Well, today was when the trial was meant to go live in PER, right?

Had no new card in the mail yesterday. I had no immediate need for it, however, but I'd hope that for QF's sake that at least some people got the cards in PER (even if it so happens to be no one who is a member of this forum).

Had another thought and a fairly new thread gave me the idea, but with the new baggage injectors, since they will use lasers and a weightometer (or other weighing mechanism), this basically eliminates all forms of discretion unless you use Premium Check-in. That is, if you put a bag into the injector which is 1 kg overweight (i.e. beyond your allowance), you'll be instantly rejected.

Whilst most of us on this forum are desensitised to being subjected to varying degrees of the strictness of enforcing these rules (from Draconian to "Couldn't Give Two Bits"), there are going to be some much aggreived pax who will see red (perhaps literally) when their luggage which is "merely 1 kg overweight" is rejected by the injector.

Nothing arrived in my PO Box today either, so still no card..... maybe it was prioritised based on forward bookings as to when you'd be flying out of PER?

Just because the trial was meant to start today does not mean anyone was actually expected to use the facility ;), at least they can claim they have had no rejections or problems with it so far

First day voodoo / heebie jeebies?

a la HKG Chep Lap Kok, LHR T5, etc.

The new card arrived today - I'm in the Sydney metro area. Trip to Perth & return is in J on 8- 10 September.

It is exactly like the old WP card, except for the silver "q chip" in the upper right corner.

Unfortunately "the valid until" date is exactly the same as my old card as well. :(

Got mine! Leaving saturday, will come back via perth in a week.

Also, just to clarify ; by "old card" he means the new one, in that it's of the new barcode type without embossed writing

Nothing in my PO Box this morning. Hopefully it arrives before I fly out tomorrow morning :)

Well I fly out of PER Saturday afternoon and mrs ejb reports nothing yet at home in SYD.:(

If it arrives tomorrow I can still get it but it looks like I will be waiting 3 weeks to try the new system.

Next Generation Check-In Arrives In Perth 29 July 2010

Qantas today launched a trial of its all-new Next Generation Check-in system at its domestic terminal at Perth Airport.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Joyce, said Next Generation Check-in would dramatically reduce check-in times, and eliminate queues for customers, allowing them to move through the check-in area with speed and ease.

“This is a truly ground-breaking Qantas innovation,” Mr Joyce said.

“A group of approximately 100,000 Qantas Frequent Flyers who regularly travel through Perth have been invited to take part in the Next Generation Check-in trial.

“The majority of these customers will have received their new Qantas Frequent Flyer Card embedded with “intelligent Q” chip technology.

“With one touch of their Frequent Flyer Card on our new Q Card Readers, passengers will now be checked in within seconds. The new card will also act as a permanent boarding pass.”

A priority security lane has also opened in Perth featuring improved preparation areas and new walkthrough equipment to support faster processing through the screening area.

Mr Joyce said all passengers travelling through Qantas’ Perth domestic terminal would benefit from the airline’s new self check-in kiosks and automatic bag drop facilities.

“Next Generation Check-in will provide a new level of service to our customers with Customer Service Agents coming out from behind their desks and circulating throughout the terminal to assist customers,” Mr Joyce said.

“Perth is a very important market for Qantas and the recent $75 million upgrade of our domestic terminal made it the perfect choice to launch this trial phase of the project.”

Throughout the Perth trial, construction and training will continue in Sydney, which will be ready to launch Next Generation Check-in later in 2010, followed by Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra in 2011. The program is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2011.

I'd like to know their definition of regular is! i've not been back since December last year. and although i had booked a KGI trip i was only ever transiting in PER. Unless they now about an upcoming work trip before I do!
