General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

I didn’t find it confusing. He was quite clear that they were trying to avoid big gatherings (out and in houses) and ad long as people were sensible at how much they went out and shops controlled the number of people in the shops it was an acceptable compromise.

if we all work together on this and don’t flout guidelines then maybe they can keep control and people don’t lose their businesses. If not then stricter lockdown will come in.

keeping the shops open doesn’t mean going shopping all day, or meeting your friends for a shopping trip. It means staying home as much as possible but still being able to go and buy something if you needed it.

If experience in London is anything to go by, after pleading and pleading people continued to ignore, so then the lockdown came. Australia will not be far behind IMHO, although I believe some states still have schools open......?

And there is the weak point in that argument. If only we could rely on people to take responsibility. Without clear prescriptive enforceable movement restrictions people are proving themselves not able to take responsibility to protect the commons, if that is our aim. Dribbling out a bit of a rule every day is confusing.

At the end of the day it's YOUR responsibility

Handling banknotes and petrol pump handles are high risk activities. Banknotes are plastic so the virus can survive for some time.
We used to make plastic garden stakes out of ground up banknotes for the green industry. The raw material was coming from withdrawn banknotes so they are polypropylene based.

Yesterday we heard that a person who travelled back from New York was now in ICU at Royal Perth. His home is in a 15 floor apartment building next door to where my son is living. Apartment buildings are not too different to passenger ships is what I am thinking With air conditioning in the common areas.

1/2 hour only at the hairdresser - now do I grow my hair long or go gray can’t colour it and cut it in half an hour :) :)

The boss had her cut, colour yesterday, afterwards I said maybe it's time to let nature take it's course. She said that was talked about in the salon, long grey hair the next fashion trend?

I see no weak point. All state and territories are implementing something sensible.

Society needs to function for the many, not just the ignorant. Like was said last night, every job is essential.

If the time comes for a total lockdown, then that’s what will happen.

When that happens I believe every worker placed in lockdown should need to apply for the dole .... including all public service not actually working. Equality at its best.

I also believe the workers on the frontline - Health, ES, teachers, cleaners, etc should get danger money, pretty much like defence personnel get when they are deployed on our behalf.

Greta Thunberg is undergoing testing and has asked everyone to take it very seriously. Maybe this is what we needed to happen?

I wouldn't worry too much about it. China has got it pretty much under control and they seem to all live in apartment buildings in the cities.

Seems to be slightly contradicting. You can have small parties .... but you can't gather around a table with family. Just bring in the no party bigger than 2 restriction like the UK has and be done with it! No parties, at all. Idiots.
I'd suggest five is a max and no 'strangers'.

Yeah but they have citizen compliance. Whether by force or choice, people still stayed indoors and away from each other whereas we have people complaining because they want to have a bbq or brunch

Geeze. Does it really matter about whether it's 2 this or 10 that? The message is the same. Use common sense and maintain recommended social distancing measures and personal hygiene. Governments and Prime Ministers are not infallible but I'm sure the PM and all the literally hundreds of public servants and numerous experts advising him, all are acting in good faith to the best of their abilities for the common good and welfare of all Australians (and our guests). Of course there will always be those that just dont understand how government works or are just ignorant or just blinded by their political biases. At the end of the day it's YOUR responsibility to protect yourself and your loved ones regardless of what the government does. Might add Having to work with state governments on anything requiring consensus is a nightmare at the best of times let alone a national emergency.
Herding cats comes to mind.

Not disagreeing, my comment was simply that apartment buildings aren't dangerous in their own right.

That might of been the intent, but he‘s used the word essential twice inappropriately. To say you can only leave to buy essentials and then include all retail, that is not essential. He also used it to apply to all workers.

What happens now when (not if) we have to go to a UK/NZ style lockdown and we really do have to limit shopping to food/medicine and workers to actual essential workers? He’s really made a mess of it. I’m a voter from his side of politics, I defended him during the bushfires but I think he’s wrong now.

What is your angle here? Do you think the policy is confusing to most people and they won't get the message, spreading the virus? Or you think that because the message might appear inconsistent, that the danger is not as bad as officials make out?

I'm saying the messaging is confusing (and I'm not the only one saying this). The danger he that he's used words very similar to Boris Johnson (going shopping for essential food/medicine or going to work for essential workers) but he's redefined these terms to refer to all goods & services not specifically excluded, and all workers. The problem for this is when our case numbers continue to increase to UK levels, which they will (and have been), when it comes time to actually keep people home, it's going to be more and more difficult to get that message across.

Edit - Victorian Premier was crystal clear - "Don't go out to buy a pair of shoes - it's not worth a life".

Certainly the more this message is repeated by those in leadership roles, the better chance people will start to listen.

I have witnessed quite a few people not taking responsibility. Bondi Beach is just a high profile example. That people will take responsibility for themselves is a weak point. Those of us who are more responsible will be taking responsibility for ourselves. The government will step in for those people who don’t seem to be able to take responsibility for themselves and will police it.

Look you are not wrong about leaders giving confusing messages, however what we had to put up with on Sunday and Monday with confusing messaging in the ACT, Morrison seemed clear by comparison.

I don’t usually listen to pollies speeches as I dislike them all, but I did listen to Morrison last night and found him direct and reassuring. He is treading a fine line and maybe we will have to have a total lockdown but having a tradie son-in-law I can see just how much stress is being caused. Obviously no economic concerns are worth a life but I can also see how he is trying to balance at the moment and try and save families from going onto Centrelink.

if people would do the right thing it would all work but people are just flouting things like isolating when coming back from overseas or going shopping after they test positive.

Talking of London Dr FM’s flat mate asked if a friend of his could isolate with them :). The friend is coming back from Thailand and doesn’t want to isolate with his parents .......

The one downer of this post merge is that you Agree on the first post but then  on the merged post. She did say no didn't she ......

FWIW - I thought our Australian PM spoke very clearly and very well - no confusion for me.

This morning we listened to our Victorian Premier speak for night on an hour and he spoke exceptionally well - no confusion there either.
