Perhaps we should keep the political discussion to the relevant thread

Many of these points have been addressed already in other threads.

Having said all that, I think if we look into the conditions of carriage there are few requirements for Qantas to compensate us. We have already had the example of a contractor missing 2 days work and hence pay. I missed half a day's work and hence inome. It is not a case of just missing work. There is no requirement for Qantas to compensate for that loss, although the CofC do refer to making a claim through the courts, or similar. Now I think this is a good way for Qantas to recognise those other losses that people have suffered as a result of this event. It doesn't replace all of my loss, or that of others, but it does generate some goodwill.

Now back on topic: Someone asked how people plan to use their flights. My thoughts so far:

  1. Take the 747 return to Perth
  2. Take a short CNS holiday, and catch up with people from school.
  3. fly to Auckland for lunch - bossreggie????
  4. Get to BNE to see family/mum before Christmas, or
  5. Use it for a routine work trip.
1, 2 and 3 are things that I wouldn't do right now, but would like to do. Hence this offer is useful in letting me consider something on a my wish list.

I like options 1, 2 and 3 :!:

Thanks Qantas, I was booked to travel on the Sunday and rebooked Tuesday. Ended up doing the Monday as a video conference which was quite succesful and actually contemplated not doing the Tue trip at all. Happy that it was concluded rapidly, will remain a loyal flyer.

... thinkng of Brisbane - Perth to catch up with old friends ~ thanks again.

Well I think Qantas should allow me to upgrade my heavily discounted return tickets to Tokyo in Dec Jan to compensate me for all the stress and trauma I suffered.

OK I was fine but I would love an any ticket upgrade offer about now please.

I think it's a nice gesture from Qantas and will be happy to take the ticket.

The flight that got cancelled for me was a business class flight, so it would have been nice to have been given a free flight of the same class that was originally booked, but beggars can't be choosers!

Red Roo, just a clarification, when you say Valid on point-to-point flights only, does this mean I can only book a flight if there is a direct single hop from my exit port. For example, if I wanted to fly from CBR-TSV and the only way up there was CBR-BNE-TSV, is that included. Or does point-to-point just mean I can't stop off on the way?

I like 1, because Perth is great :D
But also, last time I took the 747 PER to SYD, I'd bought the cheapest class of discount economy ticket, and still got seated in Premium Economy seats. Awesome!

Well this comes at a great time. I was hoping for some extra points but this is even better. :)

Was planning on a short trip away in late December (using one free Amex flight and one on QFF points) but classic award availability was a bit limited - this opens some options. :)

(Out of curiosity, will availability for these free seats be based on red-e-deal equivalent fares, or award availability?)

Great to see Red Roo actively involved in this thread too. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

My cousin is begging me to go to Perth. I was just planning to do a simple turn around, but family time, umm :?:

I can't understand why people think QF should be doing even more - gave people refunds, paid for accomodation and costs, helped paying for flights on alternative flights........and now free flights. I know the refunds will take time because of the sheer number and having to verify the claims but honestly, what else could they do? There will be many who won't fly the airline because of the lack of notice for the grounding, but most people were only delayed for about 2 days. I can understand the people who needed to be places for funerals, sick people etc but the rest of them were on holidays or work - being delayed for that long wasn't the end of the world. It is amazing how many people never think that things could go wrong - if the airline was grounded because of weather, would people be as upset?

Obviously you dont work in our business where we arrange workshops for around 20 people. In Australia and overseas. Sometimes people travel across Australia to attend them. It is not a matter of saying, meh, oh well, come back in a few days. The workshops get cancelled. End of story. For us, this means the loss of about $8000 in business dollars.

Weather - out of everyone's control. This wasn't. The Qantas brand has been damaged. Deliberately. And yes, as pointed out, our contract is with Qantas and it is their responsibility to manage the services provided by the Unions. At the time of the shut down, there were no reasons impeding the flights to be taken by our business on Sunday. Until the shut down.

Given that Q doesnt fly direct to NZ from Adelaide, does this mean this option is out for us?

Just out of curiosity?

You've covered weather above, but what about all the other causes of cancellations/disruptions?

Qantas IS responsible for compensating for any disruption (whether caused by union or company), but they're doing that - getting you to your destination, covering costs incurred by not getting you to your destination on time, and they do the same quite well when weather or mechanical issues interrupt travel.

And they do it much better than you would get from any US airline to boot.

In this instance they have recognized that they should do more - and they are.

In terms of business disruption - unfortunate fact of life. And it can be caused by a myriad of disruption-causes (of which QF's grounding is only one).

So one can be annoyed by what happened (I certainly am). But I feel QF is doing the right thing here.

After reading the terms and conditions, I think they are quite reasonable.

I am looking forward to see the "class availability" for the free flights though....

Hi Roos

If you were one of those Australian passengers whose flight was cancelled due to the grounding of the fleet, and you were due to travel between 5:00pm AEDT Saturday 29 October through 11:59pm AEDT Monday 31 October, we will be in touch soon with the primary contact on your booking to outline the details of how you can take up this offer.

Does the flight LHR-SYD (QF2) on Monday 31 Oct around 23:00 qualifies?
Given the uncertainty of the flight, i made alternative flight back to Syd on Sunday 30th Oct... but the flight eventually went ahead after the resumption of flights...

thanks

This wasn't covered in the FAQ.

Can someone tell me what "point to point" means?

Does it mean direct flights only?

i.e. If I wanted to go from PER to AKL there only option is to connect in MEL, SYD or BNE.

It means no connecting flights. So, you could not do PER-AKL.

Which is what I asked the page before - Adelaide also has no direct flights to NZ (and it was a NZ flight that was cancelled by Qantas) so we don't get that as an option either.

The difference with this particular situation is that the only reason the flights did not fly:lol: is that Qantas management refused to fly them. That scenario is completely different from any other event which might stop a flight.

yes they are trying to make good but right now, people just don't like Qantas.

Thanks for the clarification guys.

Seems that 20 SC each-way is the most I'm likely to get out of this free flight offer. Can anyone think of anything better?

I've been meaning to ask if there is a reason to not fly AirNZ ADL-AKL?

yeah looks like 20 is the limit.

I agree, that is a much better flight but the person had loyalty to Qantas. Silly person. :) Qantas fixed that up pretty quick now though. It is the third time his flights have been cancelled in three weeks. Some people take a while to learn.

The connections with AirNZ are way better but the plane they use is not exactly comfortable. Gone are the old days of AirNZ.

That would be my interpretation. It doesn't seem very fair to be in small towns and cities. For example if you are in Hobart then your choices would be Sydney or Melbourne. Some places would only have a choice of 1.

Although I guess you could pay for a flight to a city with more connections and then use the free fare from there. It doesn't seem very fair. Surely they would have to include the ability to connect.
