First class upgrade on QF1

I recently travelled on QF1 first class, which I paid for myself. It wasn't worth it. The cabin did seem tired. Several seats in the cabin were broken. My seat had no power so it was fully upright on the first leg and then flat on the second leg -- no in between. For the first leg, went to a vacant seat in business so I could have a reading light (I had to complain more than once before this was offered). On the second leg, I had to go somewhere else for meals because my seat was a bed (still no light).

Qantas seemed to think this was not really a problem, although they gave me some points eventually.

Hi and welcome to AFF!

Sorry to hear about your experience. You should have had a hefty points compensation from QF... in the region of 50k to 70k. This would represent the difference between a business class award and first class award, the former which is about what you got :(

Sorry. My earlier response was not helpful.

The pluses are a lot of space, privacy, a very nice bed, and no queues. Also, they will serve you dinner in the lounge (but who needs more food?). Otherwise, I can't see much difference from business.

If the bed/suite is broken then you are getting less than business, to be frank. Really hope you got some hefty points compo.
And welcome to AFF.

Hi @angella44 and welcome to AFF. My first F on a QF A380 had seat issues too. The crew had to reset the seat multiple times and for a few hours it just wouldn't budge. Now bear in mind this was March 2009 and the aircraft VH-OQB had been in service less than three months

Seat issues have plagued the A380 F cabin since inception so I'm hoping the mid-life cabin refresh will see an overhaul of the seat mechanics.

Do you like alcohol? Honestly, I think that's the most important question.

I can sleep in either J or F. The food is acceptable in either. The big difference is the alcohol.
75,000 points for alcohol? Must be some serious drinkers on AFF.

In my opinion the alcohol, sleep and food are not worth 75,000 points unless of course you have points coming out of your ears.

I have points coming out of my ears and I like alcohol. But not QF F alcohol. EK F alcohol on the other hand would certainly be worth one credit card sign-up.

I flew back on Qf 2 in F last week...75K pts upgrade from (work) paid J ---> F. The bed with thick padded mattress and doona was fantastic. With the help of 2 sleeping pills, I slept 8 hours solid as it was very comfortable. Went to sleep about 1.5 hours after take off, and awoke 2.5 hrs from Sin :) ....the food, service (had to use the call bell a couple of times for food service and making the bed, and that should NEVER be necessary in F, had to ask for amenity kit and PJs as FA " forgot"), alcohol (wine) were meh! :( ...the Sin lounge was horribly overcrowded altho. there was no Q for showers and I sat in the reserve area for F pax. The only other benefit was no Q for bathrooms despite a full F cabin. I wouldn't be parting with my own cash for Qf F when there are so many better (and cheaper) F products in the market a la Sq, Ek, Ey etc :)

I dread the day we have to go back to Business class lounge :(
Is it that bad? The BNE lounge is quite average but haven't been in the SYD business lounge for a long time.

You won't miss much domestically. I find some of the food better in the Qantas lounges as opposed to business lounges.

Now down to F2 A0 for the full journey. Lots of CLs and maybe P1s onboard. Not a surprise.

I would hardly have thought F5A5 nine or more days before departure would have given the OP any sort of hope at all. Those seats would fill with upgrades and staff in two seconds once the relevant window opens.

That's the comment I made weeks ago (acknowledged by the OP) but others had a different view.

Maybe the others were P1s who think F5 is looking pretty good :)
I suspect more likely folk who redeem F rewards outright.

Interestingly SIN-LHR is still showing F5 A5 but I wonder if that will change in a few hours?

Your comment earlier about staff - I know pilots and very senior execs have higher priority but I wouldn't have thought they'd process 7 days out, and wouldn't have thought they'd trump a points request from a paying pax either?

That's what it was for me when my upgrade came through at T-60 hrs (as plat)....,even after the upgrade, it remained F2 A0 suggesting the upgrade had been allocated some time before I was notified. As a side note, I have requested an upgrade to F on Qf2 6x in the last few years. It has come through 4x, 1x only Dxb-Syd (and only notified at the gate) and only 1x I had no success. Can't complain esp when the upgrade was only 60K pts but I really wish Qf have a better F product!

OP is NB. Hence my dampening of his expectations. Bonus if it succeeds.
