Oh goody. Another auto immune illness I can develop.

My thoughts are that autoimmune illness can be triggered by genetics (family tendancy); major stress event, or major viral illness. I know I can tick off the first two causing two different illnesses, and my niece developed lupus as a result of the first (tendancy, eg from her father (my sibling) via our mother,) and then viral pneumonia as a teenager where she was very ill in hospital. So Covid is very likely to trigger something. Its just early days of tracking consequences yet.
 
Nephew in law who works in France but escaped to Adelaide to return to his young family in late March has been called to return to France next week. They need to pay a hefty mortgage and so cant just quit. They have two young kids. Usually they travel to see each other every three months. This time - he leaves next Monday currently, he will say goodbye and not know when they will see him again. He wont get enough leave to cover the two weeks quarantine to visit Australia.

A bit off topic, so I'll keep it brief.

Thomas Borody has never won a nobel prize. He developed triple H.Pylori therapy.
The prize was won by Barry Marshall and Robin Warren for the discovery of H.Pylori - prior to that gastic ulcers were thought to be secondary to worry and gastric hypersecretion.

I read your article (an interesting read) from the Daily telegraph, hosted on a commercial website promoting its founder (Prof Borody) who specialises in faecal transplants (there are recognised indications for this).

The initial evidence for invermectin on preprint was from registry studies from the surgisphere registry. The same one that was used in the discredited and retracted Lancet and NEJM articles on hydroxychloroquine. A couple of articles in sciencemag and thescientist discuss this. This paper has now been withdrawn.

Following studies, the latest being from Florida. "ICON (Ivermectin in COvid Nineteen) study: Use of Ivermectin is Associated with Lower Mortality in Hospitalized Patients with COVID19" by Cepelowicz Rajter. Again a retrospective cohort study, but it showed an association with a lower mortality. They concluded with "These findings should be further evaluated with randomized controlled trials." So the evidence is in the fledgling stage and needs further investigation, like hundreds of other drugs.

"Dr Borody says he (Pres. Trump) may absorb enough through his skin to protect him, despite people around him at the White House becoming ill." - I would suggest Prof Borody should stick to gastroenterology, as he knows very little about pharmacokinetics. Ivermectin is poorly absorbed though skin, and is very, very unlikely to get to therapeutic levels.

No he's not. The Nobel for helicobacter went to Barry Marshall and Robin Warren from WA. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2005.

It's interesting how many gastroenterologists seem to be experts in many fields. Remember Andrew Waklefield who was discredited and completely banned from medicine by the GMC for fraud in the UK then went to the US to start a highly paid position at one of their loony "institutes" that still promotes the diswcredited MMR theories.

I have very bad memories of a gastroenterologist who almost killed Mr FM :(. He was also a general physician and treated him in emergency, didn’t get him assessed by anyone else, diagnosed brain cancer and discharged him for some R&R. Fortunately we got him over to another hospital where he was assessed by neurologists who them performed life saving therapy for his brain abscesses before they burst and killed him.....

Wow. Thanks for that info. Its hard to determine any causal effect from Covid. She sure had a full on autoimmune response. Will be interesting to see if those tests continue to be so strongly indicative. Lupus anticoagulant being the functional test so possibly the other APS markers being low might suggest it might be transitory. It wasnt with me but can be.

Sounds very much like my profile. Maybe I had covid three years ago? 😱😁 I'd be fascinated to see if they have done an ANA for these people.
 
I have found it very interesting to see the number of small home-based businesses starting a roaring trade in masks lately. I am part of several rural-buying pages on Facebook, and it's wild how many people are making masks and selling online. Fabric shops are selling out of elastic and supplies.

I think it's great that people are finding another way to make an income, but some things have certainly concerned me. In particular I saw crochet/knitted ear savers advertised the other day. They take the strain off your ears when wearing masks, which is great, but my concern is that these can't be sanitised.

That said... #shamelessplug ... my brother and sister-in-law are making some fantastic 3d printed ear savers.See here as well as face shields used by a variety of medical and health professionals.

As a crocheter myself I have steered clear of anything COVID related due to concern about litigious Karens and the like, as well as a general dislike for dealing with the general public.
