Book the cook suggestions by departure city

I think we all agree BTC is better when it comes from SIN kitchen (except kyo-kaiseki but that's for another thread) but I find it difficult to get an idea of what dish I should consider when say, flying ex LHR or CDG. Of course, the decision to BTC in the first place is a personal choice so this thread shouldn't be about whether to do it or not.

If you had positive/memorable BTC orders departing from city other than SIN please share :)

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

About to try the chicken rice and the seafood thermidor ex-SYD. Will report back about those.

OK, stupid question, what is 'Book the Cook"?

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

It's an SQ program that lets J and F passengers to pre-order their main meals. More details here:
Book the cook

You can see there are dishes like lobster thermidor that's available from many cities but results seem to vary. I, for example, am unlikely to order Thai Curry if flying out of FRA unless someone tried it and recommends it. Kinda why this thread I guess.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

SQ won't let me have lobster thermodore from SIN-BKK

Thanks for this. I tried to search both 'Book the Cook' and 'TPR' on the SQ website and both came up blank. Hence I didn't bother about googling. SQ search engine must be weak. (or I am just bloody hopeless)

Thanks again...

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

I had this theory that the departure city 'should' have better meals cooked in the local fashion.

Alas, I had eggs on my face when I had to:

A) Returned the bisque because it was like drinking seawater (believe me, it was more like the concentrated effluent from a desalination plant)

B) Left half of the supposedly fantastic loué chicken because it was so sinewy, tough and .... tasteless.

Both were from Paris departures.

I blamed all of those hatted places for distorting my tastebuds.

I used to devour every single plate of foods..... in Y and now I'm whinging about BTC blandness.

On a positive note, I left the plates clean when I had Nasi Lemak departing SIN so my theory applies to SIN only !

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

MH have book the cook also

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

subscribing.

BTC chicken rice out of sydney was rather plain, but did enjoy the lamb shank curry also out of SYD.

should we have another thread for TPR food as well?

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

To be honest, the food is ok in TPR. It is the atmosphere, service and champagne that makes it special. Sometimes I long to be outside in the F or even J section to browse at the buffet!
Then again, I have ordered whatever there was at the F buffet while in TPR and they will bring it to you. Just like the CX F lounge in Hong Kong - they will bring the J wonton noodles across for you.

I can second the Lamb Shank Curry ex SYD.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

The nicest Chicken Tikka Kurchan Masala I've ever had departing Sin->Mel. Also the Wife was quite happy about Nasi Biryani. Lobster was so-so from Mel->Sin.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

I accidentally started another similar thread under general airline discussion and got referred here. I am certainly interested in menus with SQ, but what about TG's "Chef on Call"? Any suggestions? Lobster thermidor was recommended, but I don't want to have it all the time. There are many of us who used Lifemiles that booked F with TG recently (before they phase out F completely), so it would be great to hear what other's think about TG's version of Book the Cook.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Not sure if we want to combine multiple airlines in this thread as it may confuse some and most of the time people look for recommendation after airline has been decided. As pointed by Mushez MH also has Chef on Call with its own AFF thread too nonetheless so maybe set one up specifically for TG?

That's why I started the thread under "general airline discussion" to cover SQ/TG/MH.

TBH, preorder meal has nothing to do with the frequent flyer program (other than most of us uses points to get to pre-order the meal....), so it shouldn't really be under each respective frequent flyer programs.

this thread is for SQ book the cook. FWIW i vote to keep it as such.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

You could always suggest you don't like the cook and you would rather have the y meal

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

I realised suggestions of what to avoid can be as useful. I'm not talking about the so-so or if you're not quite impressed with the meal but still managed to eat some of it. I'm talking about really bad BTC that you want others to be spared from experiencing it. Who knows we end up with a list of kitchens that do bad Lobster Thermidor (oxymoron? :)). I'll start with my list:

DON'T
Kyo Kaiseki ex-SIN (they got the flavour profile all wrong, more like bland Chinese than the usual subtle flavour of Japan)

DO
Straits Chicken Curry ex-SIN
Bak Kut Teh ex-SIN (obviously)
