates) a letter in the latter part of that decade stating they were discontinuing the practice of providing "Courtesy" upgrades.

Re: EK upgrade love

It used to be the case with checkin with people rather than online that the checkin staff seemed to upgrade more often than you get through a computer, at least domestically.

That's nice in the 1990s. But in this day and age I don't understand why people feel they should be getting upgraded when there is no reason to do so. Airlines who do this continually are devaluing the premium cabins. If the cabin is oversold then definitely upgrade elites and make them feel good.

Re: EK upgrade love

I'm confused why QF doesn't upgrade more often. The most profitable airlines in the world make sure their top tier frequent flyers receive upgrades where possible....after all they're the ones in the top 5% of customers

Whilst I am not one to expect an upgrade, I agree with you. It would only need to be one or two pax per flight for the word to get out which would help stop the drift away from QF.

Incidentally I have flown with EK three times in Y and I have had a personal welcome each time, there have been no upgrades. Which seems to be at odds with the "QF WPs get 2 upgrades" pattern. Again, I am happy to fly in the seat I bought - just sayin'.

In QF's case - it's QF international thats bleeding cash - and this is where you'd want the upgrade as a status pax. It's not too hard to have a rule where the passenger gets an upgrade say 1 in 10 flights or for every $25k you generate for the group (flights/cc/points earning and so on). Most people I talk to say the problem with QF is inconsistency and if they were to implement something like this it would instantly mitigate that problem among FF'ers!

From the stats I've seen - EK Gold and Plat members have a higher upgrade% rate than their equivalent on QF international flights.
