General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

Seeking thoughts of AFF'ers regarding the flu vaccination which has recently become available. With all the social distancing & other precautions will the normal flu season likely be pushed back until later in the year? If so would you hold off getting the flu vaccination for a month or two?

Absolutely not - get it as soon as you can. It will prevent you mistaking symptoms for COVID and potentially spreading flu to someone who might end up using precious health resources. All health advice I'm aware of at the moment is they want maximum uptake of flu vax this year.

Let's be clear - social distancing reduces spread, it does not eliminate it. You may still catch COVID-19 even if you apply all the social distancing rules. You can still catch flu.

Maybe we were listening to different Press Conferences - shopping centres are still open - food courts in shopping centres closed for sit down - vendors can still sell take away - I thought that was pretty clear.
The confusion apparently, is that some of the states are making their own rules. Morrison can not speak to each state's laws and he isn't, he can only state what the Federal ruling is. If the other Premiers want to do their own laws then those only apply to THAT state. I don't care what the Vic Premier says. I'm quite happy to follow Morrison's advice and then check with our State Premier who seems to have a good handle on things too.

That is what the PM said. I don't think you listened to the Victorian Premier conference properly. He specifically said only shop for essentials and someone asked for example if you could go shopping for shoes and he specifically said no.

However, even within the PM speech, he said all shops were open but also said only leave to shop for essentials. Their definition of essential is obviously different.

The intent should be only leave home if you absolutely have to. I don't think the PM is getting that message through.

And another disturbing trend I'm seeing is this delight in having a negative COVID-19. It just means you're negative when tested, you can still catch it, which means you can still transmit it - these people still need to be equally vigilant.

You may even have picked it up but not enough viral load to be positive. So should have the test for respiratory viruses done as well and if one of them comes back positive much less likely to be Covid.

Was driving yesteday and drove past a driving instructor and student with L plates up and windows closed

That is absolutely nuts

Much better than a positive!

I've been saying that, to myself coz there's no one else here :p for ages. It's a point in time. Tomorrow will be different.

But only for a minute is that negative relevant.

"Woolworths to limit trading hours at certain stores to fulfil online orders
By Dominic Powell
Woolworths will further limit the trading hours of 41 stores across the country in order to ramp up the online delivery of groceries to vulnerable customers.
The stores won’t open until 11am and will shut at 6pm to allow workers to fulfil online orders, with a priority of getting food to the elderly, people with disability, those with compromised immunity and people in mandatory isolation".

This morning I was asked if I wanted to go to a friend's house on Friday night because she normally goes to the pub so just having 6 people over for drinks and dinner (one couple I've never met) - - err no thanks

So that means the 1hR 7am for the elderly is over?

Some more of the people not taking responsibility for themselves or others.

PM will give another update shortly. News24 an ABC station usually has these live.
Just watched it. My stress levels went down about 1000%. I really like the idea of the national commission to organise things - some heavy hitters on that and very non partisan with Greg Combet on it. Jane Halton had a good rep.

Compare what Australia is doing to Trump hoping that churches will be packed at Easter!

does anyone know how effective washing hands with water is

Ive become paranoid and when I get home from anywhere, washing hands with handwash,

People like that make be so angry. As I posted elsewhere, tone deafness is as (probably more so) rampant as Covid-19.

WA just announced they are providing self-contained hotel/serviced apartments for health workers who don't want to go home and risk their families. A great relief for those workers going home at night from hospitals etc and not knowing if they are risking their families/parents et al.

Washing hands with soap and water is the absolute best. At least 20 seconds and if you haven’t already, watch a video on how to wash your hands - different to what I have ever done.

we wash our hands well every time we come in, even if we have only been walking the dogs.

I don’t see the point of every few hours but definitely before preparing or eating food.

Agree - Mr FM cancelled his photo shoots weeks ago. It was only 1 model coming to the house but really you need to cut down anything that is not essential to jobs, His is a hobby, the models pose for free and he gives them the photos for free. It can all start again when this is over.

Great news apart from possibly being a danger to their families at home, the health workers are going to become increasingly tired from long shifts and the continual stress of the unfolding situation.

Having a nice, quiet bed near to their hospital will cut travelling time on the roads and be a godsend.

Your opinion no doubt? May or may not be factual - but waste of time debating either way
You asked how the two conferences were different. I gave you a specific example.

For the record the federal Labor party has now agreed the PMs messaging is inconsistent with the states. I don’t know how you can objectively say it isn’t.
