General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

For a democracy to function properly there needs to be viable choices.

I feel that currently there is not a viable or competent alternative.

The daily irrational and inconsistent squealing from the current opposition leader disuades me from looking around and gives me no confidence at all.

It would be great to go to the next election (any election) with real choices
That certainly was the issue in SA. The opposition just couldn't land a punch.

Any credibility the opposition leader will have gone out the window with anyone with a memory as the figures go down day by day. He has been yelling in a sarcastic tone at the camera not to have stage 4 Lockdown, open everything up, remove all restrictions on business for months. There is no statesmanship. No logic. No considered statements. No constructive recommendations.

Even today, gov is going to hand out $300m to small independant F&B businesses to help them to restart. Instead of saying good move finally some support to business but not near enough, our plan would have been or is - we just ended up with a mouthful of angry irrational negativity.

I'm actually embarrassed on his behalf

But that is what all opposition leaders do. Take the opposite path when an announcement is made. It really is funny and their heart must just not be in it.

I've been hanging out for the next step so we can visit my mum in regional Vic. I havent seen her since June. She told me yesterday that they have people coming to visit this weekend; I've had to break it to her that they only get one household bubble and that means we can't visit now until the last step (no cases for 14 days), whenever that might be.

Oh my, even if they dont see another "external" household for 14 days apart you still can't visit each other? I cant see the medical evidence for that being necessary.

Yep the rules are one household forms your bubble for step three. Maximum five people total.

Well the good news is that you will be able to see her once Metro Melbourne enters the Third Step, just not in her home if she has already "bubbled" with another household. You can however meet with her outside of her property: in any public space or at a cafe/restaurant etc.

Third Step
Leave home: no restrictions on reasons to leave home or distance but stay safe

Public gatherings: increased to up to 10 people outdoors (infants under 12 months of age are not included in the cap)

Hospitality: limited indoor and predominantly outdoor seated service, group limit of 10 and density limits, and indoor cap 20 patrons and outdoor cap 50 patrons per venue

Intrastate travel: allowed across Third Step area

Entertainment: outdoor venues and spaces open with density quotients, patron caps and COVIDSafe Plans which must be published online for large spaces.

Accommodation: open, with caps per the household bubble.
= So you can stay overnight, but just not at you mums., as she has "bubbled" without you.

She lives three hours away, I’m not travelling that far with a toddler to hang out in a park. The plan was to go and stay with her.

Hell no. But even being able to do that is still 3 weeks away? Maybe Vic will whizz to the next stage very quickly. They are extremely onerous restrictions now that infection rates are much lower.

I appreciate that there are still deaths for those in Aged care but in general how are the hospital and acute care rates moving? Remember the goal was flatten the curve but no State seems to have remembered anything like that.

So many things have been cancelled in SA especially by Councils. They have been itching to get rid of Christmas Carols for a few years now and now they are salivating at the prospect of cancelling everything. We have Lobethal fireworks display where people drive past all the lit houses in cars! Yet even that has been cancelled. Makes no sense. There are no restrictions in holding this but of course it's the new Covid Excuse. We haven't had community spread since March and the only positives have come from known travellers.

In Victoria, I think a lot will depend on the success of the lockdown. If his strategy works and the economy opens up without another spike in cases, his popularity will probably rebound. I think he's doing what be believes is necessary rather than what will give him a boost in the polls.

Isn't it a bit like Churchill in WWII (though in no way would other way would I put Dan on the same page as Winston)? Basically he was a popular leader whilst the war raged, but he was voted out as soon as it ended.

Eventually Dan will have to pay for the fact that he (or his minions) are responsible for the war. My guess is that his own party will decide he needs to spend more time with his family.

Trump appears to have lost his orange complexion. Weirdly he looks normal again yet obviously unwell.

He looked really pale, but I wasn’t sure how much of that was unwell and how much not the normal make up for television. He’s certainly getting every possible treatment. Remdesvir was an obvious one but the antibody treatment is interesting,

Maybe his makeup artist and hair stylist are not allowed into the hospital room? Didn't Boltons book say something about those two being the first people he normally saw each day?
