Fog in SYD

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Just gone 1am . Very dense fog around Alexandria not to far from the airport. I would estimate visibility on the roads to be down to a few hundred metres. There isn't a breath of wind to be felt , so I imagine it will hold quite well as the morning progresses . Could be a morning of mass diversions .

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Good luck for those with flights today... Hope things work out.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

QF12 and QF108 are here in BNE.

I'm due to fly on QF507 to SYD after a delay last night (I'm in a hotel thanks to QF). I was originally rebooked on QF503 but I see that has been cancelled.

I sense a fun morning ahead.

Just landed on 34L with no issues, might be different once the sun gets up.

The 2 morning VA flights from ADL are all delayed. 8:20 take off for mine, then 8:50 for the 6:30 flight. 9 am flight is still on time. Should have checked the status before leaving home, or getting out of bed even.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Yeah fog is not the problem yet , but traffic is a nightmare around the domestic

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Wow , I can't believe it can close in so quickly as I watch . I have just come out of the airport tunnel heading south and I'm struggling to see across to the International terminal

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Just watching over the bay , the southern end of 34L is still clear and still landing , but it's creeping over the bay quite quickly . I reckon there is about 15 mins max before its closed in

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Virgin Atlantic missed approach on 34L . Arrivals now switched to 16 L / R

Fog in Sydney again!!!!!

Just announced all Sydney flights after 6.00am from Melbourne suspended due to fog

see you in the lounge!!!

Re: Fog in Sydney again!!!!!

Clearing a bit now, crisis solved, now onto the next problem, the J lounge dishwasher is broken.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Pretty much all clear now . Probably going to be a bit busy over the next 2 hours playing catchup

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

So. I was booked on QF557 last night (BNE-SYD).

Missed that due to weather in BNE (my inbound flight from HVB was delayed by 90 minutes).

I was on QF507 this morning and arrived at the airport on time. I ended up using the Qantas Club as the Business lounge was standing room only.

QF501, QF505 and QF507 all ended up departing around the same time, and arrived within around 15 minutes of each other. So glad I was on QF507, as the earlier flights boarded and sat on the tarmac.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Does anyone know where I can find real-time weather related updates re flights in and out of SYD? I have a MEL-SYD tomorrow morning and let's just say, a delay may not necessarily be a bad thing...

Yep was on this flight (VS200). Got to about 800m and noticed that the flaps came back in and captain came on and said that fog was an issue. Circled around for a little bit and tried another runway, got to 200m and aborted (another one off my aviation bucket list ;)) - a few classic quotes from the flight deck "Fingers crossed", "about 1.5 hrs of fuel", & "lets hope the tower is telling us the truth". Question is - would it be normal to carry that much extra fuel normally?

The fog cam in early evening the night before, so it was on the forecast, with this in mind VS loaded more fuel to cater for the possibility they would need to divert allowing for a few missed approaches.

May be not so normal as such, but the A346 is well capable of carrying that extra load. 1.5 hours is also just about right for holding a little bit, having a go or two at landing, and then diverting to MEL or BNE. The crew definitely did their homework.

Have a look at post #120 by jb747. The alternate fuel is mandated by the forecast.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Might be some fog in SYD after all boys and girls. Forecast to lift early though...
