Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

16L may have better visibility than 16R being mostly over water?

Looking at the metar upthread that was indeed the case:

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Has not been in place for as long as I can remember, having seen quite a few heavy ops on 16L.

Was certainly the case when I left QF in 2011 - only approved for use during SODPROPS, otherwise an emergency runway.

Maybe they were all emergencies, certainly not a daily occurrence and the RVR differences this morning would justify actions I would have thought!

Out of interest what would be the cost of putting in a Cat3 system in Syd. I would also assume domestic aircraft would need to be updated, but most international would have the system in place.

For the number of days where it would be useful versus the cost the TCO makes it uneconomical apparently (Cat III has a 7000m critical area along the centreline), and it would require resumption of significant private land in the case of 16 which is an additional expense thats hardly insignificant.

Was there any fog in the west of Sydney?

That's where it originates from. Then the wind blows it eastwards, usually along the major water courses like the Parramatta and Georges River.

Its quite unusual for fog to form in the coastal suburbs.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Really? Three days of diversions must be upsetting some bean counters somewhere!

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Its got to be costing them a mint , especially QF

Cannot say I have ever seen it blow in from the east during my time in the Sydney and Bankstown towers (its been a northerly all night), while it forms rarely on the coast due to Anabatic/ Katabatic activity it's not rare, given the dew point and current temp it's local.

It doesnt look like its going to be as bad as the last few days . About 6-7 have diverted , mainly the early arrivals and the A380's . 16L is taking arrivals at the stage , while 16R is still not suitable for landings . Plenty still holding, I assume hoping that 16R opens up soon .

Something smaller sounding (not a Jumbo) just came in over Sydenham station so there are arrivals and I now get which 16L and 16R runways are!

Yeah, 16R has taken a few arrivals now , so they are all heading to line up . Not as bad as the last few days .

Sitting in 4A on 380 on Melbourne Tarmac QF 12 LAX SYD was diverted to MEL this morning bcause of frogs on runway (or was it fog?) then we had to wait on runway for 30mins because of all the extra aircraft from SYD had the gates.m Finally ended up at the freight terminal so we can refuel and go back to SYD.

We all have to stay on the aircraft but they decided to let the MEL bound passengers off.( by bus:)

It was suggested that they call the F lounge and have some nice Niel Perry eggs sent over but looks like that suggestion wasn't taken seriously.

Qanntas staff have cope very well and have been very helpful and useful! Congrats.

Hopefully we'll be able to get a new next flight from Sydney back up to Brisbane whenever we get there!

It didn't look anywhere near as bad this morning.

This is from my apartment just before 7am:

The previous two mornings you could barely see that building next door, let alone anything further out.

I guess there must have still been fog out towards the airport (~10km away). I face east (airport is west) so can't tell :)
