Fog in SYD

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Well that'll teach me to book a status run to get home when I actually need to get home at a certain time. Guess I'll be testing VA original routing credit process.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Not a good day for a QANTAS double SC run...........thanks for the 3.13am text to let me know QF8 from BNE to SYD wasn't coming to get me - hope they had a great time in NAN. Transfer over to a domestic QF503 flight - great had prepaid parking at international so thought go and take the transfer bus. Drop car off go to transfer bus - do you have a boarding pass NO - do have an itinerary - YES - here it is with my original flights (as Qantas has NONE of my bookings recorded - gremlin today?). Not willing to accept my word that QF8 isn't coming and I have to get to domestic - $5 (which I am going to ring and complain about parking costs are bad enough). Sat at the domestic for a while ---- delays - go up to counter not really happy with the times to transfer to international (that's why I was flying international/international!!) - so transferred me on to QF501. Arrived in SYD domestic and transferred to international without any problems. Now having a little relax before QF19 back to BNE. Very happy this is not my first status run otherwise I would give up and not do it again.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Diversions are already happening

QF12 to NAN
QF108 to OOL (?!)
QF94 going to AKL

MEL expecting some fog as well which isn't going to help. (although I think MEL is CAT III? Which mitigates this I suppose)

Be fun trying to put that lot back together.

The fact that Melbourne is CAT III doesn't help all that much in this sort of situation. To be able to actually fly the approach, you still need a diversion airport, that itself does not require a diversion. It does mean that if you get to fly the approach, you'll almost certainly land off it.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Launceston !!! Why you would divert a flight to LST at that time of night is just beyond me

You need an alternate that itself does not have fog, or a forecast of fog, that happens to be within range. From what I'm reading above, Launceston may have been one of a very limited pool of such options.

How did the A380 land in NAN, I didn't know NAN had the correct runway for 380's?

I think the very first diversion that the 380 did, shortly after they came into service, was to Nadi. Anyway, Noumea, Nadi, Auckland are quite usable.

It's happened at least a couple of times. QF conducted a medical diversion of an A380 into NAN very shortly after A380 ops started.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Looking at the forecasts last night... SYD required an alternate and BNE (storms), OOL (storms) MEL (low cloud), NTL (fog) and CBR (fog) were all unsuitable. ADL and LST, as odd as they sound, were probably the best options. The last flight to get in last night was QF557 at about 10:30. They went around off 34L and got in on 34R. Nothing made it after that. Interestingly, VA BNE-SYD did actually return to BNE so they must have had the fuel for the storm holding. In the case of the JQ BNE-SYD, had it actually departed on time they would have made it. Leaving over an hour late ended with them missing out.

It was a very interesting night, for sure! BNE-SYD JQ pax are landing now so, in the end, only 13 hours late which to be honest is pretty good.

QF108 to OOL (?!)

QF108 still on the ground in OOL and not due into SYD until 13:55 so must have been looking for a forward crew. I'm sure anyone on board all the way from NYC will not be sorry to see the back of that flight!

My interest in this flight is that VH-OJC is operating it and it is booked on my QF5 tomorrow so barring any late aircraft change she will be in position for the flight. Cannot imagine a 6 hour late arrival would force an aircraft change given the 24 hour turn around?

I think you'll be pretty safe, one way or another OJC will get down to SYD, and worst case scenario, they have other planes they could use.

I am sorry to hear that you are expecting to do the 5 on OJC, its not a great experience.

Interesting that QF website says it was diverted to BNE .... but who can believe information on websites these days  . Nonetheless , its been on the ground in OOL for over 5 hours ....Glad i'm not a passenger on that flight , especially from NYC ....i would be rightly P***ed off right now .

I expect the QF website doesn't associate OOL with QF108.....

Whilst I can understand that you would be p***ed off, I wonder what solutions you could offer.

Widespread weather diversions, as there appear to have been, cause chaos for many thousands. I don't see any quick and easy answers...though I've sometimes had to try to find that particular rabbit.

As QF108 left after QF12 , could they have not diverted to NAN also ( although having QF12 there might have been enough) or possibly AKL or NOU ?

OJC is in BNE and boarding soon.

That's a retrospective solution. The crew would have continually tried to go to the best alternative. They actually don't know how it's going to work out though, until after they've landed. You're actually starting at the point where they end.

The 108s destination is Sydney. Brisbane would be their first choice of alternate. Getting to Brisbane would be a better outcome than going anywhere else. Given that, as long as they had appropriate fuel to cover the Brisbane alternate, (which I think was storms, so most likely some level of holding), then pressing on would be a reasonable thing to do.

Noumea has very limited apron space, as does Nadi. Both have relatively limited services, and turning multiple aircraft around will be lengthy. If you run out of hours, which will become a real possibility, then there is no chance of replacement crew in any short time frame. Auckland is most likely not available unless you divert quite early (as I think the 380 did).

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Thanks jb . It's easy to play " armchair" QF operations and I'm sure there would have been a well planned logical reason for the diversion . I would love to stick my head into there operations centre to watch it tick over
