General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

Oh for goodness sake lovetravellingoz.the woman who had symptoms when she left her Sydney hotel was not tested despite telling authorities she had symptoms. She tested positive the next day.I can't prove she infected someone else and you can't prove she didn't as those details are not released.

You go on about testing but this was a case of a person in a higher risk group that wasn't tested and should have been
In other words a failure.
I am going now to agree to disagree with you and will not mention this again.

Even in that little bit of telly I do watch, I don't see the point in wasting eyeball time on viewing anything where you know, by the network or program history, what is going to be said, or what type of talking head guest is going to appear. I like to be informed, not talked at. Same with web sites.

I guess it depends the sort of work you do. Anyone in any of a dozen or more fields would find it important to know the people in their market. Whether you work in policy, law enforcement, advertising, media... knowing how different segments of the market think is really important.

For sure! 🙂 One of the advantages of being an indolent uni student. I can 'whatever' to anything that doesn't directly affect me

Surely this should be the textbook example of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted? The Govt. in the UK, from what I have read at least, seems to have made a complete hash of their response to this crisis. They may not have had as yet quite as bad a per capita result as Spain or Italy but they seem to stumble from one approach to another.

I'm not sure what their source is, but what I can tell you is this is fake news. I know several people working on the specific policy around what is reported..... and let's just say it doesn't quite match up but in any case I do still sit here scratching my head wondering why it's still not brought in yet.

Though which bit is fake?

That such a 14 day quarantine is not already in affect (which is the astounding part),

or

just that they are going for the cheap option of arriving people in the UK would have to self-isolate at a private residence.

or ?

That the airlines have been told it will be in place at the end of this month. That's fake news as a decision by DfT has not been made.

Well that makes it even worse  Just as well there are not many cases in the UK... oh' wait....... :(

What might be possible though is another government department will just make a decision and override the current discussion, however I believe this will be announced at 7pm tomorrow when Boris gives his speech. Note the wording is key here..... it will be noted as being the 'plan' which means it may happen or it may not essentially.

Yes my daughter has been complaining about the lack of quarantine for the last month. She considers the UK response as woeful and restrictions are being flouted with no penalty. However she has been told they will be working full shifts at her hospital from 1 June so at least she will stop going crazy from boredom.

she also said that numbers in England (as opposed to UK) are improving.

There seems to be a trend common with countries with "strong" male leaders which is their inability act early, well and decisively.

This all sounds sadly like an episode of Yes, Prime Minister

I was unsure why the leader needed a gender, seemed derogatory when I read it

Well I was not being complimentary!

I am not sure there has been a "strong" female leader in the way I meant "strong". ie Unwillingness to follow the advice of their medical advisers is a common trait of the "strong" male leader brigade.

There have been many good male leaders in the Covid 19 crisis including ScoMo who has stepped up and exceeded my expectations, as well as Kyriakos Mitsotakis etc.

Unwillingness to follow the advice of their medical advisers ...

...is not necessarily a bad thing? Look at the schools closure, swimming pools being closed, etc. Sometimes the medical advice might be on point, but when it makes no sense to the ordinary person, insisting on certain things like schools being open just adds to public unease. That's not a good thing. I'm sure the Swedish medical advice was to carry on... and look where that got them :(
