This is the perfect attitude in this situation. And trust me you won't be disappointed with a visit to Burma, a great place.

I wish I had been in on this just cause I love the gamble of it with not much to lose, adds a bit of excitement to travels and life!

oh dear, guess people didnt check visa requirements first?

Re: [fare gone] Yangon to New York, London etc. R/T in C < $800

Everyone wasting their time, Silk/SIA are not going to wear the cost nor honor the flights, all ticket holders will be contacted , the funds be returned, - can contact DOT who every , it's all under old hague convention rules, when with online sale. what is the old sayings" if it's looks too good be true, then it's not true" + "buyer be ware" ...
This is pure speculation, SIA have previously stated (in relation to a similar situation) that their policy is to honour regardless of the size of the mistake.

I have myself been the benificiary of this policy where a discount code that was supposed to only be applied once (Krisflyer) was applied for all 4 passengers. Unfortunately one name was miss-spelt. In my discussion with SIA a couple of options arose, including one which was to cancel and reissue. In this case I would have lost this benefit and to paraphrase the CSR, "we want to and it is our policy to honour mistakes like this. "

SQs policy to honor such mistakes was confirmed by the wall street journal:

Re: [fare gone] Yangon to New York, London etc. R/T in C < $800

I've learned there's a visa issue.

Myanmar does not have multiple entry visas. The Embassy in Canberra issues only 28 day, single entry visas. (The cost is $35 and you cannot apply greater than three months before travel.)

Return travel out of Yangon will obviously require two 'visits' to Myanmar. As far as I can tell, this requires visiting a Myanmar Embassy at your destination to get a second single entry visa, before returning to Yangon.

I'm seeking advice as to any other options.
Think this depends on your situation, the embassy would issue 2 single entry visa's as long as your total trip is < 3 months.

Visa's can be got in 24 hours in Bangkok (you do need to get there early as they only do a set no. a day). And finally Visa On arrival has reputedly been reinstated, check on Tripadvisor

If that's true then it's wonderful news. I missed out on this deal, but I have been thinking I'd love to visit Myanmar and have a look around, and obviously visa on arrival makes it that much easier. Also, it'll hopefully stimulate tourism and provide a more welcoming and open environment for foreigners. :)

Re: [fare gone] Yangon to New York, London etc. R/T in C < $800

Hey guys !

Just a few word and experience regarding this. I was blind and also travelling since end of March so I did not check AFF but thankfully got this info from a friend of mine and was able to get in.

I booked two tickets, one to LAX coming month on KE in F and the other one to Montreal with LX in C (upgraded to F with LX E-voucher), return in on AC and a QF codeshare op by BA.

The Swiss ticket I flew yesterday, in fact I just checked into my hotel. Everything went smooth and no problems whatsoever (so far).

A) I booked a bmi award to RGN and did an immediate turnaround. The staff was a bit confused and believe me I was sweating and praying they did not go into the cupon and check the details (assuming the $$ that go to TG are not really worth anything more than toilet paper). Big relief when the doors closed.

-> Online Check-In for RGN worked however it did NOT print a bp

B) I got my Visa at the Consulate in Hong Kong, 150 HKD and pick up the following day at 2pm. Same Day pick up is not possible. NOt sure if by now the e-visa thing works, last week it did not work yet and the reply email said beginning May. Anyhow, visa process was fast and easy. Consulate is in Wan Chai right behind the Ferry Pier.

-> In RGN the TG Staff whisked me right into the departure hall so I did not have to go through Immigration, hence my Visa did not get invalidated. Good thing, so I can use it again next month providing KE is not cancelling my ticket with the frenzy going on now on FT...

-> You WILL NEED a visa, otherwise TG or whatever airline you use to go to RGN will not check you in.

C) Ticketing via Opodo UK, I tried various other channels but I used both my Virgin Visa and HSBC Premier Mastercard with Australian Address. I had to go through a very annoying Verification Process (incl Opodo once for the Virgin Visa) and except opodo all other providers refused to issue the ticket outright, claiming they can't verify CC. In how far that's bogus or genuine I can't say but UK seems to have weird mechanisms in place. Then again, booking on a UK website, Ticket ex RGN, IP Address from China and CC from Australia is probably crying out loud 'FRAUD'.

-> Comments in the booking... I booked one early like 9 days ago and tuesday last week there were comments from LX already in my reservation record that someone tried to call me bla bla... I took that as not a good sign, cancelled the res and booked a new one on friday for departure on sunday. Not much time for the airline to react. Not sure if ticket one would have worked or created trouble down the road. I think my current strategy paid off ok so far.

I personally do not believe much in tickets booked much ahead of time will be honored, especially not by KE or CI. Book now, fly now would be my credo for this situation.

Cheers
S

The FT thread is now reporting a host of cancellations.

The FT thread is now reporting a host of cancellations.

Not for those that booked using this thread info though, its bookings through another airlines stock or agent that are being cancelled. I am not sure three or four is a host either, and its bookings that are only hours old, not weeks.

I think this might be right on the money. from reading FT, someone was already successful in using the flights, but they booked and flew almost immediately. it seems other bookings being made in this current round are being scrutinised and may be cancelled.

hopefully this might mean that the earlier round goes unnoticed... at least for a while.

there is also a distinct difference between a booking with SQ segments only vs a booking with multiple airlines. with an sq only they are not going to be out of pockets thousands of dollars when the other airlines come to claim for their portion of the ticket.

just on the sq policy of honouring mistake fares... I was having a discussion with some colleagues last night... we came to the conclusion that it is probably non-binding. the promise to honour was in a US context, where the dot has some pull. but that aside, to rely on the promise you would have to argue that it was an implied condition of the contract to ticket. this would be on shaky ground.

It seeme like some other airlines/3rd party travel agents have made very cheap fares from RGN available.

I believe this is something to do with Burma changing its currency recently - I don't think some airlines (eg SQ a few weeks ago) calculated the new currency properly hence it being so damn cheap!

Could be right - it was a significant change in value.

Re: [fare gone] Yangon to New York, London etc. R/T in C < $800

bt-store.com is currently showing cheap J flights on various carriers to USA destinations - I just tried RGN-JFK return in Dec 2012 and total J return is $900US on Thai and Delta!!

I think there is a high chance these 3rd party fares will be cancelled but if you want to give it a shot book ASAP!! This has been up on Flyertalk for less than 12 hours - Im guessing it will be shut down by lunch!

If you book far enough our you have little to lose if they cancel them in a few months time.

As I said above, I am fairly certainly this is a mistaken currency conversion because of the new Burmese currency - ensure you get your fare in and pay in USD!!

unfortunately it's also been advertised by a (relatively) junior FTer on their travel blog... under the caption of '$300 business class fares to the USA'. not helping matters another (junior) FTer was looking for certainty they would be allowed to travel so rang the online booking agency to query the fare :-|

sigh.

Re: [fare gone] Yangon to New York, London etc. R/T in C < $800

If you book it for a year out you have little to lose except the 5 minutes it would take to book. Because this is being offered by multiple 3 party providers on multiple carriers it will be much harder to clean up than just silkair.com shutting down one origin city.

I definitely agree its a currency conversion issue. Believe me, I have been looking at ex-RGN fares for the past three weeks daily (on various sites) and on some days fare can be in excess of $1M return!

And believe me, I booked multiple tickets ex-RGN but due to a my card error wasn't able to ticket my tickets and the websites cancelled same. Think long haul F on QF, SQ, EK bookings for say $200 per sector!

I booked RGN-BKK-ICN-LAX F return, was under $500 all up. Don't know if I can actually travel on those dates for as I was planning to visit Bora Bora the same time (which I totally forgot about).

I'll sigh with you.
